SPECTRUM - BPO Concert : Robert Sibson Hall :: Saturday 24 July

The BPO Concert on 24 July is called SPECTRUM and will be rather different. It is designed to show the wide spectrum of amateur talent in Bulawayo and to incorporate (at the other end of the spectrum) the professional talent still willing to visit Bulawayo under the auspices of Performing Arts.

The performers range in age from 8 to over 80 and the music will range as widely! In the lower age group the recent Sponsored Festival Week at the Academy revealed some budding artists who performed with great aplomb, some of whom will be on stage again. Also performing during the Festival Week was the Girls College Jazz Band, who are about to undertake a tour of South Africa, with their Marimba Band and included in their programme will be the Fast Lane Jive.

Moving up the spectrum the BPO Chorus will sing choruses from Haydn’s Creation, Laudate Dominum (Mozart) and As Torrents in Summer (Elgar) accompanied by the strings of the orchestra. The orchestra will also be playing some chamber music and, at the top of the spectrum, we are delighted to have on our platform Fiona MacDonald, Nigel Boarer and Kevin Thraves from the UK who will be singing Ivor Novello, Bernstein, Gershwin, Rodgers & Hammerstein and Lloyd Webber!

Saturday 24 July at 8.15 pm at the Robert Sibson Hall (guarded parking).

Tickets from Meikles from 15 July or at the box office from 7.30. Prices $8 000 (members $4 000); students free.

PAB Concert
Fiona MacDonald & Nigel Boarer : Robert Sibson Hall :: Thursday 29 July

Fiona MacDonald (mezzo soprano) and Nigel Boarer (baritone) with pianist Kevin Thraves will perform songs by Handel, Brahms, Mozart, Strauss and Britten and, after the interval, music by Ivor Novello, Gershwin, Lloyd Webber and Rogers & Hammerstein.

Thursday 29 July at 7:30 pm at the Robert Sibson Hall (guarded parking).

Tickets from Meikles from 15 July or at the box office from 7.00. Prices $10 000 (members $6 000); students $1,000.

INTRODUCTION
Who are the Red Lions?
The Red Lions are a newly established Touring cricket team from Zimbabwe and will only play friendly matches. The Red Lions comprise of Zimbabwean International and First Class Cricketers. The Red Lions therefore have vast experience in the International Arena and boast an abundance of Test and One Day International Caps. Why Tour?
The Red Lions were formed out of a desire to promote the great game of cricket by playing matches against worthy opposition in an atmosphere of fun and frivolity. We feel this is the best way to use our combined years of experience and investment in a sport we all love. Why England?
We have chosen England as the destination for our inaugural tour because we have many friends and fans there gained from our past touring experiences.
What are our objectives?
To play friendly matches and use these fixtures as a means to raise funds for two Trusts, The Cricketers Trust and The Zimbabwe Pensioners Trust. With the continuing weakening of the Zimbabwean Currency and rampant inflation, Pensioners throughout Zimbabwe have fallen victim to the current climate. We would like to play a part in making life better for them.
To Personally thank our International Supporters in the UK, including Zimbabwean Expats in the Diaspora.
To personally get involved in visiting Schools and cricketing clubs on an informal Question and Answer basis. FUND RAISING
We have arranged two functions in Harare one being a Black Tie/Formal dinner to be held at Chapman Golf Club on Friday 2 July 2004 – tickets are still available. The second a golf day, which incorporates the Zimbabwe Pensioners Fund, to be held at Borrowdale Brook Golf course on Thursday 8 July 2004. For more information on the above please contact Gill on 011400777 or via e-mail gillian@pagesalive.co.zw.

Dear Eveline Old Girls,

Sadly we have had to cancel the 2nd Eveline Reunion which was to be held in Pietermaritzburg on the 21st August. We required at least 50 confirmed (paid up) participants by the 1st of July, in order to confirm the venue and other arrangements. Unfortunately only 21 payments, were received. May be we can try again in 2005 at a more central venue ?

N.B. Those of you who sent confirmation of payment will be refunded. Please let me have your banking details, as soon as possible, in order to refund your money.

Best wishes

Lal Grobler.

ANTI HIJACK TRUST

BULAWAYO UPDATE

28/06/04

The Trust in Bulawayo has not heard of any new hijackings - maybe people are becoming more aware, lets hope so, and that our awareness campaign has finally hit home to some people.

One interesting incident that I had to deal with last month, was a husband and wife who were driving from Triangle to Esigodini to collect their children for the weekend. On feeling a little tired, they decided to stop and swop over with the driving. On doing this, a car which had appeared slowly over the hill, sped up and blocked them off. There was a short fight with the wife breaking one of her fingers and the husband been beaten and kicked by the assailants, but these men still managed to get the car. Thankfully the couple managed to get to the police stations at Esigodini and Filabusi whereupon the police were efficient enough in setting up road blocks immediately, and radioing various bases. The husband got his car back, but only after a woman who was asked to drive the car for the hijackers became nervous and went to Bulawayo Police station with information. The amazing thing about this incident, is that the owner had to pay the woman money in order to get his car back before she would give out any information, and this was all done at Bulawayo Central Police Station. The mind boggles!

There has certainly been a serious increase in house robberies, with the majority done at night when people are at home, so these people are getting verbally and physically abused by the "supposed" thieves. I say "supposed", because if they were just thieves, they would tie people up and ransack the area, not abuse the people. This seems to be totally out of control and I ask everyone to be vigilant in keeping their doors locked, and windows closed in the areas they are not using for the evening, and even if they want the back or front doors open, get a security grill door with a decent padlock.

I am available for counseling on house break-ins, as well as hijackings and I give speeches to companies, groups and schools. Please contact me on 011-701 323 or crime@mweb.co.zw . Any donations will be gladly received. My biggest wish is that I need help with payment of the landline. In the next news letter I shall have a wish list and see if anyone out there is prepared to help.

Hello my name is Linda from Cape Town. I am looking for an old friend of my late mother Ila. Her name is TRUDI RATSCH. They lived in Cape Town in the late 1960's. I have letters my late mother kept now in my custody which I would like to give to Trudi. Trudi used to call my mom
