AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE WORKSHOP Learn the basics of aromatherapy massage and spoil your family this Christmas Sat 8 & Sun 9 November Phone Corinne (09) 286154 011 417 234 JOHN EDMOND NEW C.D. John has just released a new CD, and despite its title it is not a "When-we" refrain. I have heard it and I believe it's his best music yet .... with titles such as Just Another Tough Day In Africa, Zambezi Dreaming, Northern Boy or Southerner, Rhodesian Schooldays, Rhodie Cologne, The Bigger Scheme of Things, etc The CD's are R130 each. I shall be seeing John down in Warmbaths sometime in early/mid November, and if anyone would like me to facilitate obtaining a copy, just give me a ring on 241417 or e-mail on kameadow@mweb.co.zw To give you an idea of the "feeling" of the CD, will quote from the sleeve .... "Though of course there remains some selective amnesia that a country called Rhodesia once existed, it is a fact of historical life. And people born in that country were, ergo, Rhodesians. It was, and is, a country that has claimed many hearts, be they Rhodesians, Zimbabweans or someone who was fortunate to have simply tarried there for a while. There has been, as we all know, a fair amount of heartbreak as well ... in the before, the after and the in-between. But life goes on. It has to. And this is the theme in Friends, Rhodies, Countrymen. In his own timeless, mellifluous way the underlying message in many of John Edmond's 14 new songs urges us to remember the good times, sure, but more importantly, get on with life. It's the only one we've got. Whether you are of the age group that can still remember some of the words from the first Troopiesongs album, or were a toddler on the knee of someone who did, I believe that you will find these songs by one of Africa's finest minstrels to be as up-lifting as they are poignant." ZNSPCA On behalf of all at ZNSPCA, we once again wish to express our sincere gratitude to all those who sent contributions and messages whilst Meryl was in Hospital. You will be pleased to know that last week Meryl was presented with the Paul Harris Award, the highest non-Rotarian award which can be presented by Rotary. She is now a Paul Harris fellow. Meryl is currently attending the All Africa Human Education Summit in Cape Town. She traveled to Cape Town on Monday in order to receive a further Award from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) who have been providing logistical support to the Rescue Team through the provision of a vehicle and radio communication equipment. The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) have also thrown their weight behind the Rescue Team with the provision of a grant to enable us to procure equipment and supplies for the Team. The truly tragic reports regarding the current "free for all' taking place in Parks and Conservancies make almost unbearable reading. It is incomprehensible that such barbarism still exists. We have been forwarding reports regarding the wildlife crisis to those who are concerned with this issue. Please e-mail me if you would like to receive reports of this nature. On to the rescues. As Meryl likes to put it, as soon as she was back in action, the Team 'hit the ground running'. In the Goromonzi area another farmer was violently evicted. The invaders were headed by a retired CIO operative. A driver on the farm was severely beaten. As the farmer attempted to pack up, the invaders began helping themselves to his clothes. Before the Rescue Team arrived, 7 of the farmer's 8 geese had been taken. 13 Bantams were recovered. Two Abyssinian cats ran away during the invasion. The Team managed to rescue one and are making efforts to recover the other. The Team are looking for a safe home for the more than 50 goldfish on the farm. On Baines Hope Farm, the Team have been attending to more than 200 head of dairy cattle that have been contained in a small area without any grazing. The Team have been putting down hay bales for the animals. The Governor of Mashonaland East has approached the ZNSPCA and requested a letter describing the deteriorating condition of the cattle in order to try and gain authority for the invaders to be evicted. The Staff at the University of Zimbabwe went on strike last week, including those in charge of the livestock. The Team moved in and fed and groomed the animals which had been left without food or water. They also cleaned out all the enclosures. The Staff at the University were most unpleasant towards our Inspectors. 3 Horses, 3 Cows, 9 Goats and 9 Sheep were attended to. Meryl held meetings with the Dean, and the Chairman of Clinical Studies provided his personal assurance that even in the event of further strike action this would never happen again. Two of the horses were very aged, with very poor quality of life at the facility. Meryl gained approval for them to be euthanised. Another farmer was forced to abandon his farm in Tengwe. His pony and pets have been removed but he has abandoned his beef cattle to the 'settlers'. At Chiripiro, beyond Centenary, the Team assisted with the removal of 197 Tuli cattle - one of the top herds in the country. These cattle have been bred to cope with conditions in Zimbabwe and are very hardy. The ZNSPCA Team moved the calves but Meryl said it was quite distressing at the Sale Pens as mothers and calves called to one another. There are now probably only 3 herds of these cattle left in the country. Before the forced closure of the local independent newspaper, The Daily News, the Rescue Team were pictured on the front page of the newspaper attending to cattle which belonged to an ex-Governor of the Reserve Bank. 55 Head of cattle were found dead or dying upon the Team's arrival. The Team were tipped off by local army personnel who advised that more animals had died but they had been buried where they lay. The ZNSPCA are pressing for 55 separate counts of cruelty to be laid. The ZNSPCA have also been called in to attend to reports in Harare. A Pet Shop in South Avenue which has been the subject of numerous complaints has finally been closed down for good. The Team is still investigating reports of dog fighting which have been taking place in the suburb of Arcadia. Mainly teenagers and young adults are involved using 10 - 15 Staffies and Pit Bull X's. It is a shifting population, with animals disappearing, probably killed in fights. Meryl and Addmore called at one address where a young dog was reportedly being kept. They were advised