"POSTCOLONIAL IRELAND AND ZIMBABWE:
STAGNATION BEFORE CONVERGENCE"

Presentation and Q&A by: Tara McIndoe, BA(TCD) MPhil(Oxon)

All welcome.

Abstract
This paper discusses the slow and hesitant integration of two postcolonial economies into the global economy. One is Ireland, whose independence began in 1921, but which only found its place securely at the productive frontier by the 1990s, with many setbacks on the way. The other is Zimbabwe, which ceased being a colony in 1965 but achieved proper independence only in 1980. Following independence, Zimbabwe's economic performance in an increasingly globalized world was, like that of Ireland at first, hesitant and disappointing, even before its catastrophic decline in the past decade.
Zimbabwe - now reckoned one of the poorest countries in the world - seems to have stumbled through a series of disastrous economic policy errors. Yet the struggles in Zimbabwe over land ownership and the errors in trade policy, fiscal discipline and even financial policy have parallels, more or less close, with the longer and ultimately more successful history of Irish independence.

HILLSIDE DAMS CLEAN UP

Further to our cleanup request for next week please also consider bringing along a mattock/badza.

Last additional request for now...

PLEASE if you have any old drums that can be used for dustbins around the Conservancy do let us have them. Even if they are old with holes we can utilise them as central places where people can place their rubbish rather than leaving it scattered around. Actual bins with your corporate logos would be wonderful if there is anyone able to assist with these.
If you are able to help out please contact us on estate@hillsidedams .com or 242490

Copplia is the good-humoured story of Swanilda who attempts to win the love of Franz with the help of a beautiful but lifeless mechanical doll, made by Dr.Copplius whose dream it is to create one with a living soul.
Il Signor Bruschino, Rossini's ninth opera (written when he was 20!) is a one-act farce which revolves around the young lovers Florville and Sofia. Sofia's guardian has promised her to the young Bruschino but he has run up a large bill at the local inn. Florville persuades the innkeeper to lock up Bruschino until he pays his bill and intends to assume his identity and marry Sofia before the deception is discovered, but complications ensue when Bruschino senior arrives...

The second in the new series of Peter Rollason's lunchtime programmes.

Friday 29 May in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Mozart: The Magic Flute There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 10.00 p.m. Mozart's last opera in a colourful production from Glyndebourne designed by David Hockney, conducted by Bernard Haitink and with Felicity Lott and Benjamin Luxon among the cast. "What dominates John Cox's lively 1978 production of Die Zauberflöte for Glyndeboune are the sets and designs of David Hockney.... the vision is striking, with stylised scenery and landscapes in false perspective, with something of a toytown atmosphere, including a delightful dragon and oriental costumes for Sarastro's followers. That puts the production firmly on the side of pantomime rather then serious drama, but the excellent casting and the powerful conducting of Bernard Haitink ensure that this is not just a trivial entertainment. Leo Goeke as Tamino sings Dies Bildnis beautifully and the young Felicity Lott is a charming Pamina. Benjamin Luxon is a strong and positive Papageno with May Sandoz light, bright and agile as the Queen of the Night, Thomas Thomashke a well-focused Sarastro and the young Willard White is the Speaker. A memorable version." Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music

Monday 1 June at 5.15 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall
"Wagner", the second in a series of films in the BBC Great Musicians series. Other dates:Monday 6 July (Beethoven), Monday 20 July (Bach) and Monday 3 August (Tchaikovsky) .

Thursday 4 June in Room 25 at 1.10 p.m.
Lunchtime Talk: Wagner and the Ring - 2 In the second talk in the series Michael Bullivant will look at Wagner's musical methods in The Ring.

