South African Embassy

I have been advised that the Embassy will be coming down on the 9th and 10th of Feb. I am kindly asking you to advertise the visit for us in your paper. They will be at the Linkfest Offices, Centenary Park, same as last visit.

The next meeting of the Bulawayo Floral Group will take place at the Church of Ascension hall on Wednesday 4th February 2009 at 2.30pm.

Guest demonstrator will be Rosemary Micklesfield who will show us "Some of my favourite things."

Exhibitors titles are : "Hopeful New Year" and/or "The Rains Came" (foliage arrangement.

Entrance by donation - pensioners free. Tea and coffee will be served.

BRIDGE LESSONS

The Bulawayo Bridge Club is offering Bridge lessons for beginners, provided that there is enough interest.

12 lessons, each of two hours, are proposed. These would be run at the Bridge Club, 77 Cecil Avenue, on a Tuesday afternoon or a Saturday morning. The cost is 250 Rands per person, and this includes a Bidding Manual and 6 months membership of the Club. You don't need to come with a partner, and you don't need any previous knowledge of Bridge. Familiarity with other card games is a definite advantage, but not essential.

After some delays we are delighted to announce that the old tearoom at Hillside Dams (off Banff Road) has been reopened for business. Initially the HILLSIDE DAMS TEAROOM AND RESTAURANT will open on Saturdays and Sundays, 10h00 to 16h00. Other times and days by arrangement with Gary Timm who is at the restaurant or can be emailed on the timmgj@yahoo. com Failing that please contact Thelma on 885333.

What is a Symphony?
Thursday 5 February in Room 25 at 1.10 p.m.
The second in a series of lunchtime talks tracing the development of the symphony from its modest beginnings in eighteenth century Italy through its growth into the highest form of instrumental music. This second talk will concentrate on Haydn and Mozart.

A Midsummer Night's Dream [Ballet]
Friday 6 February in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. There will be a supper interval.
Balanchine's classic ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream to music by Mendelssohn who was born 200 years ago on 3 November 1809 is "the summery counterpart to the Christmassy Nutcracker". Alexandra Ferri (Juliet in Romeo and Juliet last August) dances Titania in a production recorded at La Scala, Milan in February 2007.

ORCHESTRA! - 2: Woodwind and Lower Strings
Monday 9 February in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m.
The second in the BBC series dubbed "the essential guide to the symphony orchestra" with Dudley Moore and Sir Georg Solti. Each family of instruments is introduced and demonstrated by an outstanding orchestra of young musicians. Part 3 (brass and percussion) is on 23 February, then 9 March (the piano) and 23 March (the conductor) - all at 5.15.

A cynic is reputed to have said that the only reason people make New Year Resolutions is so that they have something to give up for Lent ...

Why not start a " RESOLUTION REVOLUTION " with everyone making , and keeping for ever , the same one ? I WILL BE KIND TO ALL ANIMALS .

It is with regret that the SPCA reports some recent cases of cruelty to dogs , cruelty caused by FIREWORKS apparently set off by bored schoolchildren .
An injured and terrified German Shepherd dog was brought to the SPCA KENNELS from Coghlan Avenue , Kumalo after it had damaged a tendon while trying to scratch its way into the house in order to escape the noise from fireworks .
In a tragic case , 3 out of 4 Great Dane puppies died of shock after being exposed to a nearby display of fireworks .
Following a report by a concerned neighbour , an SPCA Inspector went to a house in Barham Green .
A mongrel bitch and her puppies had been traumatised by the continuous noise from fireworks down the road . The owner was away at work so they desperately sought shelter in a cottage on the premises . The cottage occupants , however , kept beating the animals to prevent them from coming inside , which is when the SPCA was called in .
The " bright sparks " ( pun intended ) who seem to have " money to burn " ( another pun ! ) , do not know that it is AGAINST THE MUNICIPAL BYE - LAWS TO LET OFF FIREWORKS IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA .
Be a CONSCIENTIOUS CITIZEN ........... report to the SPCA anyone who recklessly uses fireworks and , in so doing , CAUSES DISTRESS TO ANIMALS . KEEP THESE DETAILS HANDY :

She gave birth to a son, Charles BARTLETT, at Lady Rodwell Maternity Hospital, Bulawayo in July 1956, and was residing at 11 Munda Drive, Burnside, Bulawayo. Charles's Birth Certificate states that she was an Australian citizen. He has presumed she was born between the years 1937 - 1940.

He desperately wants to obtain a copy of her Australian Birth Certificate, so as to apply for Australian Citizenship for himself.

It is not known if she is still living.

By chance i came on your homepage and saw the pictures of the Gwai River Hotel.
It is very sad. Last time i was there was spending new years celebration 1975 / 76 and staying there overnight. Between 1966 and 1978 we were visiting Rhodesia at least once a year, staying with our good friends CRIS and VALERIE VAN WYK on Karna Block huge farm near Halfway House. We lost contact to them log ago. I know they left Karna Block to move to a farm near Bulawayo. Do you perhaps know them ?

I wish all the very best for your country and would love to visit once more and see the old places. May God put a stop to what is going on there soon !!
