Whitestone School
was first opened as a primary school for boys in 1942. It closed in 1976 but was reopened in 1982, this time as a co-ed primary school.
Throughout its history, the positive and vibrant spirit of the school has lived on, maybe more so now than ever and because of this it has been decided that we need to celebrate the 65/25 Anniversary in style.
Besides holding Anniversary celebration events, we would very much like to hear from as many Old Whitestonians as possible. We want to find out about interesting events that may have occurred during your time at the school, we want to compile lists of your names and contact details, dates you were at the school and where and what you are doing now.

"Christmas Crackers" takes place at the Sibson Hall on Saturday 2 December starting at 7.30. It's a Christmas entertainment combining words and music and involving the Bulawayo Philharmonic Chorus, members of the Bulawayo Philharmonic Orchestra, the choirs of Girls' College and C.B.C., dancers from Desray's Dance Academy, Margot Morgan, Shirley Smith, Sandy Jina, Deon Marcus, Brian Meikle, Ruth van Rheede, Peter Rollason, Hazel Vorster and more. ... perhaps even a guest appearance from Father Christmas!
Booking is already open at Meikles and tickets are $1000.00. This is a subscription concert so members of PAB/BPO simply show their card at Meikles to book their seats. (If you've mislaid your card, then please give your name to Margaret at the booking office who will reserve seats for you.) And, of course, Red Carpet seats will be reserved as usual.
BOOKS AND RECORDS
Books and LPs left over from the Academy Morning Market are currently on sale in the Academy foyer at VERY modest prices. Come and have a browse when you're passing - they will be there until the end of term.
MORE CONCERTS
On Wednesday, 29 November at 5.30, there will be a show from LIYANA, originally known as the KGVI Band. Their music is Afro-fusion, blending traditional and more conventional instruments. The band members specialise in marimbas, drums, shakers, keyboard and piano and the songs they play are also of mixed origin, being both local and international. In April this year the band entered and won the Music Crossroads inter-regional festival in Mozambique, and it has recently returned from a tour of Sweden, Netherlands and Belgium where I'm told they had people up and dancing at their 30 or more shows! More details of the band and its achievements can be found in the attachment to this newsletter. Tickets are on sale at KGVI for $1000.00 and will be available at the door - and, although space is limited, dancing is permitted!!
HOLIDAY COURSES
The Academy will be running holiday courses in the week 11-15 December and these will include digital photography, creative writing, flower-arranging and chess. These are mainly aimed at those of school age but adults are more than welcome! There will also be a Jazz Workshop in the same week. Full details of these courses are available from the Academy.

BULAWAYO FLORAL GROUP -
Our next meeting (and the final meeting of the year) will take place on Wednesday 6 December 2006 at 2.30pm in the Church of Ascension Hall.
We are very pleased to round of the year with Heather Sinclair as our guest demonstrator.
There will be no competition exhibits this month, but anybody who would like to bring an arrangement is encouraged to do something dry in a 'non-returnable' container which can be donated to one of the Homes for the Elderly.
Entrance fee is $50. Would members/visitors please bring a plate of eats to be enjoyed with tea & coffee which will be served as usual.

Your latest edition of Morning Mirror....mentions two names that are very familiar to me and mean so much to my personal history: Gerry and Cheryl Oostuizen. Let me tell you the story. Many years ago Gerry hired me to play at a function held at his home in Bulawayo...I think it was his daughter's birthday party...21st. It was a great party and I met so many lovely people. In those days I used to play two little keyboards, one above the other....looking back, they were more like toys that instruments. I had fun with them and although I am not much of a musician, enjoyed the singing more and can read music. About two weeks after the party, Gerry called me to say that he had bought himself a keyboard...would I come around and show him how to use it. I went over and boy! what a keyboard....a 'rolls Royce's compared with what I was using. To cut a very long story short.....they ended up GIVING me the keyboard.
This extremely generous gesture was the reason I continued with my music/singing. About five years later I was playing for the old folks at a home in Harare. There was a man there, with a younger lady...they seemed very familiar to me, but I couldn't place them. At the end of the session, this lady came over and I was thrilled to discover it was Cheryl's sister....and father. It was so heart warming to know that the keyboard Gerry gave was again being used to entertain members of their family once. I wonder if Gerry and Cheryl realise just how much they changed my life the day they gave me the keyboard. They are very special people.

