Music from PAB and the Academy

Karajan conducts Bruckner: Symphony No.8 [DVD]
Karajan conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in the symphony he revered above all others in a performance recorded in the monastery church of St.Florian where Bruckner had been organist and where he lies buried. "Karajan reveals the symphony as a work of epic grandeur and awe-inspiring beauty. I have never heard Bruckner sound so glorious; he appears here as one of the supreme masters of the orchestra, a creator of astonishingly individual sonorities - whether delicate, glowing, melting, blazing or stark - which take one's breath away." [Gramophone]
Monday 20 October at 5.15 p.m. Robert Sibson Hall, admission by donation

Berlioz and 'Les Troyens'
An introduction to Berlioz's epic opera by Michael Bullivant Wednesday 22 October at 1.10 p.m. Academy Room 25, admission by donation

Berlioz: Les Troyens [DVD]
Berlioz's great opera in a superb performance from the Met: "The cast triumphs. Paul Plishka (Narbal) and Alan Monk (Chorebus) resonate rich and full; Claudia Catania gallantly inhabits Ascanius; Jocelyne Tallon's Anna radiates a pleasing rapport with her royal sister. The central trio gives all, their stamina actually increasing as the crises peak! Foretelling bloodshed or routing Greeks, Jessye Norman in her Met debut shows mere mortals what a prophetess must be: possessed, she possesses us. 'Nuit d' ivresse' ennobles two souls which for this brief moment coincide, making the magnificent Placido Domingo's 'Inutiles regrets' the more wrenching. Tatiana Troyanos is every cubit a queen, from the sad 'Ma joie est parfaite' to fatal rage so inflammatory that this Dido does not need a funeral pyre. The sound, upgraded for this reissue, is as grand as the Met Opera orchestra itself. James Levine's pit-to-stage rapport seems psychic. Forget any transient distractions. The great moments - the great hours - of this Troyens will sear their vision into you. [Warren Wright: Opera, May 2008]
Friday 24 October at 5.30 p.m. [N.B starting time!] Robert Sibson Hall, tickets: $1000.00 [There will be a supper interval]
Brass Bandits, a lunchtime talk by Peter Rollason
Wednesday 29 October at 1.10 p.m. Academy Room 25, admission by donation
Karajan conducts Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 & Te Deum
Few films of Herbert von Karajan catch his character or his craft better than these performances of Bruckner's Ninth Symphony and Te Deum. [Richard Osborne]
Monday 3 November at 5.15 p.m. Robert Sibson Hall, admission by donation
Jeanette Micklem plays Beethoven Sonatas
Jeanette Micklem needs no introduction to local audiences and, for her first solo recital in Bulawayo in several years, offers four contrasted Beethoven sonatas, No.21 in C major, Op.53 [Waldstein], No.24 in F sharp major, Op.78, No.26 in E flat major, Op.81a [Les Adieux] and No.32 in C minor, Op.111 Tuesday 4 November at 7.30 p.m. Robert Sibson Hall. Booking at the Academy from Monday 20 October
Puccini: La Fanciulla del West [The Girl of the Golden West]
Jonathan Miller's 1991 production for La Scala has sets by Stefanos Lazaridis, half-stylised, half-realistic, so in Act I the Polka Bar is extraordinarily high, with dozens of large sash windows, far larger than any likely bar. What matters is that the singing cast is strong and Lorin Maazel's conducting persuasive. Placido Domingo makes a heroic Dick Johnson and is in superb voice, rightly winning ovations for each of his big solos. Juan Pons too is wonderfully firm and dark of tone as Jack Rance and Mara Zampieri as Minnie gives a strong, positive performance with fine, clear focus and no suspicion of a wobble. [The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music] Friday 7 November at 6.30 p.m. Robert Sibson Hall [There will be a supper interval]
A Starry Soiree! - Wine and Music
In conjunction with The Stable Winery, the Academy presents a wine-tasting under the stars with musical accompaniment from Brian Hartmann, Deon Marcus, Peter Rollason, Jill Wild, Billy St.John and the Falcon Jazz Band. There will be a wide selection of wines to sample and superb snacks with, later in the evening, a concert of popular classics on DVD. All profits will go to the Academy.
Saturday 8 November at 6.00 p.m. in the Academy grounds (or inside if wet!). Tickets include snacks and wine until the DVD concert at around 8.00 p.m. and will be available from the Academy from Monday 19 October at US$15.00/R150. 00 or the local equivalent on the day.

6) BULAWAYO NEWS

SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES
Thank you to the wonderful people of Bulawayo for all the goods which have been donated. Our shelves are almost empty again so please keep bringing all your unwanted goods. All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewelry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. We are situated between 14th and 15th Avenues, Robert Mugabe Way.
Tel 69814, shop hours 9am -12pm and 2pm - 4pm except Monday mornings, Saturday morning 9am - 10.45am Thank you for keeping our shop going. Why not pop in and browse. We have a lovely Mahjong set . We have an urgent appeal from our kennels for old newspapers.

If you have lost your pet please call the SPCA kennels. If you see an animal in distress please call the SPCA kennels. All too often we find animals run over and injured when a simple call to the SPCA could save their lives. Tel: 66578/66593

The fireworks season is with us again, PLEASE consider all animals before letting off fireworks. Most animals are terrified of the loud bangs and if you must have fireworks ensure that your own and your neighbours animals are safely locked indoors while you let them off.

The Hillside Dams Boma

We are pleased to announce that the old tearoom at Hillside Dams will be reopened and fully operational in early November 2008.

We wish to thank you all for bearing with us as we renovate the facilities at the Dams. Hopefully it will be worth waiting for and the Dams will again become of one of the preferred venues in "The City of Kings".

