In view of the announcement that schools will be closed for the whole of next week, I thought that we should perhaps confirm that the Academy will remain open and function as normal throughout the week. If Friday is declared a public holiday, then the Academy will close on that day but the DVD of Sadko will still be shown as advertised.

Forthcoming DVDs are as follows:

Rimsky-Korsakov: Sadko - Robert Sibson Hall, 5.30 p.m. on Friday 27 June

Rimsky-Korsakov died a hundred years ago on 20 June 1908 and, although best remembered for his orchestral music, he was primarily an operatic composer with fifteen to his credit. Sadko is one of the best and Robert Layton has written that "for this listener, at least, the finest of the Rimsky-Korsakov operas bring to life a world of magic and mystery, and Sadko in particular with its fairy-tale atmosphere exhibits an imagination and innocence that are quite special." It tells an exotic tale of the sea-faring adventures of the legendary minstrel Sadko and Valery Gergiev directs a huge cast in a truly spectacular staging from the Kirov Opera including an under-sea ballet and all manner of delights.

Mahler
The Mahler cycle continues at 5.15 on Monday 23 June with Das Lied von der Erde, the song-symphony considered by many to be Mahler's greatest work. The soloists are Christa Ludwig and René Kollo with, on this occasion, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and the conductor, as throughout the series, is Leonard Bernstein. "René Kollo brings the heft and heroism of a great Wagner singer to his songs, while Chrsta Ludwig, unarguably the greatest exponent of the contralto songs at the time, is magnificent throughout, unbearably poignant in the Abschied's rarefied fusion of elation and sadness.' [David Gutman]
On Thursday 3 July at 1.10 there will be an introductory talk by Leonard Bernstein to Mahler's last completed symphony, the Ninth - "Four Ways to Say Farewell" - and this will be followed by the symphony itself at 5.15 on Monday 7 July. Back to the Vienna Philharmonic for this one, but filmed when the orchestra was on tour in Berlin.

We're currently planning our programme for the last part of the year and hope there will be several live concerts - always assuming some sanity returns to the country. In August there will be DVDs of Donizetti'sLa fille du régiment, the smash hot of recent seasons at both Covent Garden and the Met, and the balletRomeo and Juliet in Kenneth Macmillan's celebrated production.
We're also planning a series of DVD "seasons", one of five Puccini operas together with an introductory documentary to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth on 23 December 1858. Two of the operas will be conducted by Herbert von Karajan who was born a hundred years ago on 5 April 1908 so there will also be DVDs of him conducting Bizet's Carmen, four symphonic poems by Richard Strauss and two symphonies by Bruckner. We shall also have a series of works by Berlioz including the Symphonie fantastique and theGrande messe des morts and ending with his great opera Les Troyens. And we also have some "treats" lined up for Christmas!

The Academy is planning a book sale at the end of July so, if you have any books you'd like to get rid of, please drop them off at the Academy at any time between 8.30 and 4.30 Monday to Friday. We shall be very grateful!

10 a) SEEKING FRIENDS
A friend of ours, Mike Swears, is searching for his biological parents and although he has tried for about 3 years to locate them all efforts have proved fruitless although they do have a fair amount of information. . Perhaps you may know or have heard of the people concerned.

His mother is Catherine Veronica Lumsden - Taylor (nee Jones) who will be aged about 64 now.

The following was sent to me by Mike:
Mrs Catherine Veronica Lumsden Taylor was a widow born on 29 May 1944. She worked as an Insurance Clerk: Office Planners and her mother was a Secretary whilst her father worked as a plant operator, but at the time of the adoption case, the employment status ws unknown. She had been the only child in the family. Her husband, Lumsden Taylor was a mercenary in Congo and had been killed in Action in 1967, three years prior to Mike's birth. Catherine had learnt up to Form Three at Gwelo Convent. She had two children, 9 yrs and 5 yrs and when she conceived Michael, the father was unwilling to discuss marriage.Michael' s father is listed as Jeffrey William Smith, a divorcee, European who was 28 at the time of adoption case and lived in Rhodes Street , Bulawayo. He worked as a shunter in the Rhodesia Railways. His father worked in the South African Railways and was alive in SA at the time. Mr Smith disappeared on being told that Catherine was pregnant. Efforts to track Mr Jones in Gweru have proved fruitless.

Hope you can help..any info will be of assistance. Mike now lives in Ozzie but perhaps you could pass this on to ex Gwelo/Byo folk, especially the older generation !!
