He has risked arrest, harassment, victimisation and loss of his farm, all at great personal expense in terms of money, time and effort. He has demonstrated a degree of courage and determination second to none and remains steadfast in his quest to remain on his farm and ensure that justice ultimately prevails for all farmers. He is married to Kay and they have three children. Kay was taken ill a few weeks ago with a chronic stomach complaint, and spent about two weeks in the Mater Dei Hospital - Bulawayo. Over Christmas her condition deteriorated rapidly and on doctors' advice Dave decided to fly her to Johannesburg on a special charter flight. Whilst in the air she suffered a seizure which was so bad that doctors decided a helicopter was the only suitable means of transport from Lanseria airport to the hospital. She underwent emergency surgery which revealed chronic infection. Surgeons removed what they had to, and took a calculated risk that what remained would respond to treatment to enable her to lead a normal life. There is no doubt at all that had she not been flown to South Africa, Dave and his family would have lost her by now. The pathologist has advised that the destruction of the intestine was of such magnitude that he considers poisoning to be the most probable cause. One can only speculate at this stage on the source of the poison. As we write this e mail, there is a possibility that a further operation may be necessary. If it is, then she will not be able to lead a normal life again. Her condition remains critical but stable. She is presently in a medically induced coma. The Conolly's have no medical aid. The cost of the South African side of this saga to date stands at R300,000. Dave needs help. Our help. And fast. He and his family have enough worries on their hands without worrying about how they are going to pay for all of this. The cost in Zim dollar terms today is about $250m. We need to help him and Kay through this ordeal. Please be generous on this and support. Let's stand together and see them through. We shall all be better for it. There is so much to tell you as we have not had the resources to produce a Newsletter for about 18 months now. Subsequently this Newsletter is FULL of interesting stories. If you're short of time, why not scroll down, pick an item of interest to read now, & read the rest at your leisure at a later date? Or visit our website at www.chipangali.co.zw The first & perhaps most important piece of news is that this year is Chipangali's 30th Birthday! We remain strong, dedicated & fully operational, despite the long term economic situation here in Zimbabwe. Let me introduce you to the Staff Kevin & Nicky Wilson are busy as ever at the Orphanage; Kevin with photography, computers & general management; Nicky juggling her full-time role as Mum, with running our Business Centre & tackling Chipangali's all-important accounts. Cal King has been with us for just over a year now as Manager of the Orphanage & his 3 hour tours with our "overlander" visitors are a very memorable experience for one & all. We currently have 3 dedicated volunteers working with us - Zoë Lapthorn & Claire Lupton from the UK & Philip Steel from right here in Bulawayo. Zoë works on our cheetah breeding programme, produces Breaking News releases & Newsletters, & is busy relaunching our Animal Adoption Scheme. Claire IS Orphan Annie's Mum ~ all our new arrivals, especially the babies, come to Claire for their initiation! This includes feeding, washing, rehousing ... & of course weeing & pooing them! Each & every orphan (including Braai the annoying chick) is given 24 hour care, love & attention by this lovely lady. Philip is primarily our bird man, though has also been specialising more recently in rats & lizards! Although young, he is already very knowledgeable about all manner of birds & is proving to be a valued member of our team. Leslie Siziba, whose role as Education Officer at Chipangali is very kindly funded by DED in Germany, has been putting together a brochure this year, promoting our work & activities to schools. The team would not be complete without our 30 general workers who feed & water all the animals, fix things, keep the flower beds looking healthy & our visitors feeling refreshed & relaxed in both the Tea Room & the Bush Camp. Whilst at our Town Office, Viv Wilson & his research assistant Talana Gregory are both busy with various new & ongoing projects, both in the office & out in the field, being supported as always by Louise Gouwer in the office. Animal Adoption Scheme We are already reaping the rewards for the major relaunch of our Animal Adoption Scheme, which we began just a few weeks ago. Since our first Adoption Update which was emailed in the middle of last month & our first Breaking News release in early December, we have already taken on board 20 new adoption sponsors, which is fantastic news for our orphans. ALL our animals, birds & reptiles (currently numbering over 200) are up for adoption & are split into different categories, allowing you to choose how much you are able to contribute towards their food & upkeep. In return for your support we will email you a Certificate boasting a large colour photograph of your adopted animal for you to display at home & at work, a Data Sheet briefly outlining your animal's personal history whilst also giving some interesting facts about its species, & you will of course continue to be kept fully informed of all the activities here at Chipangali via Breaking News Releases & Newsletters. WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADOPT ME? Adoption payments will soon be able to be made online by credit card using "Paypal", a simple, yet secure & reliable system, used worldwide by thousands of organisations. If you would like to hear more about our Animal Adoption Scheme, receive an Adoption Form, & discover just how easy it is to become a sponsor, please email Zoë at chipangali@netconnect.co.zw, our new address set up solely for Adoptions. Birthday News To commemorate Chipangali's 30th Birthday celebrations this year, we put on a Movie Premiere of the action packed James Bond film "Die Another Day". 