We will be adding several more structures before we are fully complete, but for your convenience we will open for the next few weeks as a tearoom serving only light meals and refreshments.
For further details or if you have any bright ideas or suggestions please email estate@hillsidedams .com or phone 242490 - the Conservancy office.
Many thanks.

GUARDIAN ANGELS OF EDITH DULY NURSING HOME

GLYNNIS AND JOHN BANNISTER
THE DI PALMA FAMILY

The Board of Trustees of Mater Dei Hospital wishes to inform the community that they are experiencing grave difficulty in engaging medical cover for the Accident and Emergency Unit. Doctors who have serviced this area in the past are no longer available. Currently the nursing staff and the Consultants with admission rights to the hospital are doing everything possible to assist patients utilizing the department.

The hospital's operation has also been hampered with the nurses undertaking illegal job action since June 2008. Every effort is being made to resolve the problems and we wish to inform the community that the hospital is not closed.

It is hoped that everything will be back to normal practice shortly and we wish to express our gratitude to those nurses in the community and to MARS for coming to our assistance at such short notice during the crisis.

HELP KEEP OUR FLIES AT BAY
TAKE YOUR OWN TRASH TO THE DUMP

Go up the Khami road, where the turn off to the SPCA is, do not turn left, turn right there. There is immediately on the right, a municipal workshop kind of thing where all the "dead" refuse lorries are standing like big smelly ghosts !! Just go through the boom and dump your trash in one of the rubbish bins there, or there could be a tip there as well if you are lucky.

I take mine and some neighbours weekly !!

October 2008

Dear Friends and Donors,
Where to start? Since the last update in July, we have, once more, another 'new' currency, which was introduced on the 1st August. This time, TEN zeros where lopped off and the old coins once more became legal tender and $5 was worth 5 billion old Zim dollars. Pensioners who were receiving meagre pensions of around 60 million no longer receive anything as that amounts now to a fraction of a cent. Already, every single commodity is in the tens of thousands of dollars. Since this introduction, more notes of higher values have been produced we now have a $1,000, $10,000 and this week $50,000.

Almost all businesses will not accept a cheque, cash only. The maximum withdrawal this week was raised to Z$50,000 each day. What will that buy after standing for several hours in a queue at the bank? Minced beef at Z$90,000 a kilo? Obviously not. Bread at Z$17,000 a loaf, 6 eggs at Z$20,000 and perhaps one potato at Z$90,000 a kilo. Then queue again the next day. Never mind paying large accounts of utilities bills or perhaps buying your life saving medication (if you can afford it). Just one American dollar at the time of writing is worth around Z$16,000 (Z$160,000,000, 000,000 before 1st August, not forgetting to add the three zero's taken off in '06). In 1980 the Z$ was equal in value to the US$.

Shops are almost empty, what goods are available for payment in Zim dollars are at ridiculous prices as the shopkeeper tries to hedge against inflation estimated at over 1 TRILLION percent. How about a tin of beans for the equivalent of US$80? In this climate, 'Rand' shops have sprung up in the most unlikely places. Some selling from private homes. These charge on average a 100% mark up on the South African price. Fine if you have access to foreign currency, if not you can't buy. Where then does this leave 'our' pensioners? No income, no transport to cross border shop?

S.O.A.P., here in Bulawayo is working hard to procure goods from South Africa and we have also had to start buying from one of the new importers. Luckily, because we are buying in bulk we get a special discount and pay a 60% mark up. As can be imagined this has increased our overheads dramatically. With bereavements and people moving away, in October, we supplied food to 173 needy pensioners but these numbers do increase by 5 or 6 each month. 'Our' recipients will need help for the rest of their lives whatever happens.

As always, we stress that it is YOU that enable us to carry on distributing groceries because of YOUR generosity. We thank YOU all once more for giving 'our' pensioners a little dignity and some hope in these very trying times.

Thank you and God bless you all.
Dave Gill and Louise Campbell.

Dear Mags, Please could you forward me any information that you may have on a friend of mine. Her name is Isobel Freymark and she lived in Bulawayo. We have been friends since 1974 at Rhodes University and lost contact with her. I found an obituary dated 10 December 2004. There were no details. Please could you supply me with any information that you have as she was a very close friend and I am quiet shaken after seeing her name listed in obituaries.

Hi Margaret,
I have been advised by someone in Zimbabwe to e-mail you as they felt that you could be the person to contact for help in searching for my two cousins whom I have never met. These two boys parents have passed away but once lived at 9 Yeatman Road, North End Bulawayo and later moved to 7 Hexagon Court, Abercorn Street, Bulawayo. My two cousins are James PAUL and Ian PAUL.

James PAUL is approximately 55/58 years old. He is married to an Isabelle and I believe they have two children Debbie (approx 29) and Gary Ian (approx 25).

Ian PAUL is approximately 49 years.

Their parents were Lilian and James Paul and I believe they emigrated to Zimbabwe in the fifties. I would be very grateful if you could help in any way or suggest any direction that would be of benefit in the tracing of these two cousins as I am 69 years of age.
With kind regards, Arthur. : arthur@arturo. wanadoo.co. uk

Re: Sr. Mary Little

We have just found the web page www.morningmirror. africanherd. com/smalls/ smalls110. htm. We bought Lyndene from Mary Little in 1964 for 5,000 pounds, and we still live there.

We are maintaining some graves near the main homestead, and are wondering if anyone knows who was interred there.

We would like to contact her, does she have an e-mail address? We would like to send her some photos of the farm as it is now.
Yours sincerely,
Gill & Leon Heathcote. mark.heathcote@ gmail.com
