Thank you to the wonderful people of Bulawayo for all the goods which have been donated. Our shelves are almost empty again so please keep bringing all your unwanted goods. All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewelry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. We are situated between 14th and 15th Avenues, Robert Mugabe Way.

The Secret to Life for Kids
I will be holding more courses later these holidays for children of all ages covering, positive thinking, goal setting and self esteem. There will be a special course for grade 7's writing exams next term to help them deal with the stresses of exams and to help them to have a positive outlook on their future success. JACARANDA SPOTTERS .... 15 August 08

The first jacaranda flowers of spring !!! Twenty minutes ago I was looking down from my aerie in Sunningdale and I saw some jacaranda flowers in the tree outside the front entrance. Have I won the first prize ?

Further up the road there is a tree outside the pool, which has quite a number of flowers and if I had been more observant I would have taken first prize at the beginning of the month.

Something for your Raspberries and Roses - - - from Jon and Bonnie Kappeyne - -

On Saturday 3rd August, at about midday, we stopped on the roadside,( but not a formal lay-by), about 4kms before Beit Bridge town, to refuel and pour some tea, etc. Jon was at the right rear door, and I was in the front (left) passenger seat, pouring tea from a thermos, when two guys with knives arrived from ??! - - nowhere, demanding "CASH!"

The one at the rear was very aggressive, and managed to slash /stab Jon 3 times, when he didn't comply immediately. The other guy was younger and quieter, but also said "Cash, Cash!" I threw the tea at him, and tried to hold onto his knife, while I got a pepper spray out of my bag. He may have thought I was getting the cash (??,) because he stopped resisting, but pulled away, as I was trying to flip the safety catch - - -. With this there was a lot of shouting and both assailants and our clothes suitcase headed for the hills!!- - - a Pickup truck had stopped, because the driver had seen Jon being stabbed and had come to our assistance!. Some young guys jumped off the back of the bakkie and gave chase, but the tsotsis were long gone.

Although we thanked them at the time, we didn't get names or details of the kind people who rescued us! It all happened so fast, that they had driven off, before we realised. - - -THANKS AGAIN!!

We are very grateful, as the outcome of this attack would have been quite different, if they hadn't stopped! If they happen to see this letter; or if someone knows who they are, please could they contact us.

From there we drove to the B.Bridge police, with Jon leaving an impressive blood trail, all over the place. A sympathetic police officer accompanied us to the doctor's rooms, for the wounds to be sutured. The staff there were very good and even washed and dried Jon's shirt, which was a mess (and the only one he had that wasn't in the case!!) While the medics were busy, I returned to the police station, where. the dog unit were waiting. We drove back to the spot and the dog and 3 policemen set off, following the track taken by the thieves! So far no arrests, but they are working on it, so if you stop on the road, be aware of Tsotsis!

As this story is retold, one realises that there are great people, willing to help and police and medical staff who are dedicated to doing a good job, even in difficult times! Keep it up and - - - Thank you, one and all.

The Matthew Townshend and Heath Streak Cricket Clinic.

Matthew Townsend and Heath Streak will be holding a cricket clinic for junior school boys and girls sponsored by Gray Nicolls. The clinic will start o the Wednesday 6th August and finish on Saturday the 9th August. It will consist of different age group coaching over 3 days held at Whitestone School. Each child will then play a cricket match at Queens Sports Club against a Zimbabwe development team. The kids will receive a clinic T-shirt and cap and a prize giving will follow the last match on the Saturday afternoon.

Miss Johanna Voltz, a French teacher who is currently teaching French at the University of Zimbabwe, is here with us for attachment until the 22nd of August 2008.

WARNING TO MOTORISTS TRAVELING TO BEITBRIDGE

We would like warn motorists of an unpleasant incident that occurred recently on the road just north of Beitbridge.

Two travelers from Bulawayo stopped under a shady tree about 4 km from Beitbridge to have some refreshments, having taken the precaution of avoiding any laybyes as potential places of danger, and were attacked by two men brandishing knives who appeared out of the undergrowth and demanded money. The driver resisted and was stabbed in the face, arms and thigh. The couple were only saved by the approach of another vehicle carrying a number of men which caused the attackers to flee. They escaped with the driver's suitcase, but fortunately all travel documents and money were safe in a separate hidden folio. The occupants of the other car gave chase on foot but were unable to catch the assailants.

This incident indicates that any likely stopping places on our main roads - not just laybyes - are targeted by robbers who lie in ambush for unsuspecting motorists, and should be avoided. If it is necessary to stop on the open road, an open area which does not provide cover for potential thieves should be selected - but even then instances are known when motorists breaking their journey on the roadside have been accosted by assailants who arrived in another vehicle.
