Tickets will be available for purchase at the Theatre In previous years Petra High School Players have performed in several well known, and loved, period plays. Following our Christmas Carol production last year we were approached by a local playwrite, John Nathan, who asked us if we would like to perform a play, never produced before, which he had written especially for our drama students. It was both a huge compliment and a great challenge. We hope that you will enjoy watching the different characters in the individual roles that they have developed. We also hope that we have you sitting on the edge of your seats in deciding who committed the murder in this entertaining 'Who Dunnit!"

PAB and the Academy present the following events!

Wednesday 17 September: 1.10-1.50 p.m: Berlioz 2- lunchtime talk in Room 25 at the Academy
The second in the series of three illustrated talks by Michael Bullivant on Berlioz's life and works.

Monday 22 September at 5.15 p.m: Berlioz's Messe Solennelle in the Robert Sibson Hall In the imposing setting of Westminster Cathedral, John Eliot Gardiner conducts the first modern performance of the Messe Solennelle by Berlioz, only rediscovered in 1993. It is an astonishing work for a largely self-taught 20-year-old, written for vast forces and containing themes and episodes that Berlioz re-used in many subsequent works.

Wednesday 24-Saturday 27 September: Sponsored Festival Week at the Academy Sponsored Festival Week is a major fund-raising event at the Academy in which the students plus guests present performances sponsored by the minute! There will be concerts every evening from Wednesday to Saturday which, as well as students, will feature Deon Marcus, the BPO Chorus, the ZAM Band, a combined Whitestone/Convent Junior Choir, dancers from Desray's Academy and others. The week will also include DVDs of the Last Night of the Proms (Andrew Davis's last appearance when the conductor's traditional speech was sung à la G&S!). There will be two events on Thursday and Saturday with a supper interval between the two. Admission is free throughout the week though donations will be welcome.

Wednesday 24 September at 5.30 p.m..in the Robert Sibson Hall The opening concert of Sponsored Festival Week including Moszkowski's Spanish Dances played by Deon Marcus and Rose Green and a combined Whitestone/Convent Junior Choir conducted by Jeanette Delport

Thursday 25 September at 5.30 & 7.30 p.m.in the Robert Sibson Hall A concert including the ZAM Band and the BPO Chorus singing such popular songs as Yesterday, Candy Man, Windmills of Your Mind and Top of the World. After a supper interval there will be a DVD of the Last Night of the Proms - including Mozart's Violin Concerto No.4 and the closing scene from Richard Strauss's Salome plus all the usual last night fare!

Friday 19 September at 6.00 p.m.in the Robert Sibson Hall: Bizet's Carmen "Based on a lavish Salzburg Festival production by Karajan himself, his film of Carmen was made with the starriest of casts. Grace Bumbry as Carmen is at her most seductive, sensuous in both voice and looks, establishing herself as sultry and provocative even before she starts singing. Jon Vickers is equally powerful as Don José, defiant from the very beginning, and though his tenor is of heroic scale, he shades it down beautifully for such an aria as the Flower Song. Mirella Freni is an enchanting Micaëla, girlish and fun-loving, with Justino Diaz, a powerful and handsome Escamillo, completing a quartet of principals, not just characterful but vocally firm and clear. Karajan conducts with a combination of bite and warmth." [The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music] There will be a supper interval and the opera will finish at 10.00.

Saturday 27 September at 10.00 a.m.at the Academy: Sponsored A Students' Concert at 10.00 will be followed by a Book, LP & Cassette Sale. A huge number of books will be on sale but more are always welcome and any books, magazines, LPs, cassettes and CD can be brought to the Academy any time between 8.30 and 4.30 during the week or on Saturday morning.

Saturday 27 September at 6.00 & 8.00 p.m.in the Robert Sibson Hall A concert by guests and students at 6.00 p.m. including Natascha Muller (piano) will be followed after a supper interval at 8.00 p.m. by Deon Marcus (piano) whose programme will include music by Spanish and French composers, among them Albeniz, Granados, Mompou, Debussy, Chabrier, Fauré, Poulenc and Ravel as well as Daquin's Le coucou.

