BMX UPDATE

'WORLDS' - CHINA

The following Bulawayo riders were selected for the recently held 'Worlds' competition in China, Matthew Noach, Jonathan Connelly and Kristen and Andre Pretorius. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, Matthew Noach was the only Bulawayo rider to represent Zimbabwe and did us proud by coming home with a World No.6 Plate so a huge well done to Matt!!!

Well done to the Harare riders who represented Zimbabwe and came home with the following: Daniel Van Rooyen - 4th Tayne - 2nd Matt Denslow - 4th Tyler Che Donaldson - 4th Ezra Van Rooyen - 3rd Broc Meyer - 2nd Kurt Pollen - 5th Excellent results for Zimbabwe! NEW TRACK Great news for the Bulawayo riders is that our fantastically redesigned and revamped track is open. For any riders interested in starting BMX, the track is open for practices every Tuesday and Thursday evening between 4.30 and 6.00 pm with races being held every second Saturday. Bikes are available for hire and there are also second hand bikes / helmets for sale. BMX is an exciting and challenging outdoor sport for kids and despite the trying times we are going through, BMX is being kept very much alive in Bulawayo. At the other end of the spectrum, we have an old lady who has throat cancer and can only swallow thin fluids, for her I need smaller containers so that her food can be prepared and frozen. Big plastic containers to store partially prepared food in the cold room. Plastic chopping boards. Plastic sieves Plastic Storage Containers for salt, flour, sugar etc, Measuring Cups of all sizes A variety of funnels For cleaning we need:- Mops Scrubbing brushes Buckets for hot water Buckets for cold water. Plastic pot scourers Plastic dish washing brushes. Dust bins with lids for vegetable refuse and wet and dry refuse. The wards could do with some plastic mugs. SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES Thank you to the wonderful people of Bulawayo for all the goods which have been donated. Our shelves are almost empty again so please keep bringing all your unwanted goods. All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewelry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. We are situated between 14th and 15th Avenues, Robert Mugabe Way. Tel 69814, shop hours 9am -12pm and 2pm - 4pm except Monday mornings, Saturday morning 9am - 11am. 3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES

How excited I was to read a complaint about ZESA on Roses and Raspberries a couple of weeks ago, I have been wanting to write one myself for months but had decided I had become a rather irritated, grumpy person in my later years as there appeared to be nobody else out there pulling their hair out at the way ZESA treats its consumers. Yes trying to get a balance out of ZESA is a mission but trying to get a printed statement is even harder. It has been about 2 years since I last received any company statements, in all this time ZESA claim their printers are not working or the system is not allowing them to print statements. Having no statements for companies means we cannot claim VAT back and I do believe it is a legal requirement that VAT registered companies have to produce proper VAT invoices. I did receive some statements by e-mail, but not being a fundi on IT and knowing I have quite old computers and printers I found the e-mail statement a waste of time. The portion where all the figure work is, is shaded, consequently when I printed the statements all my printer produced was a shaded area but no figures. When you go into the offices apart from Mr. Ngubeni I have found the staff treat consumers with utter contempt. Receiving no statements one can't check if previous payments have been credited, at the end of last year I discovered 2 of my payments had not been credited, this was a chance discovery, how many other payments have not been credited and this fact never established because of the lack of a statement. I understand times are hard, but it is about time ZESA got their act together and if their system is such a shambles at least have a staff that responds in a pleasant way to queries and who don't give the impression that you are disturbing their time at ZESA by expecting them to do some work!

Calling all ostomates I was in Harare recently and saw Sister Rudo Mutekedzo, the stoma nurse. She is concerned that she is getting panicky phone calls from Bulawayo ostomates since Thabbeth Cotton is now living in Switzerland. She said that she is willing to go to Bulawayo once a month to help ostomates if someone can organise it. She says that she has some donated supplies for those who can't afford appliances, but the recipient would have no choice of styles etc. I must also say that Nokuthula Mpofu is running the Bulawayo office, and that Thabbeth says she will be coming to Bulawayo three times a year. Sometimes when Nokuthula has to go out of the office, she has no one to man it, and just closes the door. I know from experience that it's alarming to find a closed door with no indication of when she will return!! She does still have supplies and says she can help most patients. While browsing the web I came across your 30.1.2006 article mentioning the "notorious" Derek Mulholland and Aidan Diggedin.

This came as quite a surprise. Derek and Aidan were both about three years ahead of me at Chaplin.

Derek was always a character - but pretty straight and a good influence through sport, cadets, drama club etc on those following in his footsteps. I recall that he returned to Thornhill to teach when I was in my final Midlands Combined 6th Form year and that he (in spikes), Gillie Squire (Llambretta scooter) and myself (Triumph Bonneville !!!) were encouraged into a drag down the new 100m athletic track. Needless to say I won but tore a huge strip up the middle of the track in the process. Gillie's participation absolved me of recriminations but it was a close call to six of the best. That Derek should have become notorious seems totally out of character. I have searched the web to try and find out more information without success. Are you able to provide any details ??? Aidan on the other hand I would go as far as to call a friend. He was the leader of our swimming pool "gang" and we were both in the same Midlands Team going to the Federal / National Championships for a number of years with him the senior and me the junior diver. He was always "naughty" and led us on many fruit stealing escapades after Friday night galas. He started getting into trouble with minor shop lifting incidents etc and I think that he was already in the Bulawayo jail by the time I left Gwelo for university in Cape Town. I visited him once when he was in jail in Salisbury and then bumped into him again at the Killarney Race Track in Cape Town where he was competing in a hot Mini under the alias Chris Taylor. He helped me source some parts for my own car (legally I hope) but shortly after that he was arrested (but escaped) for a massive car ringing scam. I have tried to follow up what happened to him after he was deported to the UK but have never found any leads. For my part I am now retired and living in the UK but take on occasional assignments in the biomass energy industry which allow me to see different parts of the world. Needless to say I miss my old Chaplin / Gwelo mates and our idyllic life in Rhodesia and take every opportunity of doing my own "whatever happened to ....." I am currently working in Fort Frances in NW Ontario for six months. I trust that you may be able to fill me in on this one. As I grind my way through life here in the US I hardly go a day without longing for Africa and Zimbabwe. Being from Pioneer and farming stock it is in my blood. I must be honest and admit to choking up when I think of it.

My father, Sam Gelman, stood for parliament against no other than Ian Smith in about 1968. He was a founding member of the Centre Party, which I think is the only truly multi-racial party Rhodesia ever had. I think given the time and circumstances my father had a lot of guts. I am looking for any newspaper articles, literatures, campaign posters etc which reference him and that election. In general I have started a Rhodesiana book collection, mostly pre 1920s and am looking for a partner in Zimbabwe who could help me research the role my family (Barnett Smith, Abe Gelman, Abraham Gelman and Sam Gelman) played in the history of Rhodesia and Central Africa. To the extent that I can I can cover someone's costs if they could help me.
