PAB and the Academy - Puccini: Turandot
Friday 5 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Turandot was Puccini's last opera and is, of course, the home of Nessun dorma but it contains a lot more glorious music in Puccini's typical style as well as something very different in the exotic Chinese influences. This is a truly spectacular production from the Met in New York directed by Franco Zeffirelli and conducted by James Levine with Eva Marton as Turandot and Placido Domingo as Calaf.

PAB and the Academy - Karajan conducts Richard Strauss
Monday 8 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. Admission by donation The second in the series features Strauss's self-portrait, "A Hero's Life", with virtuoso use of a vast orchestra in Karajan's last recording of the work made only a year before death in 1989. The programme will also include "Don Juan" in a performance conducted by Sir Georg Solti which will act as a curtain-raiser to the "Orchestra!" series to be shown in the first term 2009.

Friday 12 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Admission by donation A performance of Handel's oratorio recorded in the Pieterskerk, Leiden in the Netherlands by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge and the Brandenburg Consort conducted by Stephen Cleobury with soloists Lynne Dawson (soprano), Hillary Summers (alto), John Mark Ainsley (tenor) and Alastair Miles (bass).

Monday 15 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. Admission by donation The last of the series features "An Alpine Symphony" which was Strauss's last and longest symphonic poem. On one level it is a fifty-minute depiction of the ascent of an Alpine peak, at another an allegory of life scored with immense resource for an orchestra of over 120 players.
PAB and the Academy - A Christmas Carol: Ballet
Friday 19 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 8.00 p.m. "A Christmas Carol", premiered by the Northern Ballet Theatre in 1992 and described as "an opulent mixture of ballet, musical and theatre", is closely based on Dickens' story and has a score by Carl Davis that incorporates many well-known carols. The production toured Britain, meeting with great success, and was even presented in China. The reviews were full of praise with the Guardian writing of "unassailable magic, the heartstrings are truly plucked" whilst the Daily Express recommended the ballet as "perfect Christmas entertainment" . There will be a supper interval from 6.30, i.e. BEFORE the performance but after the "Planet Earth" DVDs.
PAB and the Academy - Puccini: La Boh-me
Tuesday 23 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. There will be a supper interval. The Puccini series ends with "La Boh-me" on the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth on 23 December 1858 - and, as the first two acts of the opera are set on Christmas Eve, it is even more appropriate to show it at this time! Based on Zeffirelli's spectacular production from La Scala Milan, this DVD version is conducted by Herbert von Karajan, "second to none as a Puccini interpreter, pointing the great emotional climaxes unerringly", and features "Mirella Freni as a meltingly beautiful Mimi and the underrated Gianni Raimondi as a forthright Rodolfo with a ringing, unrestrained tenor". [The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music]

We are pleased to announce that the old tearoom at Hillside Dams will be reopened and fully operational in early November 2008.

We wish to thank you all for bearing with us as we renovate the facilities at the Dams. Hopefully it will be worth waiting for and the Dams will again become of one of the preferred venues in "The City of Kings".

We will be adding several more structures before we are fully complete, but for your convenience we will open for the next few weeks as a tearoom serving only light meals and refreshments.

ROSES ROSES ROSES TO JULIE WESTBROOK.

Julie left Zim in 1981 to continue her nursing training at Greys Hospital.

Since June she has been collecting and sending donated food up to the elderly here in Zimbabwe. It started with a chap with a bakkie originally , then got bigger and she is now sending to Harare, Byo, Kadoma and Chegutu.
Julie now has two couriers who transport it for her for free and personally pay the border duty.
Since the middle of June they have sent up in excess of 12 tonnes which they are thrilled about as Julie is a one lady band and source donations from where ever she can.
Julie is in her eleventh year of night duty in a elite Frail Care as the only sister on duty for 17 patients in Frail Care and she is on call for 430 cottages should some one need help.
Trevor Lowein ( her brother in Byo ) collects it from Senatar Express and hands Byo over to Byo Help Network ( Mike Carter)
He then sends the other boxes on to the elderly in Kadoma , Chegutu and Harare.

All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewelry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. We are situated between 14th and 15th Avenues, Robert Mugabe Way. I will be having the pleasure of running the guest house as manageress and I wish to invite all those seeking to visit/reside/ work in the UK, to stay there, en route to family, friends or work. I have a wealth of knowledge on who to contact, where, the bus and coach routes, how to use the Underground, plus I have access to the internet and have information on care agencies etc. I will also be offering a pick-up from Heathrow and drop-off for those arriving and those departing. For those who wish to visit a few places of interest, ie Windsor, Henley-on-Thames, Maidenhead, Reading, etc I will be available to take up to 4 guests on half-day trips.

For those wanting to do care work and have not had the time/opportunity to contact one of the local agents in Bulawayo, I will provide information and application forms via email, of the various agencies in the UK. I will welcome all current and future carers or those making a new life in the UK, to stay with me. They will be welcomed by a fellow Zimbabwean and enjoy typical Zim hospitality and if an English cooked breakfast is just too much to handle the day after a long-haul flight, I can most certainly make them something more to their taste!

For those en-route from the UK, back to the homeland, the guest house is a homely, friendly and very convenient stop-off before departure. Many carers cannot tie in their last day of work with their flights so I am able to accommodate 5-6 people in a spacious home, with lovely large rear garden, close to a delightful little village with the traditional pub!! Donna will be most welcoming at the 5 Bells in Harmondsworth.

11) SEEKING FRIENDS

I was put onto your web site by an old Bulawayo friend so have had a look-see and noticed that the Byo Polocross Club is still going. What a great suprize. I was one of the `sort of founder' new member when the Club changed from Umguza to its present name. I know through friends that Ted Wilmot is still involved in the sport and would love to get in touch with him and any of the `old school' polo members. I now live in England and still have a lot of friends in Byo and some family in Harare.