150 people attended, raising a lot of funding for the Orphanage. We are hoping to put on another function next month. Another notable birthday is that of our 'ancient' caracal Zeus, who is this year celebrating his 25th birthday ~ quite an achievement. Births at the Orphanage We have had so many births at the Orphanage over this past year that there are too many to list here, but I would like to mention just a few. Rudi was born to our resident pair of steenbok last month & is being hand-reared by Claire, since the last 3 steenbok fawns have all died. A couple of blue duikers were also born here, but sadly only one survived & is happily doing very well in our Lady Di Centre. We have had a few jackal pups born here, including Half Pint who only has half a tail & is incredibly cute, & a few lion cubs too, 4 of whom (Suku, Menie, Pomongwe & Maleme) still live in Kevin & Nicky Wilson's garden, even at 8 & 10 months old, terrorising all their guests! Their good friend Raza, the 10 month old leopard cub, completes this inspiring fivesome. Zoë & Zap were born to mumKayla & dad Murdoch on 4 December & are keen to be adopted, as Kayla was unfortunately unable to feed them. Take a look at Zap being fed here & just try & refuse that adorable little face... Comment from Zap: "Milk is very expensive here in Zimbabwe & I'm drinking more & more at every feed. My pocket money doesn't stretch to much more than that & in a few weeks I'm going to have to buy meat too! Would you like to ADOPT ME to help cover the ever soaring costs of my food & drink? That was a strenuous plea, so I'm going back to sleep now. Happy Christmas to you. Roarrrrrr. Zzzzzz." Many of you will have seen Ratty (the baby squirrel found in our laboratory), in our recent Breaking News release. He has grown up so much & all his natural instincts are kicking in very quickly now. We found a newborn genet outside a leopard enclosure 3 weeks ago & have named him Jenatu. We are hand-rearing him & were delighted when he opened his eyes for the first time just a few days ago ... although he is of course a lot more active & time-consuming as a consequence. Calendars For the first time in 30 years & due entirely to the current economic struggle here in Zimbabwe, we found ourselves unable to produce our wonderful calendars this year. This has disappointed so many of our valued customers & we do apologise wholeheartedly for this. We are already busy making a plan to ensure that this does not happen again & that there will always be Chipangali Wildlife Calendars available to you all. Education The number of school children visiting Chipangali has increased by 2,000 this year! Even more notable perhaps than that is the increase in the number of schools sending their children to us - from 80 schools last year to 167 this year. Anyone wishing to discuss ideas for fundraising activities for school children, should please telephone Leslie on Bulawayo 287739 or 287740. Fanatical about Fish? The glass in our aquarium in the Lady Di Centre split at the beginning of the year & our wide variety of indigenous fish unfortunately died whilst it was being replaced. We now have just 4 sad & lonely bass on display for our visitors. So all you keen local fishermen out there, the next time you go to sink your hook at the dams at Inyankuni or Mayfair, why not try & catch us some fish to keep our poor bass company, & drop them off on your way back into town? Game Park A kudu & an impala were found snared in our game park, right next to the Orphanage this year, neither animal surviving its ordeal. On a much brighter note, however, 6 male kudu jumped into our game park just a couple of months ago, later leaving the park once more. Other newcomers into the park this year have been 7 bushpigs & several families of jackals & their pups. We believe that all this activity is due to pressure from outlying farming areas on game to move out of the farms & into the game park. Little News Nduna, our baby black rhino, born here at Chipangali last year, is growing up fast & is still very attached to her mum, Bambi. Word has been getting out about Raza, Suku & Menie, Pomongwe & Maleme, & many visitors have had some memorable close encounters with these guys. Moves Selousi (a lion) & Lundi (a leopard), both born at the Orphanage 10 & 18 months ago respectively & both hand-reared by Viv Wilson at our town office, were brought back to the Orphanage this year as they were getting a little too hard to handle in an office environment! Both have settled in very nicely, though both miss their "dad" of course, & Selousi still goes into the game park with Zoë (our volunteer, not our lion cub) for some well-needed exercise. Orphan Deliveries We were brought a pair of baby warthogs a week ago who were initially very frightened & naturally aggressive. However, Pork & Chop are now definitely a part of the family &, when not following Claire around the Orphanage, can be seen running wild in the garden outside the nursery. They love sucking people's fingers, but soon their teeth will perhaps be a little big for this exercise! 