The Haven, a battered and abused women's' shelter has been in
existence for the last 10 years. It was started by Women in Law and
subsequently taken over by the University Women's' Association.

Woman in trouble are able to make contact with the shelter from
clinics, hospitals, police stations and through the welfare.  They
are then collected and taken to the shelter with their children
where
they are fed and clothed and given time to heal and formulate a plan
for their futures.  At the moment there are 22 people at the home, 9
women and their children.  They find themselves at the shelter often
with only the clothes on their backs and the children are removed
from their homes and schools and everything that is familiar.

The Haven is in need of everything…..   Clothes for the women and
their children who age from newborn to 12 years at the
moment,                                                Food
Beds and bedding
Cots and high chairs
Material scraps ( the home has a sewing machine_)
Wool and knitting needles
Books, magazines, crayons paper, toys, games
Curtains
Kitchen equipment
Anyone prepared to go to the home and spend time with the women or
their children, providing healing activities, such as painting and
drawing, learning to knit or crochet,or sew,  drama, etc.

CAN SOMEONE KIND IN ENGLAND ARRANGE A GOLF DAY FOR THE SPCA !!

Maggie, someone yesterday told me that they had had a Golf Day in
England and the proceeds would go to 'SOAP'.
With our network of Morning Mirror readers, would you not be able to
ask 'Someone out There', to think about a GolfDay for SPCA?  All
these people have left this wonderful country and some have
abandoned
their dogs, whom WE have to look after, but SPCA with all the good
they're doing, rescuing these poor little pooches, desperately need
assistance.  I wonder if we'd get any response?
Just a thought.

QUEEN MARY HOUSE

We are once again asking for any balls of wool scraps of  wool, left
over or otherwise for our "knitting ladies" at Queen Mary House.  We
have a number of elderly residents who knit blankets and whatever
for
sale or to be given away as gifts to those needy folk in Bulawayo.
The "knitting ladies" are now running out of wool and would so
appreciate any help we can get with this.

Thank you Bulawayo public for your continuing support.

Great web site. I am an ex Zimbo now living in Mexico with my wife
and family. I left in 2001 when times were quite tough. I had no
work
and could not find any. I am now a naturalised Mexican citizen but
my
heart will for ever be in Zim. My wife who is a mexican also loves
Zim and Africa. My eldest daughter who is now three just wants to go
to visit Africa (she has never been there -  it must be something in
the blood). At present it is too expensive for us but one day we
will
return to visit. We are expecting our second child sometime in the
next few days. My poor wife is really struggling. We go to an
international church here in Mexico city and there is a South
African
couple that attend as well. Amazingly as well we have quite a number
of Nigerians who also attend the church.
I am actually the Great grandson of John Lee. My grandmother was
Lily
Campbell ex Plumtree. I hope one day to take my children and wife to
see the old farmhouse etc in Mangwe.
The only family that I have in Zim now is my Aunt and Uncle Lu and
Mike Brough who are living in Harare. Another good friend of the
family who is in Bulawayo whom I am not sure if you know her is
Nookie Alport.
Anyway just thought I would drop you a line to say hi and to
thankyou
for such great website. How about some photos of Plumtree? By the
way
is Reps still in operation, and has anyone you know gone fishing in
Umslanga dam near Mangwe? I often wonder what the fishing is like
there now as I used to go there often with my Gran in the 70's. I
will send you a link to our website so that you can see something of
me and my family. I am not too sure how the English side is but the
Spanish side is pretty up to date.

Tick Removal
Please forward to anyone with children . or hunters, etc!! thanks!

A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share --
And it really works!! I had a paediatrician tell me what she
believes
is the best way to remove a tick.
This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes
difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a
head full of dark hair, etc.

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with
the
soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for

few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own
and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.
This technique has worked every time I've used it (an d that was
frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier
for me.

Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be
damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice
because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with
tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to
say,
"It worked!"

Please pass on; everyone needs this helpful hint.

GIRLS' COLLEGE NEWS

As early in the term as we are, I already have good things to report
to you.  The Intwasa Arts Festival has been running in Bulawayo.  In
the Junior Short Story Competition in which eleven schools
representing five districts of Matabeleland had entered, two of our
girls – Sarhanna Hassim and Tanya Hunt, were short-listed and also
invited to attend a one day workshop on Creative Writing.  At the
Prize-giving at the National Arts Gallery, Sarhanna Hassim won the
prize for the second best story of the entire competition, while
Tanya Hunt was awarded the prize for the best story overall.  In the
adult short story competition, a member of our English Department
teaching staff, Ms Bryony Rheam, won the top prize for her story.
We
are very proud of these three ladies and we encourage everyone to
keep writing!

Three of our young ladies, Shayne Ellman Brown, Kelly Ellman Brown
and Jamie-Lee Holtzhausen, have been chosen to play in the Zimbabwe
Polocrosse teams to meet Zambia over the weekend of the 15-17
September.  We wish them every success as they face this challenge.
Hats off to our Water Polo teams who won all their games against
Convent and CBC over this last weekend.

News from the Girls College Child Development class:  After visiting
KGV1 on a field trip, the girls decided to sponsor a needy child at
the Centre. They ran a raffle at the Winter Fayre and received
donations from family and friends and drew from their pocket money
allowances.  They managed to raise $23 000 the amount needed for one
term's school fees.  This money has been given to a 10 year old
deaf,
orphaned girl who the class are going to meet on Wednesday 13
September.  KGV1 phoned last week and invited the class to their
band's farewell concert on Thursday 7 September.  All the girls
attended and thoroughly enjoyed the show.  The band left on Friday
for their tour of Sweden, Netherlands, and Belgium.

