With Christmas just a few short weeks away why not think of a plant - they are affordable and will give great pleasure year after year. We are open Mon-Fri 8.00 a.m. - 5.00p.m Justin's Progress Justin is the little chap who is paralysed from the knees down. I would like to give you an update on his progress. He is almost standing ON HIS OWN, amazing. What a determined little boy. He now has leg splints a walker and a wheelchair. He can count to 20 and is learning his ABC ! also has learned most of the colours. Through meetings, I have managed to get him in as a boarder to King George V1 children's home, he has been attending physiotherapy there for the past 3 months and has made many friends. Fortunately he is such a happy little boy. I would like to thank all the people who have so kindly contacted me through the months and donated so many, clothes, crayons, colouring in books, pencils and toys. Without you we would never have coped. People have contacted me from Australia, England, USA, Dubai, New Zealand and many from South Africa. Bless you all and a big thank you from Justin. e-mail richard.dollar@netconnect.co.zw CARMEL SCHOOL Carmel School has started a Grade "0" commencing in January 2004. This is a new project and as such we are starting from scratch. As you can imagine it is not an easy or cheap task to kit out a classroom. We do have some equipment to kick off the term but are appealing to all for a helping hand. If anyone, whose children have gone past the pre-school age, have any smile equipment, educational games, toys, books, puzzles etc that are cluttering up the closet we would only be to happy to take them off your hands. We are prepared to pay a fair price. If anyone can help, they can contact Tara Maidwell - baymee@gatorzw.com before Dec 26th and after that Barbara Goddard at Carmel School. Many Thanks GOOD NEWS FOR BYO !! A friend of mine is moving back to Bulawayo. She is a trained (UNISA) psychology councilor, specialising in children, although she also sees Adults too. She does not work with pure psychology, but uses Enneagram work, which encompasses much more the holistic and spiritual side to health. She works with grief, abuse, divorce, peer pressure, lack of self esteem, drugs, alcohol - you name it, but she does not do educational psychology work. She comes highly recommended from Harare where the two most popular psychologists Peggy Mathewman and Jenny Saunders refer many clients to her. Harare is devastated to be losing such a talented therapist. She arrives in January ! Her name is Gay Jones and she will be living near Whitestone School. I do not have her address yet. but please just phone this office as we will have both her address and phone number soon. Open to offers on all items. VEHICLE WANTED. We are looking to buy a Nissan 1400 Champ. It must be in good condition. Tel; Fred or Barbara Dare Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage !! Breaking News !! Release of a Pangolin (Manis temminckii) On Tuesday 18 November 2003 a pangolin was brought to our town office from a farm in Plumtree. A research team from Chipangali was about to leave for Hwange National Park, so they took it along with them that morning for release into the park the following day. Once released, it started digging at the base of a felled tree trunk & then buried itself into a hollow in the side of the tree, adapting itself well into its new surroundings. Pangolins look more reptile than mammal &, when curled up in a ball, appear more like an artichoke! Their upper-parts are completely encased in an armour of heavy, sharp, overlapping scales made of keratin (just like our fingernails), providing a highly effective defence against predators. They can reach an overall length of over 1 metre & weigh 5-18kg. Birth of Rudi, the Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris) Hi there everyone! I'm Rudi, a baby steenbok born only a couple of weeks ago right here at Chipangali! All I can are remember those first few days is that my legs were very wobbly. Would you like to adopt me? Not many visitors to Chipangali have seen me yet as I like to hide in the long grass. My mum used to feed me early in the morning when there was no-one else about & then hide me away again quickly. My parents are very proud of me. They've been living here at Chipangali for many years & I'm their 4th baby. Sadly my brothers & sisters all died when they were very young, but I'm here now & raring to go! In order to give me a fighting chance of survival, I now have a foster mum, Claire, who is very cool! Claire is a volunteer & has come all the way from England to look after me, since my parents freely admit they're not proving to be much good at raising us fawns. Claire on the other hand has experience in rearing antelope & we're working together very nicely already. I've already decided that when I grow up, I'm going to be a small, graceful antelope with long slender legs & a slim body. I think I'll manage this on a rich diet of easily digestable forbs & grasses, to which Claire says my stomach is adapted. Hope to see you soon. Ratty, our orphaned squirrel (Paraxerus cepapi) This adorable little creature is a 2 & a half week old tree squirrel, discovered lying on the floor in our laboratory by Zoë, our adoptions lady. At only about a week old, his eyes had not yet opened & his umbilical cord was still attached. We believe he fell from the roof, where his mother had been nesting. He sustained no injuries at all but was, & still is, entirely dependent upon a mother figure. Zoë is taking very good care of him, feeding him warm milk through a small syringe every 3 hours, day & night (Zzzzzzzzzz). He is developing into a very healthy & extremely active & cheeky little boy! In another 3 weeks or so he can be weaned off his milk & be introduced to plants & invertebrates. Once Zoë has taught him all he needs to know about life on his own in the great outdoors, Ratty will be released right here at the Orphanage, where many other tree squirrels exist. They are very sociable little creatures, foraging in small parties by day & roosting together in tree holes at night. We are hopeful that Ratty will find a friendly group to live & socialise with. Would you like to adopt Ratty to help him through these tricky, early stages? If you would like to learn more about any of these animals, or are interested in adopting Rudi, Ratty or any of our other orphans, please email Zoë Lapthorn at this address & she will be only too happy to oblige.
