A BRING-and-buy afternoon will help people in desperate need in Zimbabwe. Organisers have appealed for donations including home made cakes, biscuits, pies, jams and pickles, and books and unwanted gifts to sell at Shrubs Farm, Lamarsh, between 1.30pm and 5pm today.
"If you have nothing to bring, please come and support us anyway," said Sara Erith, one of the organisers.
Money raised will go towards buying tanks and guttering to collect drinking water, caring for destitute elderly people, and buying seeds for planting.
The proceeds of the sale will be taken to Africa by a couple who have worked for two Zimbabwe charities so there will be no administrative costs."
A handful of caring people made over three thousand pounds for the elderly and destitute in Zimbabwe. God bless you for caring about us Sara and Robert Erith and Flora and Crispin Eley and thank you so much from all at home in Zimbabwe.

1) PETRIA PONDERINGS COMMENTS

You've brought back so many memories of the Centenary Park, what a great place it was. One in particular was a Christmas time when Brett and Mandy were about 2 or 3. We were doing the Christmas evening walk through the park with the whole family and Brett said 'look at the candle Mandy'. We so often repeat it when we see a candle burning, funny how things stick. I wonder if the Museum is still there at the other end of the Park. I have forwarded the Mirror to Jean Ovenden whose husband John used to drive the train for Round Table, something he was very proud of. John died suddenly just before Christmas. He was a big, loud guy (he wore a hearing aid) but we miss him so much.

Thanks for this. It brought back memories of my early years in Bulawayo and going to the Rhodes Centenary Exhibition. We went to see several shows in the Theatre Royal including one with Sir Harry Lauder and I can't remember the others. I also stood with a flag as a member of Baines Junior School. If the fountain in the article is the one I think it is then it was added many years later and the interesting thing about it, to me, is that my dad was the bricklayer in charge of its construction. Whenever we used to visit the folks ( as we were in Umtali by then ) he would always take his granddaughters to the park to see " his " fountain. Happy days!!!!!

The London Concerts

Michael Bullivant will talk about the background to the two concerts to be held in London on 30 April and 6 May to raise funds for the Academy and also play some of the music that will be heard at them. [The Academy hopes to show DVD recordings of both concerts in early June.]

In these uncertain economic times, we are sure you would welcome all the help you could get and therefore the Bulawayo Publicity Association appeals to you to let us help you by publicising your products, developments and diversifications, but you need to assist by giving us this information.
For Example:
Building of extensions onto the present Cresta Churchill Hotel has restarted and plans include 50 additional bedrooms, a 400 seater conference room, a small gym and internet facilities.

The Amalinda Collection has taken over the Bulawayo Club and renovated and refurbished it to a Boutique Hotel standard, of which there is a chain in South Africa of these small, but luxuriously appointed hotels. Accommodation in 17 rooms will include a continental breakfast. The hotel can cater for weddings, conferences and seminars and facilities include a business centre.

The restaurant at the Hillside Dams has now started serving meals during weekends, Friday to Sunday with entrance fees being R10 per driver and R5 for each individual visitor during this period.

Zimbabwe International Trade Fair celebrates its 50th Golden Anniversary this year, the show dates being 28 April to 2nd May. A special edition Catalogue is to be printed giving the history of the Fair and listing all the participants from 1960 onwards. Entertainment - The Chairman of the Bulawayo Performing Arts, Mr Michael Bullivant, organizes weekly lunch time or 5.30 pm lectures mostly on a musical note, as well as regular DVD shows of opera and ballet, apart from the visit of overseas musicians. The Drakensburg Choir will be coming to Bulawayo in March. For those of you more interested in traditional drama and music, there are weekly performances at Amakhosi Theatre which is situated on Bash Street, Old Falls Road. Many of the performers have been acclaimed internationally.

Commerce - ZNCC, CZI and ABUZ are combining forces to make representations shortly to the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Professor Welshman Ncube, to have the outrageously high utility charges re-assessed in order for commerce and industry to survive. ZNCC has already had a meeting with heads of City Council departments to place before them the concerns of members in connection with their very high charges.

