PAB and the Academy - Puccini: La Boh me
Tuesday 23 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
There will be a supper interval.
The Puccini series ends with "La Boh me" on the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth on 23 December 1858 - and, as the first two acts of the opera are set on Christmas Eve, it is even more appropriate to show it at this time! Based on Zeffirelli's spectacular production from La Scala Milan, this DVD version is conducted by Herbert von Karajan, "second to none as a Puccini interpreter, pointing the great emotional climaxes unerringly", and features "Mirella Freni as a meltingly beautiful Mimi and the underrated Gianni Raimondi as a forthright Rodolfo with a ringing, unrestrained tenor". [The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music]

PAB and the Academy - Rossini: Il Viaggio a Reims
Friday 9 January in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. "Alain Maratrat's highly original and clever production of Il Viaggio a Reims [The Journey to Rheims], developed over several seasons by the Th ātre du Chatelet and the Mariinsky Theatre, took both venues by storm. A radiant Valery Gergiev whips up a cast of brilliant young singers from the Academy of the Mariinsky Theatre to unbelievable heights in a colourful and witty rendering that reinvigorates Rossini's last Italian opera. This vigorous celebration of music and singing almost bursts from the screen, as fresh as when it was premiered in Paris in 1825."

PAB and the Academy - ORCHESTRA! (12 January)
Monday 12 January at 5.15 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall
Dudley Moore joins Sir Georg Solti in the BBC series dubbed "the essential guide to the symphony orchestra". Each family of instruments is introduced and demonstrated by an outstanding orchestra of young musicians whilst later programmes feature the piano and the conductor. Part 1 is an introduction to the series and then concentrates on the upper strings. Thereafter 26 January (woodwind and lower strings, 9 February (brass and percussion), 23 February (the piano) and 9 March (the conductor) - all at 5.15.

PAB and the Academy - What is a Symphony?
Thursday 15 January in Room 25 at 1.10 p.m.
The first in a series of lunchtime talks in which Michael Bullivant will trace the development of the symphony from its modest beginnings in eighteenth century Italy to its growth into the highest form of instrumental music in the hands of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and on into the twentieth century.

A repeat showing of Tchaikovsky: The Sleeping Beauty
Friday 16 January at 6.30 p.m. [There will be a supper interval] Tchaikovsky' s famous ballet is presented in a sumptuous production by Maina Gielgud for the Australian Ballet Company with Christine Walsh as Aurora and David Ashmole as Prince Florimund. The choreography is based on Petipa's original, as reproduced by Monica Parker from the surviving notation, with additions by Maina Gielgud herself who said the result was "as close to the Petipa original as it is possible to be a century after its St.Petersburg premi re". The lavish designs and costumes drew on French rococo style and the sets were of such grand proportions that the Sydney Opera House stage was unable to accommodate them so initial performances had to take place elsewhere!

Thursday 22 January in Room 25 at 1.10 p.m.
The first in the new series of Peter Rollason's lunchtime talks. PAB and the Academy - Verdi: Il Trovatore Tuesday, 23 January in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. "Domingo joined the production only at the last moment and so ensured that this 1978 Trovatore was ideally cast with Karajan returning to the Vienna State Opera to conduct an undoubtedly great performance. How lucky we are that the cameras were there and that the staging was traditional, with no silly quirks, indeed nothing to mar an evening of glorious singing, with Piero Cappuccilli in first-class voice as de Luna matching his troubadour adversary. As for Florenza Cossotto's Azucena, it is surely unsurpassable in our own time whilst Raina Kabaivanska [seen as Tosca in September!] is dramatically very convincing as Leonora and Jos van Damm is there too to sing one of Verdi's very finest arias at the opening of the opera." PAB and the Academy - A Midsummer Night's Dream [Ballet with music by Mendelssohn]
Tuesday, 6 February in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. There will be a supper interval.
Mendelssohn was born 200 years ago on 3 November 1809 so the first ballet of the year is Balanchine's classic Midsummer Night's Dream, "the summery counterpart to the Christmassy Nutcracker". Alexandra Ferri - Juliet in Romeo and Juliet in August - dances Titania in a production recorded at La Scala, Milan in February 2007.
