NEWS S.A. VISA REQUIREMENTS This is to inform everyone planning to travel to South Africa that a new law was passed a few weeks ago stipulating that all visitors to South Africa are required to have a minimum of two blank pages in their passport to enable the entry visa to be issued. If there is insufficient space in the passport entry will be denied and the person is likely to be detained pending return to their country of origin. Perhaps this is the time to renew those almost-full passports! I would be grateful if you could spread the word amongst the local community. All prices negotiable Queen Mary House Queen Mary House was founded in 1923 by the Loyal Womens Guild as a residence for aged ladies with no regard to politics or religion. The Home was named after the late Queen Mary (the present Queen’s grandmother) by royal consent. Today it is run by a Committee of Bulawayo ladies, on a voluntary basis, with no support from Government or local authorities. Queen Mary has always relied heavily on donations, particularly from the Commercial Farmers in Matabeleland, but due to the land takeovers, this source has since all but dried up. Expenditure just to keep the home viable, now stands at Z$1,300,000.00 per month. The ladies pay what they can but most are on fixed pensions from the British Government or from local authorities. The home is running at an extensive loss, due to rampant inflation of 400%, which is still rapidly rising. The Residents and Homes savings are exhausted and we will unfortunately have to close down by Christmas unless we are able to find some assistance. We have 30 ladies in their 80’s with nowhere to go. There is no other suitable accommodation available in Bulawayo. The home needs approximately £230.00 (or the equivalent) per month to maintain this vital welfare institute. Please pass this letter on to your local charity institutions, every little bit will count. Mr Oborne (in charge of finances) can be contacted at the above address and telephone number. Or you could e’mail (Jo Grobler on ) for any further information you may require. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated by 30 very worried old dears. Many thanks and kind regards. Which grasses do Buffalo prefer? If you are interested in learning the answers to any of the above questions then this exciting and informative week-end to be held at Hwange National Park, Main Camp, is for you. Come along and join one of the many walks and lectures planned for the week-end 12th - 14th September 2003. No visit to Hwange would be complete without a drive into the Park and apart from daytime drives, as this week-end is just after full moon, there is also the option of driving in the Park on Friday night and stopping at Nyamandhlovu Platform to experience exciting nocturnal wildlife activities. There will also be time to socialise and during the week-end there will be performances by the Main Camp Primary School Marimba and Dance group, plus the very talented conservation drama group, Ingonyama. Garnie CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARS Never again in your (or my) lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular This month and next Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August Mars will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this! No one alive today will ever see this again. SAFEGUARD YOUR CELL PHONE Something worthwhile knowing: To check your cellular phone's serial number, key in the following on your phone: star hash zero six hash as (*#06#) A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Should your phone be stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They in turn, will then be able to block your handset, so that even if the thief changes the Sim card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it, can't use/sell it either. If everybody did this, there would be no point in stealing mobile phones anymore.