Tuesday 30 September at 7.30 p.m. Recital by Anya Birchall (violin) & Jeanette Micklem (piano) in the Robert Sibson Hall Anya has given a wide variety of recitals, both in England and abroad, particularly in Spain. She has performed in a solo capacity all over the world, including France, Hungary, Cyprus and most recently a televised recital in Romania. Her programme is: Brahms: Sonata Movement (Scherzo) in C minor - Smetana: From My Homeland - Elgar: Violin Sonata in E minor, Op.82 - Franck: Violin Sonata in A major.

Thursday 2 October at 7.30 p.m. Recital by Aidan Smith (baritone) & Jeanette Micklem (piano) in the Robert Sibson Hall Aidan has wide experience as a recitalist, oratorio and opera singer both in the UK and abroad and has sung with, among others, Hampstead Garden Opera, Opera Project, British Youth Opera and in William Christie's production of L'Europe Galante. His programme will range widely and include the Songs of Travel by Vaughan Williams (very appropriate as the composer died fifty years ago in 1958), arias by Bizet, Gounod & Mozart and songs by Gershwin, Jerome Kern and from Les Miserables and Man of La Mancha. Booking at the Academy from Wednesday 17 September. A single ticket will give admission to both concerts.

WOZA and MOZA members live where the people's heart beats and we hear how hard their hearts beat with hunger.' - WOZA newsletter August 2007

Notwithstanding increased repression since the March elections, WOZA (Women of Zimbabwe Arise) have kept up their campaign to make the voice of ordinary Zimbabweans heard. They were the first on the streets to demand the results following the March elections and the first to protest about election violence. Their efforts landed Jenni Williams and Magadonga Mahlangu in Chikurubi Women's Prison for almost 6 weeks while other WOZA members were harassed and threatened.

In the time passed since our last newsletter we have experienced a rapid seasonal change here in Zimbabwe. Firstly, the August winds picked up which was to be expected, heralding the new season and blowing away all the dead leaves and dust. Whether it is the air of expectation or simply the noise, one thing is for sure the animals are not always comfortable in the wind. However unpleasant it may be to some, the winds always indicate that spring is on its way. Overnight temperatures rise, the sun seems hotter and the plants all suddenly burst into new buds!! Exciting times...

And no less exciting for us here at the Tikki Hywood Trust, as we have had some rather early arrivals. Most unexpectedly and definitely early in the season, we are pleased to announce the arrival of 3 spiky little hoglets on Wednesday 10th September 2008! What is even more impressive about this whole event is that the hedgehog responsible is Jemima. She came to us on 27th Dec 2007 in a very bad state with a lot of spine loss and old scaring and had also just given birth prior to being transported to us. Sadly, the single little hoglet did not survive the journey and Jemima was depressed for five days after her arrival and was not eating. With a lot of TLC and the a course of antibiotics and vitamin B complex we managed to get Jemima to pick up and soon she settled in with all the other hedgehogs. Obviously she started getting on with the others a bit better than we expected!

She gave birth on 10th September 2008, which puts the conception dates approximately 6 weeks earlier: late July 2008. The birthing must have occurred around midday as when the hoglets were discovered at 4:30pm, they were all pink with little white spines apparent but still soft. The maintenance of mother and baby hedgehogs in a captive situation is extremely delicate. At any provocation, the mother hedgehog may be insecure enough to actually eat her own babies. Therefore, absolutely NO TOUCHING, no noise, no movement for at least the first 72 hours. So unfortunately readers we will only be able to show you pictures of these babies much later. But, to give you an idea what a hoglet looks like - here is a picture of one approximately one week old:

It is interesting that Jemima has chosen to give birth during the day as hedgehogs will normally give birth at night. She also changed her "accommodation" shortly before the birthing, having climbed into Moley Warp's (one of the males) enclosure. Each hedgehog enclosure has two artificial houses which the hedgehogs can crawl into and this is where the hoglets were born. When she entered the house she was to give birth in, Jemima made an artificial door at the entrance with leaves so that no-one can peek in!

