We have contacted Ministry of Labour twice now and on both
occasions 
they have denied any wage increase, insisting that it is "merely a 
rumour".

Thembelihle is a "Halfway House" for patients with complications of 
AIDS who, although ill, do not need (and cannot afford) admission
to 
expensive hospitals for treatment, yet are too sick for care at 
home.  They may have ulcers and skin diseases, diarrhoea and 
dehydration, severe nerve pains and poor nutrition.  Their families 
may live in small crowded houses and are already burdened with 
chronic shortages of food and fuel, constantly rising costs of all 
necessities and may lack the skills to treat their ill 
relatives.                                 This is where
Thembelihle 
can help
It is a nursing home in Mpopoma which provides appropriate nursing 
care, good nutrition and support by skilled staff in a peaceful 
environment at minimal cost. Relatives are also counselled and
shown 
in a practical way how to look after the patient when well enough
to 
go home.  It is a non-Government organisation (NGO) which does not 
receive regular financial support from Government sources, nor from 
the Global HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB fund.  We have received much help 
from Rotary, Churches, Tudor Trust, MAC and NAC and other 
organisations and individuals but now these sources are drying up
and 
Thembelihle is faced with a crisis.  We need ongoing funding for 
staff and every day expenses - about US$15 000 per month. Can any
of 
your readers suggest potential donors whom we could contact?  If so

LA GONDOLA RESTAURANT !!

According to Heehoo La Gondola Restaurant, in 1974, was the only 
restaurant in Zimbabwe where you could get a four course meal after
2 
a.m. in the morning. One could arrive unannounced with a large
group 
of revellers at the most unearthly hours, order a magnificent meal, 
dance to the excellent discotheque that never closed, until all
hours.

It was a Bulawayo icon that attracted enormous jealousy from the 
Harare jet set who never had anything that came close to competing! 
And there was never a cover charge! The Steak 44 as will many of
the 
other Gondies dishes, will go down in history I gather.

Tony Di Prinzio was always the most perfect Mein Host in the world. 
Most of Zimbabwe's major business deals were clinched in the early 
hours around the famous Gondies Bar, as were most of Bulawayo's
more 
notorious divorces celebrated.

Now I am not averse to La Gondola Restaurant being taken over by a 
Chinese Restaurant, in fact I love Chinese food and so does Hehoo, 
but we are extremely sad to say goodbye to La Gondola.

Tish Di prinzio has done a fabulous job trying to keep it all going 
after Tonys death, but we must say farewell, say God Speed, say we 
will miss you, to Tish and Tony and Bulawayo's legendary La Gondola 
Restaurant in Grey Street.

However Gondies bar is still operational and in full swing I
believe !!

THROUGH THE TURN STILE FOR OUR WEEKLY SWIMMING DOUBLE PERIOD. MR 
BRIDGES WAS THE SUPERINTENDENT. I WENT ON TO JOIN THE PIRATES 
SWIMMING CLUB UNDER THE CARE OF MISS JUDY DIAMOND WHO I THINK LATER 
MARRIED RONNIE HILL THE RHODESIAN RUGBY HOOKER. ONCE A YEAR WE
WOULD 
DRESS UP AS PIRATES AND PARADE THROUGH BULAWAYO TO RAISE FUNDS FOR

NEWS ON DOMESTIC WAGES IS THAT THEY HAVE NOT CHANGED !!

But some other news - the policemen riding bicycles round town are 
authorised to stop vehicles they decide have crossed amber lights - 
no spot fine - court the next day!!   Quote - "Because there are so 
many accidents at traffic lights"!

Thanks for the great article on Borrow St baths,many a happy
carefree 
schoolday were spent there,and even later in the late sixties,early 
seventies I well remember one stage of my life when I "was between 
jobs"!,Ian Armstrong and myself used to spend the whole morning and 
lunchtime there. The mornings were often arriving there direct from 
an all night session at the La Gondola and were used as a 'sleep 
time'.(The man in charge then's name slips me now,he was just
before 
Mr Meal,a big strong man,whose  son and daughter were both good 
swimmers). They used to 'kick out at about 8am but if you were good 
and hid away nicely down behind the filtration plant room he would 
let you 'sleep it off' 'til they re opened at 9am? By the time the 
lunchtime session finished a and we were back to 'full-steam' it
was 
back to "la Gondies" for a short lunchtime session before deciding 
which film to watch that afternoon?(decisions decisions
decisions!). 
When I was a "Younger Boy" I used to go on holiday to Livingstone 
where I stayed with a lady Mrs Constance Law. Whilst there one day 
she showed me some pictures of old Bulawayo and amongst them were 
early pictures of Borrow St Baths. Her late husband had been
involved 
in the building of them. It was amazing to see them,especially the 
one taken from just inside the turnstiles looking down over the 
length of the pool. Obviously the pool was more or less the same
but 
what was incredible was that all the trees that now towered over 
everything were only about a foot or so high!,all those lovely pine 
trees which one had assumed were always there and 'that 'high. 
Unfortunately I never thought of asking her for a copy and wonder
