LIYANA BAND
The King George VI Band, now known as Liyana, took part in an 
international music competition in Mozambique and won the prize of
a 
tour of Sweden, Netherlands and Belgium.  They will be leaving on 8 
September.
They will be holding a 'pre-tour' show on Thursday 7 September at 
5.30 at KGVI.  If you want to give them some support and enjoy a 
great show at the same time please come.
Entrance is free but of course donations are always welcome!

Stadium in Kumalo, Townsend Road, 7th street on SUNDAY the 29th 
OCTOBER 2006.
     This will open at 2pm culminating in a professional firework 
display in the early evening. This is a family event with full bar 
and catering facilities, also static displays. All proceeds will go 
to S.O.A.P.  This huge event will continue year to year.
Fundraising 
has been on last Sunday in October for the last six years and SOAP 
has been the lucky recipient for the last 2 years. This social 
gathering has proved to be a very popular event assisting SOAP to 
continue in its' work for Bulawayo's precious old folk.
     The stand price is $6,000(000) and includes admission for a
car 
and two people, exhibitors parking will be within the stadium.

The Bulawayo Orchid Society will be holding its Annual Fair on:

AUCTIONEERS AT RISK !

On the 26th of September 2005 we delivered a large selection of
items 
to a certain Bulawayo firm of auctioneers for sale on our behalf.
We 
provided them with a comprehensive list of over fifty articles 
including clothing, kitchenware and other household equipment. A 
couple of the things were sold on the next couple of sale days but 
then a problem arose - our property seemed to disappear!
Between September and the end of November I called at the
auctioneers 
on no less than seventeen occasions in an effort to recoup
something 
from all the items we had left for sale. Finally, on 25th November,
I 
was offered a cheque for a totally derisory amount to cover the
fifty-
odd items outstanding. Obviously I could not accept this - I
declined 
the cheque. I was assured that the matter would be investigated and 
put right.
On the 4th December 2005 I wrote a frank letter to the manager of
the 
company concerned, outlining my case. I did not get a reply until 
February 2006!
Notwithstanding the tardiness of the reply I was assured that the 
company had sorted out its problems and would attend to my
complaint. 
But .......
In June this year, I wrote again to find out what progress they had 
made, I delivered the letter in person. Now, two months later,
still 
no joy.
What does one do in a case like this? I have heard of many similar 
instances involving the very same firm of auctioneers - people are 
being cruelly ripped off in the most immoral and unethical way. The 
money involved in my instance was not substantial but it would have 
been useful; today that money is worthless. However, it is not the 
money that is important, it is the principle - dishonesty is
despicable.
Perhaps it would be best in the end to just publish details in an 
effort to "name and shame" the individual.

My grandfather Michael Ignatius Griffin arrived in Bulawayo in 1897 
and apparently was quite a 'big shot' there in the early days. He 
built the Carlton Hotel and various other significant structures,
and 
established and farmed Cowdray Park where he died in the '50's (I 
think). He was married to a Mary Francey (Irish). I think he was 
Australian!
