PAB and the Academy - Karajan conducts Richard Strauss
Monday 15 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. Admission by donation
The last of the series features "An Alpine Symphony" which was Strauss's last and longest symphonic poem. On one level it is a fifty-minute depiction of the ascent of an Alpine peak, at another an allegory of life scored with immense resource for an orchestra of over 120 players.

PAB and the Academy - A Christmas Carol: Ballet
Friday 19 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 8.00 p.m.
"A Christmas Carol", premiered by the Northern Ballet Theatre in 1992 and described as "an opulent mixture of ballet, musical and theatre", is closely based on Dickens' story and has a score by Carl Davis that incorporates many well-known carols. The production toured Britain, meeting with great success, and was even presented in China. The reviews were full of praise with the Guardian writing of "unassailable magic, the heartstrings are truly plucked" whilst the Daily Express recommended the ballet as "perfect Christmas entertainment" . There will be a supper interval from 6.30, i.e. BEFORE the performance but after the "Planet Earth" DVDs.

PAB and the Academy - Puccini: La Boh me
Tuesday 23 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. There will be a supper interval.
The Puccini series ends with "La Boh me" on the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth on 23 December 1858 - and, as the first two acts of the opera are set on Christmas Eve, it is even more appropriate to show it at this time! Based on Zeffirelli's spectacular production from La Scala Milan, this DVD version is conducted by Herbert von Karajan, "second to none as a Puccini interpreter, pointing the great emotional climaxes unerringly", and features "Mirella Freni as a meltingly beautiful Mimi and the underrated Gianni Raimondi as a forthright Rodolfo with a ringing, unrestrained tenor". Cholera Outbreak - What can you do to help?

I expect you've heard a lot about cholera in the past few weeks and you may now feel comfortable about how to protect yourself and your family, but I would like to encourage you to please reach out and help to protect others.

You may wonder how to do this, and here are a few simple ideas:

1. Familiarise yourself with the information out there so that you can pass it on. Dispel myths - cholera IS a curable, preventable and treatable disease.
2. Spread the word - tell everyone you know (eg your domestic workers, your elderly parents, shopkeepers, people you stand next to in queues etc) about cholera and how to protect themselves.
3. Practical help is always appreciated -
For example, if you have the resources:
To help prevent cholera - make sure the people you work closely with (eg your domestic workers, factory workers) have some soap and the resources to boil water, To help with treatment - make up sachets (using small sandwich bags) for sugar and salt solution using six teaspoons sugar and half a teaspoon of salt. Distribute these sachets far and wide among people with whom you come into contact in many situations eg the vendor selling tomatoes at your street corner. Tell them that they can take these home and this can then be added to 750ml boiled water and given to a cholera patient to help with rehydration treatment, if they or their neighbours need it. You could carry these sachets in your handbag or car to give out when needed. By doing this, you could save a life - how wonderful is that!
Collect and thoroughly wash old 750ml cold drink bottles and distribute them where you deem necessary for people to make up their own solutions.
If you suspect someone to have cholera or are in any way concerned about someones diarrhoea get them to any of the hospitals, Mater Dei, UBH or Mpilo asap as they have cholera units operating now. Many local clinics also now have a cholera unit and they and the hospitals will deal with the patients and if necessary will send them to Thorngrove Isolation Hospital. ( remember to give them the rehydration fluid on route to the hospital where possible )
4. Any retired nurses and doctors out there, we would love to have your names to contact in case of a large outbreak in Bulawayo.

NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2008

Well, it is that time of year again; bring out the Christmas tree and decorations - time of feasting and being merry with your loved ones - NOT IN ZIMBABWE! There is no sign of Christmas here: no decorations, no carols, no medications and no food. There seems to be no light at the end of this tunnel, BUT, due to wonderful people like yourselves, we have managed to make a difference, and we can continue to do so only with your help. So please remember these old folk especially at this time of year!

One of our biggest hurdles has been the currency; we are now talking every day terms of quadrillions and quintillions, terms which many of you have never even heard of before - imagine how the elderly struggle... Everything is reverting to either US$ or Rand, so all the food and medicines are in forex now, even the ambulance, glasses, dentistry and hospitalization. Doctors refuse to see patients unless they pay up front, no matter what medical aid they are on, and normally the fee is in forex. Our Ministry of Health has collapsed, and even our private hospitals are battling to remain open. On top of this we now have the threat of cholera hanging over us! Everything is going up in real terms, as you will see in the reports below.

