Do you remember playing 'Pass The Parcel' at various birthday parties
My Little Darlings, year in and year out, played Musical Cushions, Pin the Tail on The Donkey and of course that very favourite of all party games - Pass The Parcel.
How many Pass The Parcels have I wrapped in my life That is the burning question I asked myself this week, when my Grandson turned 8....
Three children, all played the game, for at least ten years until the novelty wore off and it was 'infra dig' to play silly party games. Now I am no mathematician but thats 3 x 10 x 12 equaling 360 parcels!!
I would carefully save the used Christmas wrapping paper in a box and use that to wrap the parcels.
Laborious, mindless, arduous, gruelling but definitely a labour of love. Sheet after sheet after sheet, the more layers the more the excitement grew as the parcel was passed, child to child, sitting in a large circle, music playing, and when the music stopped, the child who was holding the parcel at the time, would, amidst gleeful shouting from the onlookers, be allowed to tear one single sheet off the parcel.
Right at the heart of the parcel would be a small gift, a packet of smarties maybe , a sugar mouse a pink marshmallow fish
If luck would have it, the game of Pass the Parcel could occupy a whole thirty minutes of a birthday party and give the Mums and Dads a bit of glorious peace!
Last week I was tasked with wrapping a precious parcel for my Grandsons 8th birthday, but things have changed since my own Little Darlings were young!!
Oh no! No such thing as just ONE gift! Nowadays one is expected to provide a gift hidden in each and every single sheet of paper!!
What happened to the giddy anticipation, the excitement, the thrilling apprehension we experienced when we were young As that parcel was hurled from person to person, hoping, praying that this would be the very final sheet of paper
Not this cunning Grandma, remembering her own childhood, where jubilation and elation were not guaranteed, I only inserted one gift every five layers! Just to make life exciting!!
