VINTAGE AND CLASSIC CLUB OF MATABELELAND NEXT RUN! NEXT RUN! NEXT RUN! - OUR NEXT RUN WILL BE ON SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER The venue will be Marula Farmers Club The SPCA is organising a cycle ride to the Marula Farmers Club on that day, and we are joining them. We will not be expected to be riding bicycles all the way there, although some of us might like to join in that part of the fun. I know Neal Leach will! Any other volunteers? This is an event organised to try and raise some money for the Bulawayo branch of the SPCA. With less people and, more, FAR more cruelty perpetrated towards the helpless animals in this Country, the SPCA is REALLY struggling. To support this occasion we would like as many members as possible to come in their old cars and offer rides at a cost to be donated to the SPCA. The SPCA will be running a "beer, cool-drink (and maybe wine)". bar and will be selling hamburgers, hotdogs etc. Please support them and come along and have an enjoyable day out in the countryside. I promise you it is not a terrible road, like last run. It is fully tarred ALL the way. FOR GOODNESS SAKE, COME ALONG AND ENJOY YOURSELVES. I did a recce out there this last weekend. What a superb trip! Westacre to Figtree is an abomination. Mud huts! Deforestation! Mugabe mania all the way! Figtree is too beautiful, new green, green trees; and green grass and masses of jacarandas in full flower! Thereafter, what a pleasure all the way to Marula. I promise you, a WONDERFUL drive! All the indigenous trees bursting forth in their green spring foliage. Marula Farmers Club? Just as lovely and well kept as ever! The cyclists leave at 7.00 am. They will take between one and a half to two and a half hours to reach there. We will meet at Gary Ainscough's garage at Southwold Shopping Centre at 8.30 for 9.00 am. TO GAIL AND JOHNNY Please invite ALL Steering Wheel Club members to join us, the cyclists and the SPCA on this run. It should be most enjoyable and is also for a really good cause. Thank you PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO I'm very sorry to have to write to say that we have had no alternative but to cancel Alexander Ardakov's proposed concert at the end of the month. PAB did not initiate the tour, the idea for which emerged some time ago when a Zimbabwean who had studied with him, to use her own words, "expressed my enthusiasm to Alexander about putting music back into a country that has suffered so much. He then offered his services and when I mentioned that not much money would be involved, he said that as long as his costs were covered he was interested. It is on this basis that the plans went as far as they did." Arrangements were accordingly made and an air fare obtained as well as the promise of accommodation at the Victoria Falls Hotel and more when suddenly Mr.Ardakov asked for a fee. Although the sponsorship was given partly on the grounds that he was not receiving a fee, an offer was made to him which he countered by saying, "I have to put forward a request of £1000 paid in British pounds as a flat fee for all my performances in Zimbabwe and Zambia as a final and only acceptable for me condition. There would not be any regret or disappointment from my side if you find this condition unacceptable as I realize that your possibility is quite limited." We did indeed find the condition unacceptable and accordingly cancelled the tour. We apologise for the disappointment that this will entail but we hope that you will agree with our decision. May I take this opportunity of reminding you that the BPO will be giving a concert on SATURDAY 1 NOVEMBER in the Sibson Hall and that PAB will present FIONA MACDONALD on THURSDAY 4 DECEMBER - not the 2nd as previously suggested. Fiona will also be singing with the Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra on SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER, probably in St.John's Cathedral. Full details of these concerts nearer the time. Again, our sincere apologies for the disappointment over Ardakov's concert. National Day of Prayer for Peace in Zimbabwe The vice chairperson of the Solidarity Peace Trust, Bishop Rubin Phillip is proposing 16 November 2003 as a National Day of Prayer for Peace and Justice in Zimbabwe. This will be a national campaign in SA, when churches will focus on Zimbabwe. There was a strong feeling among activists that the campaign should be extended to include Zimbabwean churches. This morning I spoke with representatives of the Zimbabwe National Pastors Conference and the Ecumenical Support Services in Zimbabwe and was encouraged to learn that they gave 100% support to this effort and also asked that it be extended to Zambia, Botswana, Malawi , Mozambique and Swaziland. We seek your support in spreading this information to NGO's churches and church organisations to support this campaign. Should you require more information please feel free to contact Selvan Chetty of the Solidarity Peace Trust on +27 39 6825869 or Mr Jonah Gokova of the Ecumenical Support Services on +263 4 703 474.