Friday 5 June in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Wagner: Das Rheingold NO supper interval. Carriages: 10.00 p.m. The prologue to 'The Ring of the Nibelung' in a spectacular production from
the Metropolitan Opera that followed Wagner's original stage directions as closely as possible with casts including the finest Wagnerian singers of the day. "In 1989 the Metropolitan Opera, celebrating the centenary of its first production of Wagner's Ring cycle, presented a new production with an American conductor in charge for the first time, James Levine. Brian Large adapted the spectacular staging by the Austrian actor-turned- producer, Otto Schenk, and added an extra dimension and sense of involvement. With lavish sets and costumes by Gunther Schneider-Siemssen, this is a full-bloodedly realistic production in the romantic tradition. For a video version there is everything to be said for this approach when the story is told so lucidly with splendid camera work. The aim was to modify the traditional approach, using all the theatrical effects available in in a modern theatre and, for example, the illusion of the Rhinemaidens swimming is very vivid at the start of Rheingold and, in the final scene of Götterdämmerung, after the Gibichung Hall has collapsed most realistically, we are briefly shown the bottom of the Rhine again and Valhalla in flames, reflecting exactly what the music tells us. Hildegard Behrens as Brünnhilde and James Morris as Wotan are both even more convincing when seen as well as heard and Siegfried Jerusalem as Siegfried makes a handsome hero." [The Penguin Guide] [The rest of "The Ring" will follow on Fridays 19 June, 3 July and 17 July]

The Academy is planning another book sale so any unwanted books and magazines will be gratefully received once the office has re-opened on Monday 4 May.

3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES

Two of Bulawayo's nicest people left the country this weekend. Clive and Tish Peatt, of Bancroft Neil fame, leave to be with family in England. We will miss you so Clive and Tish.
Nothing was ever too much trouble for either of you, never has anyone seen a sad face, even on a Monday !! You will be sorely missed and remembered with love and pride always.
All at Acol Chemical, Bancroft Neil, Perkins Seals and Stag.

I would like to send a big bunch of roses to
the Gentleman and his family who were in a white Toyota Hilux
that stopped to help me when I was being harassed by the police in Nyanyadzi on Saturday. If it had not been for him stopping and helping me I think I might still be stuck there. The policeman wanted to arrest me because according to him I was breaking the law by displaying my new number plates and the old registration number on the vehicle license disc. The police man told me that I could not move my vehicle and was being very unreasonable until this gentleman got out of his car and came and intervened.

The policeman was hoping that the two white ladies , with two children in the car would bribe him so that they could continue on to Bulawayo I think and so was really hassling me. There are about 9 road blocks between Mutare and Birchenough Bridge and this is the only one that I had any problems with. The policeman even tried to tell me that I should not have received new number plates when I did change of ownership on my car and if I tried to say anything he just shouted at me and told me I was trying to teach him how to do his job. When the gentleman stepped in he had to threaten the policeman with taking him to court before the policeman started to back down. He then told the policeman to fine me and let me go on my way and the policeman said that he could not fine me because he had no fine book. So in the end, after about half an hour, I was able to drive off without even being fined.

Thank you very much.