MEDICINES
At the middle of November we had a total of 187 pensioners on our prescription medicine list, by the end of November this had grown to 263 - an increase of 76 pensioners within 2 weeks! The cost of these medicines per month for 263 pensioners is R52 600. Beryl is now working full time solely on the medical side, which is an enormous task, and I congratulate her on her dedication! We are unable to source the majority of medicines in Zimbabwe so are looking outside of the country. Thanks have to go to Edmund de Beer and his team from Tzaneen who assist us with non-prescription and essential drugs, without them we would not have been able to supply our elderly. We use this donation to fill the gap until the pensioner is in the system. Thanks also to Hannes Snyman and his team, Castle Ridge Pharmacy, Pretoria, who has come on board by opening an account for us and who will supply our medicines at cost. He has already supplied R30 000 worth of meds without us having a cent in the account - thank you for your trust. Anyone wanting to help with medications may make a donation to the medical account (details below).

Here in Zimbabwe, we have another chemist assisting as the numbers increase: thanks to Chris and Mr Cooper of Highfield Chemist for their efficient handling of medications and for going out of their way to source the needed meds when we have none. Thank you to Peter Rollason and Beatrice of Hillside pharmacy for their continued support.

OTHER MEDICAL
Our clinics run by Dr Legg have also increased in numbers. Dot Page, a registered SRN, has joined the team to assist with the increase. She runs a BP clinic on a Monday morning from 11am to screen the patients for Dr Legg's clinic on Monday afternoon. This has become necessary, as the clinic could no longer cope with the numbers. The Coronation clinic has moved to B8, which is more spacious, and user friendly.
EMRAS ambulance has set a figure of US$25 per trip. This is a vital service as we find more and more pensioners are in need of it.

Dentistry - we have had to put on hold due to the cost and the increase of numbers on our books. Our last quote on dentures was US$ 800. We have a waiting list, which we will activate once we have sufficient funds.

Optician - we have limited the number again due to shortage of funds. Bifocals cost US$ 120 + and single US$ 70 +. Our donation of ready readers has helped many of the pensioners.

B5 office has been a godsend to our pensioners, the ease of access and the knowledge that there is someone there in emergency. Our staff has grown to 7 people, Dr Willy Legg, SNR Dot Page, Peter Rollasson (Pharmacist) , Janine Engelbrecht (Office Manager,PA), Beryl Odendaal (Medicines), Tracey Burns (Admin Officer), Isabel Gardener (Assessor). Thank you to this amazing team, who through the darkest times have managed to shine a light of hope, love and compassion, even when their lives are collapsing around them. Well done!

FOOD FOR HOMES BULAWAYO
We had the pleasure of Nigel and Maggie Kay visit us with Shaun from HIZ and Hannes Botha. We were able to show them the homes and the difference their assistance has made. Thank you to Homes in Zimbabwe for their continued support - without you we would not be able to cope with the demand for food. We receive a quarterly delivery of dry goods (R150 000 - R200 000); thank you to all the helpers that off load the truck, this is a major feat as it is all off loaded by hand and takes approximately 4hours, with many aching bodies the following day!!! The homes still receive a weekly delivery of fresh vegetables and we have seen a marked difference in the health of the pensioners.
Our Trade Centre account has been a huge support this year to fill the gaps of the food truck as well as the perishables. Thank you to all of you that have donated to the food account. This has made an incredible difference to the homes who have been able to give their residents such luxuries as cheese and bacon - I know, you would never think of those as luxuries, would you? FHB is drawing R10 000 worth of product from Trade Centre every 6 weeks, so please continue to support this vital cause. Meat and chicken is sourced locally but has to be paid in US$. A chicken is costing R25 (US$2.5) a kilo and we require 54 a week when available (R2025 per week).
Verity Amm soup kitchen is still supplying a hearty meal 5 times a week and tea and biscuits twice a week. This soup kitchen has become vital to the pensioners, as there are no products available unless you have rand or US$. It has also become a social event every day, as people chat and compare notes when they collect their food.

The Bulawayo Theatre Pantomine

I just wanted to say how wonderful the "Santa in Space" production was at the Bulawayo Theatre. My family and friends thoroughly enjoyed their night out and I must say a big Thank You to everyone who is involved in the show. We laughed from the time we walked in to the time we left. Bulawayo has amazing talent which is obvious to see in Null and Void , the Witch and the Dame just to name a few of the cast. Does Bulawayo hold the world record for the number of twins per capita.

Over ten years ago a lady came to live in Bulawayo from overseas. She commented about the number of twins there are in Bulawayo. Is there anyway we can find out how many pairs of twins were born in Bulawayo from a certain date. I know of a pair of twins living in Canada who are about 90, who were born here.