My name is Adrian Henriques, I was born in Salisbury in 1974 but
moved to Bulawayo not long after.
We lived there till 1983 then moved to South Africa. In 1987 we
moved
to Canada and this is pretty much where we have settled.
Although I was only nine years old when we left I have many fond
memories. I attended Hillside Infant and Hillside Primary schools(I
think I have the names right.)
I have been searching the internet for pen pals from Bulawayo to
write to, I'd love to hear about someone's everyday live in
Bulawayo.
If you yourself or if you know someone who has similar background
and
age as myself I love to hear back.
Thank you, Adrian.

THE AFRICA CHALLENGE

London to Falcon - Overland

Since I last posted news back in April there have been many
developments.

Firstly – When travelling through Africa each country has a
different
set of visa requirements. To be fair it is relatively simple to
obtain visas through the respective consulates in London, however
there are a few places that are, should we say, challenging. I
applied for a visa for Libya as I had heard this would be the most
difficult one to obtain after Sudan. The process was a challenge in
itself but the cost of obtaining the visa was prohibitive at just
under £500 for a three day visit, which basically meant I was
looking
for an alternative route!!

Routes through Africa one would imagine would be quite easy, in fact
there are three main ones that are used. The first is accessible
from
Spain through to Morocco provided you wish to travel the West Coast
of Africa. The second is Italy through to Tunisia, and into Libya,
discussed above! The third is to drive through Europe, Turkey,
Syria,
and Jordan into Egypt…..I have now chosen the third option.

My route now takes me through France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia,
Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan,
Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and into
Zimbabwe.

Secondly – Whilst planning my trip I found that everyone I spoke was
very interested in what I was planning and where I am going, but no
matter how big the interest, it was a massive challenge to get a
travel buddy.

I figured the best way around this was to join several overland web
pages and advertise through there, which I did and had no joy.

I had given up all hope of finding someone to travel with me when I
emailed Dan Baring for some advice on a topic he had written about,
and found that he too was going to be travelling the same route at
more or less the same time as I was planning.

To cut a very long story short, Dan (with two Land Rovers – four
people) and I have decided that there is definitely safety in
numbers
and the trip would be enjoyed more with a few more people.

To date there are six of us driving four Land Rover Defender 110's.
The crew names are:
•      John Laing             –       London to Falcon
•      Graham Crouch       –       London to Cairo
•      Andy Laing             –       Cairo to Nairobi
•      Dan Baring             –       London to Cape Town
•      Bianca Uliana             –       London to Cape Town
•      James Sale             –       London to Cape Town
•      Charles Eyre             –       London to Cape Town
•      Graham Crouch       –       London to Cairo
At this stage all seems to be back on track for the now 18,000
kilometre voyage through Africa.

As far as the preparations have gone I am now well under way to
finalising everything:

Vehicle – This is nearly completed. I will be replacing the
suspension system, renewing all the oil seals, replacing all the
rubber bushes and servicing the vehicle. Spare parts have been
bought
and a full tool box  and first aid kit will be carried.

Accommodation – I have purchased a roof top tent which is more
practical for a trip of this magnitude. I did try out a ground tent
but the hassle associated with putting a tent up each evening means
that the additional cost is well worth it.

Food – A full supply of dry and non perishable items have been
bought
for the trip, all vegetables, fruit, and meat will be bought en
route. Water:  I have had a 40l water tank complete with tap fitted
to the underneath of my land rover which means I do not take up
valuable space within the cab.

Fuel – I have been fortunate enough to have been given 210 litres of
diesel which will hopefully get me through to Istanbul, Turkey. This
is a massive saving as each litre in the UK costs 104 pence.

Paperwork – All has been completed, resignations have been tendered,
notice on my flat has been handed in. The vehicle paperwork is all
in
order, and my visas have been granted for Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and
Ethiopia, the rest I will get en route.

Packing – This seems to be the head ache that I have left, I am not
sure what I am going to do with this except maybe sell most of my
stuff at a car boot sale. I have not collected  much stuff in the UK
and what I have is sentimental so I do not want to part with it so
may find it necessary to send some stuff back by ship via Cape Town,
which is a good reason for me to extend my journey!!

Sponsorship – This has been a very interesting experience, both I,
and of course Falcon College, are indebted to those who have
supported us so far.    As mentioned in previous mailings my
motivation is to collect money for the College. We still need lots
more support, and I urge anyone reading this to please make a
donation.   Please remember none of the funds raised go towards the
costs of the trip, I have funded this from my own pocket, all money
raised will be going towards bettering the facilities at Falcon.
There are about 3000 Falcon Old Boys,  if each gave just £20 we
would
make £60K for the College, that would be a fantastic achievement!!!

Donations can be sent to the official Old Boys bank accounts in
London or Johannesburg details of which have been circulated or can
be provided again upon request.

Thank you for reading this.    And thank you for your interest and
support for our Old School.    It's surely a good cause.

Looking for an EXPERIENCED gardener, full time, good salary, live
in,
will provide perks.  Traceable references are a must.
I have realised that it has become very difficult to find domestic
maids and gardeners, that are fully trained in the work they have to
do, in their conduct and etiquette and who have traceable
references.  Is there anyone out there that does domestic workers
training?  Is there a need for this service? Please reply.
Please phone Mary Anne 252201 / 011 407 301 sweetman@mweb.co.zw

Please do take note of the advice given by Tracey Burns with regard
to employing staff who have not been checked out or who do not have
TRACEABLE references.  I have recently had to dismiss a Maid and
Gardener who stole a LARGE amount of money and also items too
numerous to mention!  The replacement gardener, who did not even
last
one month, was also dismissed for theft.
