PAB: Rimsky-Korsakov' s Sadko at the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.30 p.m. on Friday 27 June [DVD] Rimsky-Korsakov died a hundred years ago on 20 June 1908. Although best remembered for Scheherazade, the Capriccio espagnol and other orchestral works, Rimsky was primarily an operatic composer with fifteen to his credit. Sadko is one of the best and Robert Layton has written that "for this listener, at least, the finest of the Rimsky-Korsakov operas bring to life a world of magic and mystery, and Sadko in particular with its fairy-tale atmosphere exhibits an imagination and innocence that are quite special." It tells an exotic tale of the sea-faring adventures of the legendary minstrel Sadko and Valery Gergiev directs a huge cast in a truly spectacular staging from the Kirov Opera including an under-sea ballet and all manner of delights. "A shimmering fairy tale of an opera. lovely tunes to beguile the ear" [Amazon.com] . THERE WILL BE A SUPPER INTERVAL..

PAB: La fille mal gardée at the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Friday 11 July [DVD] La fille mal gardée is a ballet set in a village in the French countryside which tells how the Widow Simone is determined to betroth her willful daughter Lise to the eccentric son of a rich farmer, but Lise and her lover Colas conspire to thwart the widow's plans. This production comes from the Australian Ballet and led one critic to comment that "Comedy, pathos and lyricism unite in choreographic perfection to create one of the masterpieces in the 20th century ballet repertoire". The choreography was created by Sir Frederick Ashton for the Royal Ballet and the music arranged from Hérold's original score by John Lanchbery. Both are utterly delightful with Widow Simone's Clog Dance perhaps the most famous highlight from both a musical and dance point of view! The ballet is comparatively short (about an hour-and-three- quarters) so on this occasion a 7.30 start and no supper interval... but by all means feel free to bring a little pre-performance and interval refreshment!

PAB: The Drakensberg Boys Choir at the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Monday 14 July The Drakensberg Boys Choir will be making their first visit to Zimbabwe for at least ten years. Their tour is part of a fund-raising drive by Peterhouse and Bulawayo will be the first stop. Booking will open at the Academy on Monday 30 June.

PAB: Gounod's Faust at the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.30 p.m. on Friday 25 July [DVD]Gounod' s Faust used to be one of the most popular operas in the repertoire, and deservedly so since it's bang-full of good tunes amongst which the Waltz, Soldiers' Chorus and final trio are only three of the best-known. Recorded at the Vienna State Opera "with a superb cast revelling in Gounod's beloved melodies, here is the provocative, visually sumptuous production by famed film-maker Ken Russell". At the time Russell told an interviewer, "the Faust libretto now seems rather silly. He loves her, she loves him - so why do they need the devil? That's why I'm trying to make it more realistic, more vivid." He tried to achieve this aim by turning Marguerite into a young nun which, in his view, resulted in a genuine conflict as Mephistopheles was now also determined to seduce her! In most other respects he remained faithful to the libretto though he adds a group of female dancers who regularly intervene in the action, adding their own comments on it. A major scandal was expected at the first night but in the event the critical response was summed up in one review which found the production "decidedly entertaining" ! THERE WILL BE A SUPPER INTERVAL.

THE DRAKENSBERG BOYS CHOIR

The Drakensberg Boys Choir will be making their first visit to Zimbabwe for at least ten years. Their tour is part of a fund-raising drive by Peterhouse and Bulawayo will be the first stop. There will be a separate news letter with full details in about a week's time and booking will open at the Academy on Monday 30 June. Ticket prices are still to be decided and on this occasion I'm afraid that subscribers will have to pay for their seats.

OPERAS AND A BALLET

Two operas and a ballet in the period covered by this newsletter.

On FRIDAY 27 JUNE, there will be a novelty in the shape of Sadko by Rimsky-Korsakov who died a hundred years ago on 20 June 1908, so this will represent an appropriate centenary tribute. "A shimmering fairy tale of an opera.. lovely tunes to beguile the ear" [Amazon.com] . THERE WILL BE A SUPPER INTERVAL.

La fille mal gardée on FRIDAY 11 JULY is set in a village in the French countryside and tells how the Widow Simone is determined to betroth her wilful daughter Lise to the eccentric son of a rich farmer, but Lise and her lover Colas conspire to thwart the widow's plans.

Two weeks later on FRIDAY 25 JULY more but very different French music in the shape of Gounod's Faust. This used to be one of the most popular operas in the repertoire, and deservedly so since it's bang-full of good tunes amongst which the Waltz, Soldiers' Chorus and final trio are only three of the best-known. That's why I'm trying to make it more realistic, more vivid."

He tried to achieve this aim by turning Marguerite into a young nun which, in his view, resulted in a genuine conflict as Mephistopheles was now also determined to seduce her! MAHLER

Please note the change of dates! Mahler continues at 5.15 on Monday 23 June with Das Lied von der Erde, the song-symphony considered by many including Leonard Bernstein to be Mahler's greatest work. Unlike the symphony cycle, this performance was recorded with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the soloists are Christa Ludwig and René Kollo.

