Finish: 10.00 p.m. A repeat showing by popular demand(!) of Tchaikovsky' s famous ballet in a sumptuous production by Marina Gielgud for the Australian Ballet Company with Christine Walsh as Aurora and David Ashmole as Prince Florimund.

Thursday 22 January - What is a Symphony?
Room 25 at 1.10 p.m. The first in a series of lunchtime talks in which Michael Bullivant will trace the development of the symphony from its modest beginnings in eighteenth century Italy to its growth into the highest form of instrumental music in the hands of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and on through the nineteenth century.

Friday 23 January - Verdi: Il Trovatore
Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Finish: 10.15 p.m. "Domingo joined the production only at the last moment and so ensured that this 1978 Trovatore was ideally cast with Karajan returning to the Vienna State Opera to conduct an undoubtedly great performance. How lucky we are that the cameras were there and that the staging was traditional, with no silly quirks, indeed nothing to mar an evening of glorious singing, with Piero Cappuccilli in first-class voice as de Luna matching his troubadour adversary. As for Florenza Cossotto's Azucena, it is surely unsurpassable in our own time whilst Raina Kabaivanska [seen as Tosca in September!] is dramatically very convincing as Leonora and José van Damm is there too to sing one of Verdi's very finest arias at the opening of the opera." Monday 26 January - Orchestra! - 1: Introduction and Upper Strings
Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. Dudley Moore joins Sir Georg Solti in the BBC series dubbed "the essential guide to the symphony orchestra". Each family of instruments is introduced and demonstrated by an outstanding orchestra of young musicians whilst later programmes feature the piano and the conductor. Part 2 (woodwind and lower strings) is on 9 February, thereafter 23 February (brass and percussion), 9 March (the piano) and 23 March (the conductor) - all at 5.15.

Finish: 10.00 p.m. Balanchine's classic ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream to music by Mendelssohn who was born 200 years ago on 3 November 1809 is "the summery counterpart to the Christmassy Nutcracker". Alexandra Ferri (Juliet in Romeo and Juliet last August) dances Titania in a production recorded at La Scala, Milan in February 2007.

Firstly, thanks for the website. You have so many evocative photos that really mean something to me.
My dad was curator of the Bulawayo Museum, I went to Falcon College, we lived in Bulawayo and many weekends were spent exploring caves and special environments in the Matopos, and there are not many people who understand the bush enough to talk with confidence about "the stark beauty of the dry season". My brother and I used to train at the Borrow Street Baths. Before he joined the National Museums, my dad was Chief Conservator of Forests for Matabeleland. We therefore visited Gwaai and Gwampa fairly regularly and also traveled often right up to the Falls studying the "teak" forests.
I won't bore you with any more excited observations, but most of your photos identify familiar places, through I never went to Gona re Zhou.
Secondly, you have my full admiration that you are still there !

Hillside Dams Conservancy is charging entry fees for access via Banff Road entrance. Currently this applies over weekends, public holidays and some late afternoons. It will go some way to recouping ever increasing costs. Entry off Impala Road remains free at all times at present. Fishing is limited to Upper Dam ONLY and is subject to a daily fee. This applies to everyone fishing.

Current rates are the ZIM $ daily equivalent of R10 per car and an additional R5 person or pedestrian. Children below 12 years and all pensioners free. Those with friends or membership cards have all free access but please show proof. PLEASE get a receipt - payment for car and payment for persons (total) should be separate. Fishing payable at office or to the volunteer wardens who patrol the shoreline. We would appreciate donations for use at other times. Please see the office.

Please remember that this is above all else a NATURE CONSERVANCY and we request that you respect the rules and the rights of others - both fellow users and neighbours. ALL MUSIC is banned and alcohol consumption is restricted and may have to be banned outright as some patrons have forced us to take these decisions. Right of entry is reserved and should these rules be breached you may be asked to leave, while the ZRP plain cloths officers who come around the "Dams" may decide to take the matter further.

Thank you to the wonderful people of Bulawayo for all the goods which have been donated. Please keep bringing all your unwanted goods. All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewelry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. The fireworks season is with us again, PLEASE consider all animals before letting off fireworks. Most animals are terrified of the loud bangs and if you must have fireworks ensure that your own and your neighbours animals are safely locked indoors while you let them off.

Barrie John and Clive Frederick Duckworth born 27 May 1947 at the Lady Rodwell. Frederick Seaforth and Penny Duckworth born 1912 (!!) at Irisvale Ranch, Mbalabala. Fred (now Deceased) was Father to Barrie and Clive. Not exactly Bulawayo, but not far off!!
Robyn and Lyndsay Cumming 1st February, 1983/4 at the Lady Rodwell.
Together with the Stanton twins, (1980) this makes a set of twins in ALL the farming families in Mbalabala. The Mothers claimed it was the water in the Umzingwane, but the Fathers claimed unusual prowess!

Hello MM - Another stirring of the ancient memory. Cecil and Mervyn Harris. Circa 1928 Does Bulawayo hold the world record for the number of twins per capita.
Over ten years ago a lady came to live in Bulawayo from overseas. She commented about the number of twins there are in Bulawayo. Is there anyway we can find out how many pairs of twins were born in Bulawayo from a certain date. I know of a pair of twins living in Canada who are about 90, who were born here.

Having had a more than trying year we thought we might just ease ourselves into 2009 without any further calamities. However, on 30 Dec one of our Tropica employees became seriously ill and has to have a blood transfusion. He needs four units of blood and each unit costs $US130.
In order to raise the money to pay for the transfusion we have taken out our very biggest and best plants for sale.
We have beautiful Bamboo and Cataractum palms and have found a large Cycas Revoluta. The nursery is open during normal working hours but you are more than welcome to phone at any time and we will be only too happy to open up the gates.