Candy

WARNING
PEOPLE WHO SHOP IN MUSINA PLEASE BEWARE. THE THIEVING OUT OF CARS IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH. BE EXTRA CAREFUL AROUND THE FACTORY SHOP. A VERY CLEVER GANG MANAGED TO DISTRACT ME WITH A MAN SELLING THE CUTEST MONKEYS THAT MAKE A NOISE.
THEN MY HANDBAG WAS TAKEN OUT OF MY CAR WHILE I STOOD AT THE BOOT. I NEVER SAW A THING BUT ALL THE VENDORS ON THE STREET SAW IT. THE SECURITY GUARDS AT THE FACTORY SHOP WERE ALERTED AND THEY TOLD THEIR "BOSSES" WHO CHOSE TO DO NOTHING. EVERYONE WATCHED THE MAN WALK OFF WITH MY HANDBAG UNDER HIS ARM. SOME OF WOMEN VENDORS WERE VERY HELPFUL TO ME AFTERWARDS AND TOLD ME WHAT TO DO. E.G. GO TO THE POLICE.
THEY SAID THEY ARE TOO AFRAID TO GIVE CHASE AS THESE MEN ARE ARMED WITH KNIVES. I HAD NOT THOUGHT I HAD TO GO TO THE POLICE AS A POLICEMAN WALKED PAST JUST AFTER IT HAD HAPPENED AND I ASKED HIM TO GIVE CHASE. HE SAID HE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO BUT WOULD GO FOR "BACK-UP." THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A LIE. I THEN WENT TO THE POLICE STATION AND THEY SHOWED VERY LITTLE INTEREST UNTIL THEY KNEW THE AMOUNT OF CASH THAT WAS IN THE BAG. TWO OF THE PLAIN CLOTHES ONES THEN SAID THEY WOULD LOOK INTO IT. THEY DID COME BACK LATER WITH MY PASSPORT FOR WHICH I WAS EXTREMELY GRATEFUL THEY WERE TOLD THE NAME OF THE MAN WHO DID THE DEED BUT THEY DO NOT SEEM TO WANT TO FIND HIM, MAKE A CASE OR TO PUT THESE THIEVES AWAY. ONE CAN IMAGINE WHY. THE FACTORY SHOP ALLOWS THESE GANGS TO OPERATE AROUND THEIR PREMISES AND AS LONG AS THEY DON'T COME TOO NEAR THE DOOR THEY ARE FREE TO WANDER AROUND OUTSIDE. THE MAN WHO ROBBED ME BEGGED ME TO LET HIM HELP ME WITH MY TROLLEY BUT I DECLINED. HE FOLLOWED ME ACROSS THE ROAD AND WATCHED WERE I PUT MY HANDBAG AND THEN DISAPPEARED.

THREE MINUTES LATER THE MONKEY MAN CAME ALONG. THERE MAY ALSO BE A CONNECTION WITH THE STAFF INSIDE THE STORE BECAUSE I WAS WAITING FOR MY EMPLOYEE MICHAEL TO COME AND HELP ME UNLOAD MY GOODS INTO THE BOOT FOR SECURITY REASONS. HE WAS DETAINED INSIDE BECAUSE THE SALES LADY WHO HAD JUST SERVED ME RANG UP 15 PURITY BABY FOODS INSTEAD OF 12 AND IT TOOK AGES FOR A CORRECTION TO BE DONE. SHE KNEW WE WERE TOGETHER SO SHE COULD HAVE GOT A MESSAGE TO A FRIEND TO TARGET ME WHILST DETAINING MICHAEL. THE SHOP WAS VERY QUIET THAT DAY AND SO WAS THE STREET. I GOT CARELESS AND PAID A VERY HIGH PRICE. HOWEVER I INTEND TO WARM AS MANY PEOPLE AS I CAN. IF SHOP OWNERS DO NOT WANT TO PROTECT THEIR CUSTOMERS WHO SPEND SO MUCH MONEY, THEN LETS BOYCOTT THOSE SHOPS.

SCORE IN MUSINA HAS EXCELLENT SECURITY RIGHT INTO THE PARKING LOT, SO GIVE THEM A TRY.
POLLYANNA

More than disagreeable thoughts are offered to Zesa for their total lack of concern at depriving us of power for the last nine days - and counting, creating a mind numbing existence and extensive expense and damage to equipment, food and any semblance of any normal activity. Despite what seems like a thousand expensive telephone calls to anybody connected with this inactive group for whatever information they deign to divulge, we are still without assistance or answers to the problem.
The only joined up sentence received so far has been "it might take from one week to two years to fix". How helpful. Their lack of interest or service is frustrating and deplorable.
We have heard more excuses from them than should be uttered in a lifetime. "No funds" is not acceptable when they cannot even sustain the concept of a simple administration system which actually involves meter reading or issuing of accounts to their long suffering customers to generate the funds in the first place. Do any of them ever achieve a result in any of these endless meetings they constantly seem to be in?

Duppa

I must send a huge mountain of raspberries to the "dreaded" ZESA.

Over the past 3 weeks, I have kept a record of the number of hours, we have had power cuts everyday and they are no less than 6 hours at any one time. From the 6/4/09 till 26/4/09 we had +/- 115 hours of no power in the Hillside area.

This week there is the ZITF going on and we have now had power everyday all day.

