TIDBITS

Small sadnesses

Last year we had a pair of Heuglin Robins build their delightful cup-shaped nest in a hanging basket in our courtyard, & we had so much enjoyment watching the little chicks' progress. The big day came when they plucked up courage & took off on their first flight, only to land in the flower bed at the bottom of the courtyard wall. The parents were very encouraging - feeding them constantly, calling continuously & giving live demonstrations on how to fly VERTICALLY to the top of the wall. After two days the littlest one used lateral thinking (I'm sure she had to be female ! ) & climbed/clawed her way up the creeper to the top, where she was able to fly to the nearest tree. The little male (!?) was not so smart & his parents were in despair at his lack of progress.

After three days I decided to break all the rules & go to his help, but in his fright, as I approached him very gently, he flew to the table in the centre of the courtyard. From there he was able to fly in a normal fashion to the top of the wall. Even my gardener was moved to clap & cheer this feat!

To my delight the birds came back to nest in the hanging basket again this year, but one day after the babies hatched they totally vanished.

We can only assume one of the shrikes had been watching with interest, & had itself a good meal.I was devastated, so goodness knows how the little parents felt. Such is the way of the wild.

My wife works for a South African doctor here in Canada. They were discussing the state of the Zim farmer. Any way, he has kindly offered to sponsor a Zim family to come and live here in Canada. If you know of such a family wanting to make a fresh start, please send them my e-mail address and have them contact me. I will send them more details. Please don't give my address to a bunch of people as there is no way that we'll be able to decide who to choose.

"In the game of life even the 50-yard line seats don't interest me. I came to play!!!"

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

A culture of giving is one where people care about each other and know that their own well-being is inextricably linked to the well-being of others."
