It's so hard she has to turn the pages with her feet. She talks to Michael White I can hear the squeals of laughter halfway down the street - an otherwise sedate Edwardian boulevard off Ealing Common - and it's not entirely children, though God knows there are enough of them running amok at Tasmin Little's annual summer garden party. Like a kindergarten, there are tiny writhing bodies everywhere. And keeping order, just, with plates of sausage-rolls and baby-wipes is the exuberantly cheerful (OK, squealing) Tasmin. Housewife, mother, superstar violinist. "Isn't it fantastic! Have a sausage-roll! No, Chloe, not there . . ," and she dashes off to staunch a tear or soothe a tantrum. Indoors, two mortgageable violins - a Guadagnini and a rather famous Strad - are tucked away from prying fingers. And the only proof of Tasmin's public life, lest you forget it, fills a corner of the sitting-room: a music stand with a computer-screen that scrolls the music page by page, controlled by foot-pads. It's been built by Tasmin's husband (a recording engineer who knows about these things) as a solution to the problems of her Prom next Sunday. Tasmin's Prom will be one of the events of the season, featuring Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, and televised for BBC2 as opposed to BBC4 - which means someone will actually watch it. But more than this, she's playing the Ligeti Violin Concerto: an iconic work premiered to acclaim 10 years ago although hardly heard since, because almost no one can play it. Except Tasmin Little. "I honestly think it's the hardest concerto ever written, and you get no time to turn the pages of the music - which is why, the last time I played it, I dismembered the score and stuck the bits on two sides of a huge piece of cardboard. But it looked like a Blue Peter project gone wrong, so we're trying out this device. It's perfectly brilliant! I step on this pad to turn the page forward and this pad to turn back . . . which I hope won't be necessary in performance." Cheryl and Johnny are really doing their bit to help maintain Zimbabwe's wildlife heritage and we are sure there is someone out there who can do their bit in return and assist them find a new home to rent. They cannot pay exorbitant rental but are careful tenants and keen gardeners. If repairs need to be carried out they will do at their own expense without harassing the owner unless it is beyond their means - so they really are trouble free tenants.