On Thursday 3 July there will be an introductory talk by Leonard Bernstein to Mahler's last completed symphony, the Ninth - "Four Ways to Say Farewell" and this will be followed by the symphony itself on Monday 7 July. The talk's title is a touch misleading since, despite the popular misconception, the Ninth was not intended as a conscious farewell to life and Mahler worked on another symphony though he died before he was able to complete it.

On Monday 21 July Bernstein conducts the opening movement of the Tenth Symphony which Mahler orchestrated himself and we shall pair it with a selection of his most delightful songs, the ones derived from Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

To round things off, there will be two more symphonies in August: on Monday 4 August there will be a second performance of the vast Eighth Symphony with its eight soloists, boys' chorus, adult choruses and huge orchestra conducted by Klauss Tennstedt in the Royal Festival Hall - a tremendous performance in stunning sound!

Later in the month, since there is no DVD of the completed Tenth, there will be an audio recording instead. Mahler sketched every bar of this five-movement symphony and in its completed version it is now heard as often as most of the other symphonies. Conductors of the older generation such as Bernstein (and Solti, Haitink and Kubelik, to name three others who recorded complete cycles) refused to conduct it, which is curious when they were all happy with Mozart's Requiem which was left more incomplete than Mahler's Tenth! It seems important to me that the Tenth should be heard since its last movement contains some of the most moving and beautiful music Mahler ever wrote - and the final minutes leave a rather different and more optimistic impression than the last pages of Das Lied and the Ninth.

[Mahler was born in 1860 and died in 1911 so there will be plenty of excuse to revisit his music in a couple of years' time!]

LUNCHTIME TALKS

These will resume with Peter Rollason on Wednesdays 16 & 30 July. More details in the next newsletter. Best wishes as always,

MICHAEL BULLIVANT

11) SEEKING FRIENDS Hi Mags

My name is Ernest Higgs and I'm doing some research on my familytree. All my dad's family lived in Zimbabwe and sadly are also all deceased. Dad is the only one still alive and living in South Africa. However, he's memory is no longer what it used to be with the result that he cannot provide me with any dates. I am trying to find (hopefully) obituaries for the following family members:

Ernest Chares Samuel Higgs (deceased Bulawayo c1963) Carolina Aletta (Carrie) Higgs (deceased Salisbury c1978) June van Reeuwyk (deceased Bulawayo c1975)

and birth notices for: Andrew Higgs (born Bulawayo c1957) Brenda Higgs (born Bulawayo 1 Mar 1959) David Higgs (born Bulawayo c1970) Vaughn van Reeuwyk (born Bulawayo c1953) Dean van Reeuwyk (born Bulawayo c1957) If there are any newspapers online that may still carry this information or advice where else I might look I would greatly appreciate in receiving it.
Thank you in advance.

Tabbeth and I were friends when we both lived in Bulawayo but lost touch when I moved 2 years ago. I noted with great interest that Tabbeth has moved to Switzerland and would love to get in touch with her again. Is there anybody who could kindly give me Tabbeths e-mail address? Please let me know how overseas readers can contribute to Morning Mirror. My e-mail address is fraserclose@ yahoo.com Many thanks indeed. Heather.

She had been the only child in the family. Her husband, Lumsden Taylor was a mercenary in Congo and had been killed in Action in 1967, three years prior to Mike's birth. Catherine had learnt up to Form Three at Gwelo Convent. She had two children, 9 yrs and 5 yrs and when she conceived Michael, the father was unwilling to discuss marriage. Michael's father is listed as Jeffrey William Smith, a divorcee, European who was 28 at the time of adoption case and lived in Rhodes Street , Bulawayo. He worked as a shunter in the Rhodesia Railways. His father worked in the South African Railways and was alive in SA at the time. Mr Smith disappeared on being told that Catherine was pregnant. Subject: Darwood Cassim
My name is Marsh Gibson, I am looking for Darwood Cassim of Cassim Prosthetics in Bulawayo. I worked with Darwood many years ago and would like very much to make contact with him again. Could I ask you to pass my email address to him or can anyone possibly send me his.

I left Zimbabwe in 1991 and moved to Australia, where I am well settled in the Northern Territory and extremely happy. No matter how happy one is in ones new country however, you still miss Zims. I knew things were bad back there but your articles really bring it home. Here we sit, whining about paying $1.60/litre for fuel, when we can fill up at any hour of the day or night however much we want. We whine when our steak is a bit tough, but supply is cheap and limitless. We complain about the cost of power and water, but it is constantly available. I could go on.. Your articles have given me such respect for the way you who remained are coping with the situation. You have kept your humour and "life just goes on". I would just like to say thank you, you have given me a warm feeling in my heart. Keep your chin up and please keep writing your articles. I do hope things will improve over there is you can get a "change" in the current situation.

Mags, I think you may have known my Mom, she also used to work at the ZBC, but inHarare, not Bulawayo. Her name was Bertha (Bee) van Bart.

All the best

Regards Kathy Lake