WHY????? now because Trade Fair is on..this is such a farce because next week we will be back to power cuts everyday and with no explanation at all.
We all pay our bill in Forex so surely we should now be entitled to power but we are not.

So I am afraid to say tons and tons of raspberries to ZESA for not providing us with the service we pay for and for being so rude when you eventually manage to get through to them to ask how long the cuts are going to be.
Love the Morning Mirror and cant wait to get it each week so a huge bouquet of Roses to you.
Regards
Audrey Rademeyer

7) BULAWAYO NEWS

St Francis Home

St Francis is a Home for profoundly physically & mentally handicapped children, aged from 5 - 16 years, & it is the only one of its kind in Zimbabwe. It comes under the umbrella of Ingutsheni, which is a hospital for mentally disturbed adults, but it is separate, for children only. Once the children reach 16 they have to leave, either to their parents if they have any, to Ingutsheni or to an Annexe attached to St Francis.
Due to the economic challenges facing Zimbabwe the Home can only cope with half the number they started out with in 1958.Last year alone 12 children died there from malnutrition. This Home for children, who are mostly abandoned, bedridden or wheelchair bound, gets NO funding from Govt. at all, & it is totally reliant upon donations. It finds itself in a desperate position from a financial perspective & it is only through the auspices of the Lions & a few church groups that they get food donations.

They have half a dozen wheel chairs which need attention to get them working again, & wood/coal on a regular basis to get a stove functioning. . the only other stove is electric & looks as though it is on its last legs. They desperately need plastic plates & plastic mugs, as well as cups with spouts ie like the non-spill cups used by toddlers. Second hand in good condition is quite acceptable.
I don't think they have a single sheet in the Home & very few pillow cases. These beds need to be changed so often & the children are lying on plastic mattress covers: their blankets/towels are old & worn. Please, is there is anyone out there who is a D.I.Y guy or a Mr Fixit, who could try & sort out the wheelchairs, using parts from one of the others if need be ? The Home has little or no money so this would have to be a labour of love! And if you have any linen/mosquito nets to spare (some of the beds are cot size, the rest mainly single bed size) or clothes (winter is on its way), plastic plates/cups the Home would be so grateful. Any assistance, financial or otherwise, would be so appreciated & go a long way to easing the hardships faced by these deprived & handicapped children & their care-givers.

Please feel free to contact me on colvale@gatorzw. co.uk or 011 213 320. Landline 241957. Many thanks, Val Kendall

FISHING NEWS
Well as you all know by now that Sparkies tackle has moved to the Bradfield complex a few doors from the Butcher shop, Talking about the Butcher shop, Go in and try the Braai short ribs they are well priced and great on the braai the best to take fishing.
The Bream are slowly going off the Bite as the cold starts moving in, Shashani is still the best place for Bream at the moment to contact the Shashani management Phone Belinda on 241723 or 0912261092 and soon you can call in and see Steve at his new shop called FRONT LINE 14th ave around the corner from Mat Tyres.
The bass Fishing will continue though winter, just remember to catch bass in winter you must slow your retrieve down, so if you think you fishing slow, then cut that in half again, Carp fishing at Khami has not been that good at all, Vic Ireland who goes there so often, he's starting to look like a Carp and his wife like a mermaid, has not caught a Carp for some months, maybe he has lost the plot, but as he said if you don't see the local guys fishing around the dam, then don't waist your time, those guy's know something we don't. Inyankuni Dam has had very little inflow with the past rains, it is at about 19% full same with Umzingwani dam only 16% full, while the other dams are full, WHY? I don't Know. Bass fishing at Mananda Dam is still good, Spinner Bait been the top bait, Boat Launching is tuff, I strongly recommend 4X4, Because the dam level is dropping there is lots of mud, Steve and Mathew Lee went out on Sunday and managed to get stuck and they were in a 4X4, and they managed to damage a rim and tyre on the trip, so you must take it easy.
With the Winter comp on its way and the old folks outing, I will be sending updates to you.
Regards
Neville Ford.