that there were no dogs on the premises but when they checked the yard, they found the dog under an upturned shopping trolley. They uplifting the dog. Just as Meryl had sat in the driver's seat, the young male owner (19 years) arrived, pulled the driver's door open and attempted to pull Meryl out of the vehicle. She said he was obviously under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Addmore had just put the dog in the back of the rescue vehicle and immediately ran to pull the man off Meryl. The youth then ran around and climbed into the passenger seat. By this stage 5 friends arrived and the youth stood up inside the cab, opening the door and leaning out to call his friends to join him. The friends then noticed that the dog was in the back of the vehicle. Addmore jumped on the bumper and holding onto the roof, prevented them from opening the back. Meryl took off and the dog owner fell out of the open passenger door. Addmore hung on to the roof until they were clear of the group and Meryl could stop. The youngster was later arrested and charged with obstructing an SPCA Inspector. In Meryl's absence, the Team have still been engaged in rescues and on Monday found themselves and the two policemen who accompanied them barricaded onto a farm for most of the day. Simon and Addmore were subjected to verbal abuse by the 'settlers'. They were unable to negotiate for the release of the farm animals. They will have to return with more support. The day did end on a high note as they were able to rescue an old Collie, Rusty, from a farm in Mvurwi. The farmer was forced to abandon the farm and was only able to leave with 4 of his 5 dogs. He requested that the dog be euthanised. When the team arrived at the vet, two sprightly 'young' elderly ladies had heard the story and offered to give Rusty a good home. Agreement was reached with the owner and the ladies were absolutely thrilled to have Rusty. The new addition to the ZNSPCA Team, Nadia Marabini, will monitor his welfare. With the volume of reports and appeals for help being received, it is time to 'beef up' the team and take some of the pressure off Meryl. Nadia has recently been certified as an Inspector and Meryl will be engaging another trainee Inspector upon her return from Cape Town. In spite of the situation on the ground here, we were very pleased that the annual Blue Cross endurance event still took place in August. There was a slightly smaller field of participants and the added challenge of securing adequate fuel, supplies and support vehicles but it was still a great success with the stalwart South African contingent undeterred by the security situation. We commend the participants, the hardworking organisers and support teams for their commitment to supporting animal welfare in Zimbabwe. The song is called MY HOPE IS IN YOU... and some of the words go.... .....so drop your gun and go to school. Some day you will learn just how far you can go - my hope is in you. I want to watch your spirit touch the sky; if you take my love and fly away I know you will make it through - my hope is in you. Youssou is without a doubt the very best male singer to come out of the Cameroon - and his songs nearly all have a message for Africa. Pen-Picture We employ a total of 66 persons in administration, nursing, grounds and maintenance, housekeeping and security. We have been blessed these past few years by well-wishers who've supported us so faithfully through our U.K. bank account, and we've been able to import funds from there at favourable rates. However, we're now seeing our withdrawals from this account exceeding our monthly revenue. We urgently need to arrest this trend, and see an injection into the fund. Hence the appeal. After surviving his first 6 _ hours of surgery, living for a week with his chest plate open, followed by another 1 _ hours of surgery (29th Sept), during which his chest plate was closed, Tyler seems to be a very determined and strong little boy, with a lot of fight in him, as he is still fighting to be with his dad, mom, and two sisters, who are anxiously waiting for him to come home and pull their hair! Tyler is stable, but is still in ICU and will be there for some time still. He is still attached to many many tubes etc, but they are slowly decreasing in numbers, (to date they have removed 2 of them). Of the 7 medicines that he was taking, 3 have been stopped, and the ventilator has been taken down to 45%. He is still on Morphine for the pain, but the dosage has also been decreased. Tyler is only slightly sedated and so is coming to now and again, and is receiving his special lactose-free milk, through a tube. The surgeon has informed Trevor and Charmaine that where his heart tube has been placed, is very tight, now that the chest plate has been closed, and as well as keeping his blood thin, he needs to be watched extremely carefully. We feel sure that one of the main reasons Tyler survived his tremendous ordeals thus far, is because of all the prayers that are reaching the heavens for him. Thank you sincerely for all your thoughts and prayers. We are still going full steam ahead with raising the money for the balance of this first operation and the following two, which he needs to have within the next 18 months. If you have any suggestions of fund raising events, or organisation that may be able to help, etc, please could you contact us. Many heads of ideas are far better than a few. Tyler still desperately needs your prayers for his ongoing ordeals. Thank you once again for your time, thoughtfulness and greatly appreciated kindness. Best Regards SUBURBS SCAM Please could you forward a message for all suburbs residents. Africans are coming round to gates and asking if they could remove any rubble or garden refuse. Many people as yet including myself have been tricked. They generally walk round in the morning looking for potential takers. They then load late afternoon and after payment, (Z$60,000) they re- dump the rubbish where they found it. They also say that they are short of tools and ask if they could borrow 'yours' which they take with them after dumping your rubbish back where it was and running away with your garden tools. Please be careful and aware. LABOUR UNION Labour union are walking around trying to find extra bucks. Be aware that they take 40%. They are intimidating and rather rude saying they will 'Sue' and bring the white black issue into there argument. They have no legs to stand on. Don't even let you staff talk to them.
