On Monday morning 23rd Oct, at 9 am, my mother-in-law
(74 yrs of age) was robbed at her home in Hillcrest.
She came across two black men in her kitchen. She was
tied up and pushed into her sewing room. They then
proceeded to ransack the house at their leisure. They
turned the house upside down (like you see in the
movies). We are so happy that they did not harm her in
any way. In fact they were quite gentle with her and
just told her to stay in the room and not come out.
When they had finished they took all the keys they
could find in the house, took the telephone line out
of the phone, broke the padlock on the gate and placed
one of their own there. When my mother-in-law finally
managed to free her self, she could not use the phone
or get out of the house and no one could get in
through the gate. The dog had been drugged and was
lying on the lawn outside. When my brother-in-law
finally managed to get into the house she had been
alone for a few hours. When the Police arrived they
noticed a piece of red cloth on one of the bushes by
the gate and they said that the house had been marked.
I would like to warn people to be on the look out when
they come home for these types of signs:- any unusual
things hanging by the gate, the same people hanging
around on a daily basis, cars following them home or
sitting in the road near the gate when leaving for
work or coming home.
Some of the items they stole were three air rifles I
had purchased for my sons for Christmas. I am worried
that they may use them for other robberies or try and
sell them. They also took a TV, Hi Fi equipment,
radios, clothes and a lot more.
People, please be aware of what is happening around
you. The festive season will soon be upon us. Be
vigilant when shopping and coming out of the banks. It

BORROW STREET POOL
I spent many many happy hours at Borrow St as a
teenager with my mates checking out the chicks, and
sometimes swimming. But my local pool was North End
where I just about lived when I was in junior school,
having a season ticket every year. You could have so
much fun - the waterfights, playing 'Sharks In',
dive-bombing the girls...My mate Boet and I used to
take a tractor tyre to play on, and we would roll it
down the road for the mile or so from our houses to
the pool.
I don't remember the herons at Borrow St, but I do
remember the weaver birds. There used to be some big
palm trees near the diving boards, and I remember
every spring seeing dozens of little weavers making
their magical gourd shaped nests high up in the
fronds. They were amazing.
Now I live in Grantham in England. It's about the size
of Bulawayo I reckon. There is ONE public swimming
pool here. It's indoors, 8 lanes wide and just 25m
long. It not only has to cater for the general
population of the town, it's also shared by most of
the local schools who don't have their own pools.
There are rules banning just about anything that might
be fun. There's nowhere to sit or lie down just
chilling. You come out of the changing rooms directly
into the pool where you must swim until you get out
when there is nothing else to do but go back to the
changing rooms. The place always stinks of chlorine
and has no direct sunlight or fresh air. I used to
love swimming. My wife doesn't understand why I never
go here.