2 much smaller arrivals came in the form of a pair of 6 week old genets, Malteser & Mingle (pictured here). As with many brothers & sisters, one is often a lot braver & more mischievous than the other & this is especially true with this pair of rascals! Whilst Mingle was a little reserved at first, his character is building quickly & he is becoming just as naughty as his little sister. They keep poor Claire awake throughout the night, chasing each other around her room & playing with all the toys (theirs, not her's). Then of course there's VJ & Kevin, 2 jackal pups brought to us a few weeks ago, very frightened & very smelly. It took a lot of time & patience on Claire's part for them to finally eat, but now they're looking much stronger & enjoy playing together. Just a few of our other new arrivals over the year have included a civet, 5 domesticated servals from Bally Vaughn, 2 baby bush hares, a baby hedgehog, a Black Mamba, an Egyptian Cobra, & Bhebhe, the extremely friendly common duiker. Overseas Volunteer Programme As well as our 3 current volunteers, we have had the support of many others during this year, including Rob & Nicole (whom we hope to see again soon), Frances & Kristen, together with many school children & other groups, who have kindly volunteered their help during holidays & on weekends. Due to popular demand worldwide from like-minded people, we are about to launch our official Overseas Volunteer Programme in the next few months, taking on no more than 2 or 3 volunteers at one time. So if you are thinking about how & where to spend your holiday allowance for 2004, why not come & volunteer your services at Chipangali & get to experience the Wild Side of Africa? We can promise you a wide variety of exciting, hands-on activities & challenges at the Orphanage, whilst also allowing for time out to explore Zimbabwe, whether it be bungy jumping at Victoria Falls or viewing the abundant wildlife in Hwange National Park. For more information about this Programme, please contact Kevin or Claire atchipanga@ecoweb.co.zw Releases Just over a year ago, we were delighted to release 12 cheetah back intothe wild. These were all considered to be problem animals by local farmers & had been taken in by Chipangali 2 years previously. On 31 October 2002, we released 6 of these cheetah onto Sentinel Ranch, 2 into Matopos National Park (1 being radio collared), & the remaining 4 into Hwange National Park (2 being radio collared). Having fitted some of these animals with radio collars has enabled us to study & monitor them in their new environment. Thus we can see that the range of the group in Hwange has moved 50km from the point of release over the last 14 months. A few months ago we were fortunate enough to be at Hwange shortly after this group had killed a kudu cow, & we were able to film the 4 cheetah feeding on her. A kill of this size is a great achievement for any cheetah & a great success story for us. Featured in our Breaking News release was a pangolin our research team released into Hwange National Park in November. Others released include our gymnogene hawk, a few yellow-billed kites & spotted eagle owls (one of whom visited us just recently & spent the afternoon with our office staff up by the tea room) & a couple of genets, all of whom can often be seen flying & running wild & free right here on our premises. On just one day we were brought 25 tortoises of many varieties, as their owners were about to leave Zimbabwe. Last week we released many of these into our game park, where they are often seen roaming without a care in the world. Research Our research team continues to monitor the movement & home range of radio collared leopards & cheetah in Hwange & Matopos National Parks. In the Matopos & surrounding hills, our radio collared animals consist of 5 leopards, 1 brown hyaena & 1 cheetah, whilst in Hwange those collared consist of 2 cheetah & 1 leopard. Some good recent news is that the group of cheetah in Hwange now appear to have taken up residence in the Main Camp & the Nyamandhlovu area. The biodiversity survey in the Matopos continues, with some excellent results being obtained. If you wish to contact any of the research team, please email duiker@ecoweb.co.zw or visit their website www.chipangaliresearch.org.zw Sadness Tini, our little otter, died in March, leaving his good friend Otto to his own devices in their big new pond. Our primates have had a rough time lately, when last month a mystery illness killed 4 vervet monkeys & a baboon in quick succession over 4 days, & this last week we lost a further 4 vervets, Cheeky being just a youngster. Self-Release... Pumba, our friendly warthog, dug himself out of his enclosure earlier in the year to go & play with the black rhinos. Enjoying the freedom of the great outdoors, he finally decided to make his big getaway into the game park next door, where he has been seen on more than one occasion having an absolute ball! Veterinary Stevie Wonder, our blind baboon, sadly had to be euthanized this year. We believe that his frustration at being blind, coupled with his having become sexually mature, both contributed to his abnormal behaviour & he is sadly missed. Princess, one of our domesticated servals, became sick earlier in the year & was moved into our nursery. There was something wrong with her eyes & she was unable to see. Having been treated for a week, she made a lot of improvement & was returned to her enclosure. A week ago we introduced Princess to a fine male, whom she took to immediately & they have already been mating these past few days. Thank you We are very grateful to everyone who has supported us both financially & physically, & visited us throughout the year. Thanks also to all who have brought us sick, injured or abandoned animals, & offered their assistance worldwide to help spread our good name & worthy cause. Wishing you an enjoyable Christmas & a prosperous New Year from all the Staff & Animals at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage About us Chipangali Wildlife Adoption Scheme |
