A Starry Soire! - Wine and Music
In conjunction with The Stable Winery, the Academy presents a wine-tasting under the stars with musical accompaniment from Brian Hartmann, Deon Marcus, Peter Rollason, Jill Wild, Billy St.John and the Falcon Jazz Band. There will be a wide selection of wines to sample and superb snacks with, later in the evening, a concert of popular classics on DVD. All profits to the Academy.

A lunchtime talk by Michael Bullivant to introduce the DVD season of symphonic poems by Richard Strauss conducted by Herbert von Karajan who was born a hundred years ago. Wednesday 12 November at 1.10 p.m.

Thank you to the wonderful people of Bulawayo for all the goods which have been donated. Our shelves are almost empty again so please keep bringing all your unwanted goods. All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewellry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. We are situated between 14th and 15th Avenues, Robert Mugabe Way. Tel 69814, shop hours 9am -12pm and 2pm - 4pm except Monday mornings, Saturday morning 9am - 10.45am Thank you for keeping our shop going. Why not pop in and browse. We have a lovely Mahjong set . BULAWAYO CREMATORIUM PROGRESS REPORT.

At last things have started moving,literally,the first consignment of materials has reached Johannesburg and arrangements are being made with Procon South Africa to collect the second load shortly, from Durban. Once all materials are there Colbro will transport them to the site in Bulawayo. Professinal Clearing will clear Customs and hopefully they should be ready for Mark Adamson,a specialist engineeer from South Africa when he flies in early November to supervise the building of the new furnace. He will be assisted by artisans and labourers from United Spring. Felix Tshuma[Dunlop] offered accomodation for Mark and Neil Todd will supply transport if nobody else can. The Cremator furnace should be up and running by early December by which stage a salaried operator will be trained for it's future operation.

A number of people have at some stage served on the local committee. Sadly Dudley Hubbard, the initial chairman who did a lot to get the Project off the ground, passed away in March this year. Neil Todd then took over and the others are Kathy Booysen, [Treas.Datwest], Debbie Kotze [Secretary United Spring], George Enslin [BCC], Lucky Mlilo [ABUZ], Buster McLean, Roger Smith, George Parkin, Dean Peters, Barry Dakin, Mike Burns and Noel Scott.

The Committee are very grateful to the many people who have supported this Project with cash, kind and time. The Beit Trust, through Neil Todd, deserves special thanks for they paid for the total cost of materials thus reducing the burden substantially for the Bulawayo public who are left with whatever costs there are in getting the materails to the site as well as the costs incurred with labour etc.in getting the cremator operational.

For the foreseeable future we will be responsible for the maintenance and running of the Crematorium in partnership with the BCC until the environment is suitable to hand over to them totally with the hope that they will sell the idea of cremation to the general public as is the case in South Africa.

Raspberries to the pathetic inept excuse for a so called postal system where it has taken five months for dividend cheques to be posted from Harare to Bulawayo, postmarked 2 June and received 21 October, issued in old currency which the bank will not accept and the "valued customer" now has to return the cheques and request new currency cheques to be issued in the princely sum of $1.71 - after one has waited in the equally pathetic inept excuse for a so called bank for enough cash to pay for a stamp to return same cheques and perhaps wait another five months for the re-issued cheques to arrive, by which time it will also be worth nothing. What's the point?

I was looking through the internet to try and find a link that might help me trace any relations that my late great uncle has in Bulawayo. He emigrated from Scotland in the early 1900's, his name was Adam Craik and he married a local woman and all I have to go on is that her name was Cath. Adam was born at Caerlaverock in Dumfriesshire Scotland. I think he died in the early 1960's and just after that his wife came over to Scotland after his death to visit relations. Could you put me in touch with someone who could help me with my family tree.