I THOUGHT MAYBE YOU WOULD CONSIDER PERPETUATING THE COLUMN WITH OTHER FOCAL POINTS OF INTEREST LIKE THE BON JOURNEE DURING THE DAYS OF THE STOVIES AND ELECTRIC COLOURED SOCKS, WHERE WE PLAYED THE JUKE BOXES, WHEN WE GATHERED TO SEE THE LATEST ELVIS OR CLIFF RICHARD MOVIE.
HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE JUST TO SAY HOW SAD IT IS TO DRIVE PAST MILTON SCHOOL TODAY AND SEE THE STATE OF THE ONCE FINE RUGBY AND CRICKET FIELDS. I WAS AT MILTON IN THE FIFTIES WHEN POP DOWNING WAS HEADMASTER AND PUTT JACKSON WAS HIS DEPUTY. WHAT A FINE SCHOOL IT WAS WITH SO MUCH TRADITION. EACH MORNING THE HEAD WOULD ATTEND ASSEMBLY IN HIS VARSITY GOWN FOLLOWED BY THE HEAD BOY WHO CARRIED AND READ FROM THIS HUGE BIBLE. MR QUIRK OFTEN PLAYED HIS VIOLIN DURING THE SINGING OF THE HYMNS. THE SCHOOL HYMN WAS 'HE WHO WOULD VALIANT BE, FOLLOW THE MASTER" ETC ETC AND WE ALL STOOD AT ATTENTION WHEN WE SANG IT. IT WAS SO EXCITING TO REPRESENT THE SCHOOL AT VARIOUS SPORTS AND MOST FRIDAYS WE WERE ON THE STATION IN BLAZERS, SCARVES AND STRAW BOATER'S ON OUR WAY TO PLAY CHAPLIN OR GUINEA FOWL IN GWELO OR PRINCE EDWARD OR CHURCHILL IN SALISBURY - WE EVEN TRAVELLED BY TRAIN TO PLUMTREE.
SOME OF THE MOST RENOWNED MASTERS WERE "GUF GUF" GIFFORD (GIFFORD TECH WAS LATER NAMED AFTER HIM), SAMMY SPIERS THE SCIENCE MASTER, "BOK" JONES WHO TAUGHT HISTORY, AND OUR P.T. AND SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR WAS MR WATT (A RHODESIAN DIVER) WHO DIED ONLY LAST YEAR IN HIS LATE NINETIES. THE LATIN TEACHER WAS MR HAMBLY.
OUR SISTER SCHOOL WAS TOWNSHEND WHICH WAS A RELATIVELY NEW SCHOOL, AND WE REALLY LOOKED FORWARD TO DANCES IN THE DINING HALL WHEN THE GIRLS WERE BUSSED OVER FROM TOWNSHEND.
WE PRODUCED SO MANY NATIONAL CRICKET AND RUGBY PLAYERS AND GREAT SPORTSMEN IN OTHER DISCIPLINES, BUT HOW SAD THAT TODAY GIVEN THE TOTAL DETERIORATION OF THE FACILITIES THAT THIS IS UNLIKELY TO BE EVER REPEATED. ONE ONLY HAS TO LOOK AT THE RUGBY FIELD, SQUASH COURT IN TATTERS AND THE COW PATCH THAT WAS ONCE A FINE CRICKET PITCH TO REALISE NO NATIONAL PLAYERS WILL BE NURTURED HERE.

'Jambanja' a book by Eric Harrison, will be launched in the next two weeks. Eric has very kindly offered 15% of book sales to 'SOAP' (Save our aged people).

This is a very personal story about a family who loose their farm in the Lowveld of Zimbabwe. It is humorous, courageous and tragic. Although many people have been affected in a similar way, the book is written from the heart and is a 'must read'.

As a young lad (not that I am old now) growing up in Kariba, I used to know a man by the name of Peter Harper. He outlived his wife Molly Harper by a number years.
I used to run up to the country club in Kariba every Sunday morning for years and get the Sunday paper for him and go deliver it to his house in exchange most of the time for a chocolate. I used to thoroughly enjoy serving the old man (he must have been in his 60's - 70's then) in this way and for some or other reason I have not been able to stop thinking of the old man recently, probably for the last six months or so. I am on a mission to try and find out what has happened to Peter Harper and if he is still amongst us.
Should Peter not be with us any more, it will be very sad. I am looking for closure on my thoughts and if God has spared the old man I would really like to make contact with him again. (He was in Kariba through most of the 80's)

I am looking for a small portable fan forced oven. They are no longer in production, but were made up until several years ago.

They are about the same size of an electric frypan. They are known by several names, thermo cooker, air forced grill, amongst others. But all of them work on the same principal. An electric oven that is fan forced.
