We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. AT LAST NEWS FROM COLIN AND JUDY MARTIN Great to hear from Judy and Colin in Cape Town, they seem well and happy. Judy was an "extra" in a film !! If anyone would like their new e mail address please contact me at magskriel@mac.com. NEWS FROM GAIL SMYTHE AND FAMILY Well the Smythe's have arrived in Perth. We have only been here 3 weeks and are still in the holiday mode but are getting things together. We had a good laugh when we booked Shari, our eldest daughter, into the high school we chose - Mater Dei College - and realised what the initials were ... We thought that had to be a sign of the right choice! They are emblazed beautifully on her school bag and we're really proud of it. We are moving into our own (rented) house on the weekend which is great but I'm not looking forward to the household chores being landed firmly on my shoulders. Amazing though how quickly everybody does learn to pull their weight. The weather has been sunny with quite a bit of well needed rain though. It rains about 20 times in a day here - on and off all day with no lightning or thunder. I do miss those dramatic african thunder storms. We are busy searching for a car now and hope we won't be ripped off. Yes they are everywhere - those types. Green horns from Zim seem to be a prime target but as we have many friends and have made some more already we are using their expertise to the fullest. The speed limits are amazing: 50 in the suburbs, 70 on the more main suburban roads (like Cecil), 80 on the busier roads (like Hillside) and a speedy 100 on the highway. It is great though and once you get used to it you realise how safe and stress free it all is. You know when you start overtaking cars you're going too fast. Shopping is wonderful but I must admit I feel guilty everytime I stand for 10 minutes trying to choose WHAT type of bread to buy..... I've even filled up the hire car with fuel all by myself. Dave Wright would be proud! Anyway if anyone wants any migration advice about how to join us in this great place you can contact me at Ross Relocation services soon as I start work there soon. rrs@global.net.au Regards François VANOT I wonder if my name rings a bell; probably not, it's been such a long time; we left Bulawayo in 1997 after living 6 years there (I ran the French Dept à Hillside T.C., as well as the Alliance Française) and you interviewed me a couple of times,on your radio programme, back in 1992 (that's why I say it's been a long time) and in 1994 when we organized a float, with horses, to commemorate the Bulawayo centenary. I only heard today about your website, thanks to Lee Gilmaster; I've just enrolled to get the Morning Mirror through email; I already read everyday about what's happening down there (I get the press review of ZNews as well as Cathy Buckle's newsletter) We are appalled at what's happening in Zimbabwe. I was again in Byo early 2000 when it all really started. It's just heartbreaking; We wish you all "bon courage" François
Lilian Hawkes passed away recently at the age of 100 years . Remembered by her daughter Joy, and all the family
