TOUR DE FALCON

TOUR DE FALCON

The Cape Argus Cycle Race had better be on on its toes as a new and exciting cycle tour is fast making its mark in Southern Africa !

The Tour De Falcon is in its third year now and with the amazing scenery and topography that is incorporated in the race, it is fast becoming a hot destination for cyclists from all corners of the world !!

The Tour De Falcon commences in the City of Kings- Bulawayo - where the streets are wide enough to turn an entire span of oxen, and it ends in the Esigodini foothills , fondly known as the Blue Hills to those residents of Matabeleland who come annually to ride this prestigious race.

Apart from celebrity riders who swarm in from various parts of the world, riders of the calibre of Garth Steinbach , Clem Peinke and Lee McNab there are a few local "Personalities" who add colour and flavour to the day.

Kneeguard Roy is always there faithfully supporting his wife who is one of the driving forces behind the race. Anything that Yvonne does she does well and with dedicated and efficient gusto !!

Sostrong Thompson is a grim contender most years and this year we hope to have quite a few "Old Boys" (not literally of course), who have come to Esigodini for the legendary "Falcon Old Boys Weekend"

That indomitable duo on the clockwork orange Cannondale tandem - Dangerous Dave and Reckless Rick, will no doubt grace the race with their own brand of wisdom. The theory behind their attempts to win depend on a complicated set of mathematical statistics wherein "the driving force of adipose mass multiplied by the sum of money in the bank and divided by the force of the wind from the west is undoubtedly a winning formula !!

Serious Lady competitors include lovely Loretta, and sometimes that amazing athlete Bonnie finds time in her racing schedule to partake in the fun.

The race has several categories - team riders, Little People, mixed bags, ladies and men, racing bikes, mountain bikes, juniors and veterans and of course the Elite riders.

The race support system is second to none and past years have seen staff and the public all hanging from their cars and vans with red flags flapping in the wind, hazard lights on and all flashed to on coming traffic, warning them of the enormous bunch of cyclists they were about to encounter.

Of course the TS Matabele Sea cadets are always there with Captain Peter and MARS of course never misses the day,

The competition in this race is legendary as a large proportion of the teams are made up of Falcon Schoolboys from the six boarding houses of this prestigious Zimbabwean School.

Fierce competitors from Chubb, Founders, George Grey, Hervey, Oates and Tredgold Houses band together in fours and practise furiously for months prior to the race.

I gather from informers in the dining room that much discussion ensues as to how to adequately protect the derriere from saddle sores.

And of course a winter's Sunday at Falcon College traditionally has a special glow.

Falcon is good at anything and everything it does, their fields are lush green and immaculate. The planning is the ultimate in perfection. The parents lay on a luncheon spread second to none, the bar offers ice cold beer and wine the mothers usually stage a fabulous craft fayre where exotic crafts can be purchased and laid away for Christmas.

Lovely Loretta's musical better half, (probably after riding the race himself) mans a disco of mean proportions and participants and supporters alike can relax after the race on the Bushtick lawns and enjoy the camaraderie as only Matabeleland knows how.

So come along one and all and join in the fun Sunday 3 July 2006. for further enquiries e mail Yvonne on

SYMPATHY MESSAGES

CONDOLENCES
I remember Father Odilo from my school years at the Dominican Convent, and then later on, while working at the Mater Dei Hospital. He used to visit every single bedside, often in the evenings, and have a cheery smile and a kind word for each patient. I especially appreciated his joyful greetings when I was facing a long night shift! What a wonderful testimony he portrayed of Christian love. He will no doubt be missed by many people indeed. God bless you and your family.
Love,
Vicki & family.(New Zealand Zimbos)

Father Odilo
It is with great sadness I read of the passing of Father Odilo. He was a friend to all, a man of great dignity, a true man of G-d. It didn't matter what one's religion was - in time of need, he was there. I will never forget his great kindness to my mum Tamara Dessington, a Jew, with whom he would recite prayers in English, German and Hebrew. They were friends for forty years. May his Dear Soul R.I.P

We, who were privileged to have known Father Odilo, experience profound sadness to know that he has finally departed this mortal plane, but we know without any doubt that he is where he deserves to be.....with his beloved Lord and Saviour, who he served so faithfully and joyfully all his life.
Long before we ever got to know Father Odilo personally, we listened to his wise council regularly on the radio. Now that's going back some! His messages conveyed his exuberance for life, his joyful spirit, the love for his fellow man, and his warm sense of humour. We finally got to meet Father Odilo when our son Grant spent a month in the Mater Dei recovering from a rugby injury and he was visited every day by Father Odilo on his 'rounds'. He was indeed a delightful, loveable & loving character. His finest Christian message was his own shining example, entirely Christlike. God's presence shone through him loud & clear!
Being unapologetic 'whenwes' we often reminisce about the happy times we had in our beloved Zim. We relive only the positive aspects, many of which were spent in the bush, experiencing the incredible flora & fauna. We have unforgettable memories of our hiking trips in the magnificent Matobo, with Father Odilo, Aubrey Pakenham, Helga Beaumont & the rest of the gang. We never ever did meet anyone who knew more about the Matobo than Father Odilo. His knowledge was as vast as his love of the area, and he shared it with the enthusiasm, joy, energy & zest that characterised every aspect of his life! He would often, on the crest of a huge outcrop of granite, gaze in awe at the spectacular view, throw open his arms and thank the Lord for blessing us mere mortals with such abundant beauty !! Even after his heart ops he could spend a whole day bounding up & down the gommos, teaching us the names of all the granite giants in sight, revealing paintings in caves we'd never even heard of, taking us to secret places no one knew existed! He never tired! We used to leave early in the morning & usually returned after dark, and Father Odilo was still raring to go! He put even the youngest members of the team to shame! Wonderful, precious happy memories! We will treasure them always & be eternally grateful to have known the beautiful man, Father Odilo Weeger. A great Matabele and a wonderful Zimbabwean.
"Say not in grief he is no more, but in thankfulness he was". Our thoughts and prayers go to all those, who like us, loved him so.

I have just received a call from Lisa Tarr, who told me the very sad news that Darryl's dad, Wrex Tarr, passed away last night in East London, South Africa.
I'm sure EVERY Zimbabwean would remember Wrex, who became somewhat of a household name in the Seventies with his own special brand of "Chilapalapa" humour. He later became a very professional, likeable and popular media personality in the then Rhodesia.

I am sure you will all want to join me in passing on very sincere condolences to Darryl, Lisa and the rest of the family. He certainly will be remembered by many of us for many years to come.

Once again our very deepest and sincere sympathies to the family. Our thoughts are with you.

May His Soul Rest In Peace.

BSAP Field Reservist W Tarr 7084 won the President's Medal for Shooting in 1978. This achievement, together with his many Chilapalapa records was how Rhodesians will remember Wrex. Wrex died entertaining people. May he Rest in Peace.

Messages of Condolence will be sent to Wrexs family, wife Merry in a Special embroidered binder. Please feel free to leave yours in the posting room at www.Rhodiechat.com
