3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE WHO CARE ...
The Wilson Family at Chipangali have cared for our wildlife for 35 years. They have saved, adopted & cared for countless animals, carnivors, antelope, rhino, birds, elephant, monkeys, snakes .... anything that needs a home is never turned away.
They are finding times desperately hard (22/8/2008) with the food shortages and economic problems.
They are trying to find scrap veggies at most places and if it wasn't for Ascot Spar, Hillside Spar and Willsgrove Vegetables, they would have a real problem. They are busy making their own rhino food at the moment which they are also feeding to all the antelopes, the ducks, etc.
Our carnivores are our biggest problem at the moment. With our phones being almost non existent, we are not getting the required meat and so we have resorted to grinding our own maize meal or buying it when we can - and cooking and mixing it with the not so nice meat - to try and feed to the wild dogs and some of the lions who are willing to eat it.
They need YOUR help with donations of meat, grain and vegetables.
Also we are going to hopefully be sending up to 17 lions to a very caring NON HUNTING conservationist in South Africa, who is trying to breed white lions with the Chipangali lions who have exceptionally beautiful manes.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO AND THE ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC
Puccini - a BBC Film in the Robert Sibson Hall on Monday 1 September at 5.15 p.m.
This film begins with "Nessun dorma" and the World Cup, then traces Puccini's rise from
his humble origins in the town of Lucca in Tuscany to his position as the most popular of
opera composers. His love of his home and its local lake, his serial infidelities, his unhappy
marriage, his obsession with hunting and his final illness are told alongside the story of
his music. Those taking part include neighbours who remember him personally, his
grand-daughter Simonetta, Simon Callow, Julian Budden and Sir Charles Mackerras and
there are excerpts from the operas sing by Julia Migenes and Jos Cura.
Berlioz 1- lunchtime talk at the Academy on Wednesday 3 September: 1.10 p.m.
The first in a series of three illustrated talks by Michael Bullivant on Berlioz's life and works
with particular reference to the DVDs to be shown in September and October.
Puccini's Tosca (DVD) in the Robert Sibson Hall on Friday 5 September at 6.30 p.m. There
will be a supper interval and the opera will finish at 10.00.
This gripping and visually stunning film has been universally hailed as one of the most
satisfying of all versions of opera on DVD. Director Gianfranco de Bosio has given an
extraordinary dimension of realism to the story of love, deception and murder by shooting
it all on the original Roman locations specified in Puccini's libretto. The three exceptional
singer-actors who bring this classic drama vividly to life are the beautiful soprano Raina
Kabaivanska as Puccini's passionate heroine, Placido Domingo as her doomed lover and
Sherrill Milnes as their nemesis, the villainous Baron Scarpia. "The finest opera production
I have ever seen on the screen." [The Washington Post]
Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique in the Robert Sibson Hall on Monday 8 September at 5.15
p.m.
John Eliot Gardiner conducts l'Orchestre Rvolutionnaire et Romantique in a performance
of the Symphonie Fantastique on period instruments including ophicleides and a serpent
as well as six harps, recorded in the hall of the old Paris Conservatoire where the
symphony had its first performance in 1830.
Recital by Catherine Foxcroft (piano) in the Robert Sibson Hall on Tuesday 16
September at 7.30 p.m.
Catherine Foxcroft is senior lecturer in piano and chamber music at the Department of
Music and Musicology at Rhodes University in South Africa and is considered to be one of
South Africa's finest young pianists. She studied with the renowned pianist and teacher
Arie Vardi from 1991 to 2000 at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover,
Germany and was a distinguished semi-finalist and finalist at international piano and
chamber music competitions in the USA, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Greece and
Italy during that time. Catherine has performed as soloist with several orchestras in
Europe and appears frequently with South African orchestras. She performs nationally and
internationally in recital and has recorded for the SABC, Radio Telifis (Ireland), Nord
Deutsche Radio and the West Deutsche Radio (Germany). Her CD recordings and live
recordings are broadcast frequently on FMR and SAfm in South Africa.
The first half of her programme consists of Schubert's last sonata in B flat major and the
second half includes Chopin: Valse brillante, Rachmaninov: Three Preludes, Liszt: Isolde's
Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde and Granados: Allegro de Concierto.
Booking at the Academy from Monday 1 September.
Berlioz 2- Lunchtime Talk at @ the Academy on Wednesday 17 September: 1.10 p.m.
The second in the series of three illustrated talks by Michael Bullivant on Berlioz's life and
works.
Bizet's Carmen (DVD) in the Robert Sibson Hall on Friday 19 September at 6.00 p.m. There
will be a supper interval and the opera will finish at 10.00.
"Based on a lavish Salzburg Festival production by Karajan himself, his film of Carmen was
made with the starriest of casts. Grace Bumbry as Carmen is at her most seductive,
sensuous in both voice and looks, establishing herself as sultry and provocative even
before she starts singing. Jon Vickers is equally powerful as Don Jos, defiant from the
very beginning, and though his tenor is of heroic scale, he shades it down beautifully for
such an aria as the Flower Song. Mirella Freni is an enchanting Micaëla, girlish and fun-
loving, with Justino Diaz, a powerful and handsome Escamillo, completing a quartet of
principals, not just characterful but vocally firm and clear. Karajan conducts with a
combination of bite and warmth." [The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music]
Berlioz's Messe Solennelle (DVD) in the Robert Sibson Hall on Monday 22
September at 5.15 p.m.
In the imposing setting of Westminster Cathedral, John Eliot Gardiner conducts the first
modern performance of the Messe Solennelle by Berlioz, only rediscovered in 1993. It is an
astonishing work for a largely self-taught 20-year-old, written for vast forces and
containing themes and episodes that Berlioz re-used in many subsequent works.

10)) LIFTS WANTED AND OFFERED
I am desperate to find an urgent lift for a friend in need from Chegutu to the Botswana
border....or Francistown.
Rose lives is Chegutu, her mother has recently passed away. (Rose looked after her until
she died so the bond is very strong) Rose is lost, depressed, and alone. Doesn't know
what to do first. I have advised that she not do anything right away. To come here for a
break, relax, think, see, be with friends, talk things out, only then can she make a
constructive decision with a clear mind. But I have no way of getting her here. She has
very little money and cannot afford a bus or flight....has no transport of her own. In fact
she like many others I know, is stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can travel from
Maun to the border to collect her from there.....but cannot come through to Zim to do the
whole trip......Perhaps you know of someone who can help? Or put me in touch with some
one who can help?
Heather