PROPERTY INVESTMENT IN AUSTRALIA

Craig & Karin Bailey (formerly from Bulawayo), have been involved in property investment in Australia with Brisbane-based company, Wealth Acceleration Group (WAG), since 2002. They found property to be such a great investment vehicle that they recently opened a Toowoomba branch of Wealth Acceleration Group so that they too can offer WAG's hugely successful wealth creation strategies to people locally, throughout Australia, and to investors in southern Africa.

- Did you know that unlike the USA & the UK, Australia currently has a shortage of 200 000 homes? Therefore due to basic economics, there is a huge demand for property in Australia that will continue to push prices up. As a result property experts expect properties to boom in 2010 and 2011.

- Did you know that houses in Australia have doubled in value every 7-10 years for the past 100 years. Through wars, wage concerns, the oil crisis of the 1970s, capital gains tax, high interest rates, low inflation and the introduction of GST - all arguments against properties increasing in value over the past 5 decades - properties doubled in value every 10 years.
- Above that, real data figures from 1978 in Brisbane show an average annual growth rate of 10%. And this growth compounds each year.
We work on the basis of LEVERAGE - holding as much appreciating asset with as little money as possible -, COMPOUND and TIME. We also manage your cash flow to ensure that you have the money needed to pay your bills on your property. And we give investors advice and back up service.
If you are interested in investing in property in Australia, whether you're in Australia or in southern Africa, contact us and we'll give you the information that you need to start investing. Our website is also filled with excellent information.

Investors outside Australia:
- Did you know that property investment helps toward your immigration requirements for Australia? - We can get you a 70% loan with Australian banks. - We have a way to structure 2 properties for you in such a way that they cost you nothing! Too good to be true? Contact me and I'll tell you how. - If you don't have a lot of capital, you can do a joint venture with 12% returns.

TUITION ( MATHS, PHYSICS, AND CHEMISTRY) AND IT CONSULTANCY

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help. Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution.
I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.

Car wanted to Hire

Ex Zimbo lady driver with clean record, I am visiting Bulawayo for a week at the beginning of August 2009. I'd like to rent a decent second-hand car for about 5 days for reasonable price payable in £ or R per day, plus will pay for own petrol, if you can supply me a full tank. It will be locked behind gates each night. However I will only pay for 'hire' of vehicle and not for any repairs, unless I am unfortunate enough to be in an accident. i.e. the vehicle should be in reasonable running condition as I will not take responsibility for it overheating, breaking down etc. Payment on pickup.
Please email me ronstern53@yahoo. co.uk with your details.

Hello -

It was interesting to read about the work being done to help Coghlan School, and well done to all those involved!
I remember doing my second year teaching practice there while I was training at TTC - Hmm!....38 years ago now !!!
The Headmistress was Miss Edna Armstrong and she ruled the School with a rod of iron! I later met up with her again through a teaching friend, and thought you might be interested to know that she is still living in Harare with another retired teacher! Edna turned 90 last year! She broke her hip about three years ago and manages with a walking aid now. An amazing lady who I have enjoyed getting to know again in her latter years!

Sadly since I move to Bulawayo 20 months ago, I have not had the opportunity to visit her and Pat, though I have email contact. They live alone in Mabelreign and have no phone anymore since the lines were stolen...

Just thought you might be interested. I will tell her of your endeavours and am sure she will be delighted to hear Coghlan is still going well.

Yours sincerely

14) SEEKING FRIENDS

Thank you so much for always faithfully sending news from home. Please help me search for friends and family.

From Mashaba:

Hewitt, Ronnie and Dave and their 3 daughters Alison, Susan and Michelle. Alison married Petros Erasmus and I saw her last in Bulawayo in the 90's Fraser, Hugh and Rose and their 4 daughters, Dianne, Sharon, Cynthia and Ruth. They moved from Mashaba to SA in the late 70's
From Bulawayo:
Brown, Rhona and Sons, Shane and Gavin, his wife Fiona and daughter Stephanie. I found Gavin and Fiona last year through your news letter, but the number I have for them has stopped working.
Peters, Francene and son Matthew. I last saw Francene in the mid 90's before I left Byo