To date we are delighted, with hers and the hoglets progress. She is eating well and the babies are content as we have heard not even one squeak from inside the house. We are constantly monitoring for signs of distress - e.g. mother running around in an agitated fashion, or noises from the hoglets. If the hoglets are distressed we may have to remove them and hand-raise them, but this will only be a last resort.

And so our hedgehog breeding programme appears to have been quite successful. We had many responses from caring people, thank you so much to all who took the trouble to bring or send hogs to us. All the hogs came from Bulawayo, and in response to your notice - so I'd really like those people concerned to know what a good job they did. We are not looking for any more hedgehogs at this time, we will let you know if we need any more so if you come across a hedgehog, move him to safety and lets hope all will be well with our little prickly friends.

FUN QUIZ FOR GARDEN PARK GUEST HOUSE - 05 SEPTEMBER 2008

Once again we had a fantastic response to the Fun Quiz held at Bulawayo Country Club on 05 September 2008 with approximately 100 people attending. I would like to express extreme gratitude and thanks to the following people:

Troy & Tara Maidwell - who donated a garden' of the hugest vegetables we have ever seen. Peter & Tracy Greeff - Who donated two case's of imported beers which certainly helped to smooth the evening along. George Boswell - once again for the use of his fantastic sounds system which is so necessary with 100 people attending. Marion Buchholz and her team - for a scrumptious chicken casserole meal and pub menu. Di & Yvonne and the Country Club staff - for ensuring the bar was stocked and the hall laid out beautifully with enough room for everyone. Team FairBrain - the winning team who redonated all the fantastic vegetables to the residents of garden park guest house.

And most importantly. ......... . To everyone who attended and their kind and generous donations which equated to about R3500 on the night. Thanks once again for a fun and successful evening.

11) SEEKING FRIENDS To whom it may concern
I am trying to contact one of the former teachers at Girls College Teachers, a Mrs D Tod. Possibly one of your past / present staff remembers her name? She possibly taught between 1970 and 1985. I was taught by her at Gifford from 1981 to 1983 and am aware she was at Gifford in 1976 (from the staff photo) but have drawn a bit of a blank from the Gifford Alumni Website - aside from someone referring me to your school as his daughter was taught by Mrs Tod. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards

Hi Mags!

I have just hugely enjoyed reading your 'Voices from our glorious past' piece on the web. Surprised that you don't mention Peter Tobin or John Bishop, two of the most urbane presenters you could wish for. My wife and I were contestants on the first ever family quiz show on RTV (probably only seen in the Salisbury area) with Peter Tobin and Leslie Sullivan comperes. Peter was as charming as he looked, and Leslie was, well, just Leslie. (We won first prize, by the way, a trip to London by Comet, and that completely changed the direction of our lives). John Bishop, of course, after being the announcer for Ian Smith's UDI declaration, moved to SA and became the newsanchor on SABC TV for two decades.

From your piece, may I use the quote about Beryl Salt and the other one about Sally D, please? I only knew SD when I was back in the country 1977-78, but she was peerless, and so attractive. It must have given our boys in the bush such solace. I must say, your item and the other one available about Radio LM personalities throw up so many names I have never heard of, but reveal the depth of talent there was in Rhodesia.

Two that nobody mentions are John Parry and Humphrey Ellison, both ex-BBC I seem to remember. JP used to produce memorable radio shows which always drew great reviews, and HE was the first news editor at RTV who I auditioned with about the job that Geoffrey Atkins got. Mike Westcott was a hoot, and we still play his 'It's a Long Way to Mukumbura' and 'We are the Shumba Drinkers' from our collection, ek se ek se. Martin Locke I thought was the greatest of them all, and he had stints on Radio Luxembourg and ITV over this side, and now is the main sports anchor in SA, or was.

Do you have any information about Don Burdette or Peter Tobin, please? There seems to be nothing about PT (aside from that ghastly murderer namesake!) and very little about DB on the web. I know that Peter's sister June Tobin was a star of BBC radio drama for some years, and that's all.

All the best,
Barry McC (UK) bazzamc @sky. com