Keano is now ready to be discharged from Milton Keynes hospital where he has been with his Mom since before Xmas, in addition to spending a few months at Leicester ICU. Keano and his Mom don't qualify yet for any social services assistance in the UK so are unable to rely on the local council for accommodation. Whilst there are family and friends who have offered accommodation, all of these have young children. Keano is very susceptible to picking up infections and the risk of this increases when he is contact with young children. His doctors have therefore advised that he should be kept in a quarantine - type situation as far as possible. Milton Keynes hospital is prepared to continue treating Keano as an outpatient. The doctors at Milton Keynes have become very familiar with Keano and his condition. It therefore makes sense to keep Keano close to the hospital. We are therefore appealing for assistance from anyone in the Milton Keynes area without children and who has room for two. The expectation is that this will be only a temporary arrangement. TelOne accounts

E-mails claiming that I advised people last week to not pay their TelOne accounts are nearly accurate, but my actual advice was to protest against the charges and my hope was that we would all become actively involved in protesting against the unfair demands being made by Zesa and the municipal offices as well as TelOne. I do not recall saying "Don't pay", but I do recall agreeing with a questioner that a token payment of a more reasonable figure might help avoid disconnections.

I also remember making the point that these organizations are also hoping to pay their staff in foreign currency and they were burdened by heavy maintenance as well as capital expenditure needs. However, we, the buyers of their services, could not be expected to pay as much as they needed to build new exchanges, power stations or water treatment works.

With assistance from one very concerned citizen, I have gleaned the following points that you might be able to use if you wish to throw your weight behind the protest. I have concentrated on TelOne in these observations, but perhaps the identical claims can be made about Zesa accounts. The city councils might remain a challenge, but I would be glad to hear your thoughts!

Some TelOne accounts have been charged out at a rate of US$0,30 per unit. Section 6(5) of Statutory Instrument 6 of 2009 prohibits any increase in prices when converting from the old to new currency to a level in excess of the prices that applied on the 1st February 2009. This restriction also applies to the conversion of prices to US dollars.

Dear all interested
There have been numerous enquiries on several forums as well as direct to ourselves, regarding the current position relating to Domestic wages, so have prepared this response thereto.

The terms and conditions pertaining to the employment of Domestic Workers are governed by the Labour Act (Chapter 28.01), which is administered by the (now) Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.
Wage negotiations are conducted between the Domestic & Allied Workers Union and the Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe(EMCOZ) . (Note: there is no employer representative on EMCOZ)
Once wages have been agreed, the proposals are submitted to Ministry of Labour for ratification (or amendment), and then gazetted - only then becoming law.
The last agreement on minimum wages (note: not gazetted, hence not law) was in October 2008. These were:- Gardener-USD50. 00, Cook-$52.00; ChildMinder- $54.00.
Regarding the last gazetted minimum wages - let's not even concern ourselves with those, as it was so long back, and then were a mockery.
The current situation is that 'intermittent discussions' have taken place, with a minimum wage of USD150.00, plus allowances, being indicated. And even if, and when, there is an agreement, who can say how long it will take for such to be ratified and eventually gazetted.

Quo Vadis
An employer has to decide, or better, reach a negotiated agreement with one's employee as to an equitable, or affordable, remuneration.

NOTE:
Labour Act requirements - this is important to take not of and advisable to put into effect. The Act requires that there is to be a written Contract of Employment between employer and employee.!! The purpose being that of protecting both parties in the event of a dispute/s.
It is never too late to put in place this requirement.
Trust the foregoing clarifies the main issues in people's minds.

Having had a more than trying year we thought we might just ease ourselves into 2009 without any further calamities. However, on 30 Dec one of our Tropica employees became seriously ill and has to have a blood transfusion. He needs four units of blood and each unit costs $US130.
In order to raise the money to pay for the transfusion we have taken out our very biggest and best plants for sale. We have beautiful Bamboo and Cataractum palms and have found a large Cycas Revoluta.
