USEFUL FUEL HINTS WITH THANKS TO THE UNKNOWN AUTHOR

Only buy or fill up your car or bakkie in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your litre is not exactly a litre. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimising the vapours that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimises the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every litre is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a fuel truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy, DO NOT fill up--most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.
Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS!

WATER WATCH

WATER RATIONING V WATER SHEDDING.

THE COUNCIL HAS INCREASED DAILY RATION FOR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES FROM 350 LITRES PER DAY TO 400 LITRES PER DAY.

HOWEVER BECAUSE OF THE COUNCIL'S CASH FLOW PROBLEMS WATER SHEDDING MUST REMAIN IN PLACE FOR A WHILE LONGER.
BULAWAYO IS CURRENTLY USING 65 000 CUBIC METERS A DAY OF WATER WHICH RESULTS IN THE USE OF 5 TONS ALUMINIUM SULPHATE A DAY.
IF THE COUNCIL WERE TO STOP WATER SHEDDING THE CITY WOULD USE 145 000 CUBIC METRES WATER A DAY AND THEN TEN TONS OF ALUMINIUM SULPHATE WOULD NEED TO BE USED DAILY. THE COUNCIL JUST DOES NOT HAVE MONEY FOR THIS !!
REGRETTABLY THE COUNCIL MUST MAINTAIN WATER RATIONING UNTIL AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF WATER IS FOUND FOR THE CITY.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
P.O.BOX 2360 - BULAWAYO

There are no live concerts in March or April (unless something comes up at short notice) but we still have quite a lot on offer. Several have suggested that we repeat some of the operas already shown either because they'd like to see them again or missed them first time round, so from April we propose showing two operas or ballets a month, one with a supper interval, one with just the normal twenty-minute break. Here's a calendar of the events we've planned:
Wednesday 5 March at 5.15 Mahler: Symphony No.4 (Edith Mathis/VPO/Bernstei n) [DVD]
Wednesday 12 March at 1.10 More on Mahler [Michael Bullivant]
Saturday 15 March at 6.30 Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake [DVD]

Wednesday 19 March at 5.15 Mahler: Symphony No.5 (VPO/Bernstein) [DVD] Wednesday 26 March at 1.10 "Old Timers" [Peter Rollason]
Wednesday 2 April at 5.15 Mahler: Symphony No.1 - a performance conducted by Klauss Tennstedt [DVD]
Saturday 5 April at 7.00 Rossini: The Barber of Seville [DVD]
Wednesday 9 April at 1.10 "Ships and the Sea" [Peter Rollason]
Wednesday 16 April at 5.15 The Great Composers: Mahler - a BBC film on Mahler's life and music [DVD]
Saturday 19 April at 6.30 Verdi: La Traviata [DVD]
Trade Fair takes place from 22 to 26 April so the Academy is best avoided, hence there is nothing scheduled for that week.

Some details:

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake
Robert Sibson Hall
6.30 p.m. on Saturday 15 March
Booking at the Academy from Monday 3 March. Tickets: $2 000 000, free to subscribers The production, filmed at the Mariinsky Theatre, St.Petersburg in June 2006, features Ulyana Lopatkina and Danila Korsuntsev and the orchestra is conducted by Valery Gergiev. Two press comments: "The Kirov's production is breathtakingly gorgeous" (Boston Globe) - "Thirty-two swans moving as one" (Los Angeles Times). Need I add more? - except that there will be the usual supper interval so come prepared!

Rossini: The Barber of Seville
Robert Sibson Hall
7.00 p.m. on Saturday 5 April
Booking at the Academy from Monday 17 March. Tickets: $3 000 000, free to subscribers A sparkling production form Madrid starring Maria Bayo, Juan Diego Florez, Pietro Spagnoli and Ruggiero Raimondi - "A delight from beginning to end - Viva Florez!" said Opera magazine. There will be NO supper interval and the opera will end at about 10.15. There will be tea and coffee available in the interval but feel free to bring other refreshment. ..

Verdi: La Traviata
Robert Sibson Hall
6.30 p.m. on Saturday 19 April
Booking at the Academy from Monday 31 March. Tickets: $3 000 000, free to subscribers This is the famous Covent Garden production in which Angela Gheorgiu made her sensational debut. Her remarkable interpretation reached the front pages of the newspapers and led the BBC immediately to film the production which also features Frank Loppardo and Leo Nucci and is conducted by Sir Georg Solti. There will be a supper interval.

MAHLER AND HIS SYMPHONIES
Robert Sibson Hall
5.15 p.m. on Wednesday 5 and 19 March, 2 and 16 April
Tickets: $500 000.00 The series continues with two contrasting symphonies in April - No.4, which is one of the shortest at just under an hour and always one of the most popular, ends with a child's vision of heaven. No.5 is the first of the great central trilogy of purely instrumental symphonies in which Mahler branched out in new directions. It contains his best-known movement, the famous Adagietto, much more effective for being heard in context.
In April there will be another performance of Mahler's First Symphony conducted by Klauss Tennstedt in Chicago and even more thrilling than Bernstein's version in my opinion. This will be followed two weeks later by a BBC portrait of the composer and the cycle of symphonies will resume on Wednesday 7 May with No.6.

LUNCHTIME TALKS
Room 25 at the Academy
1.10 p.m. on Wednesday 12 and 26 March and 9 April
Tickets: $500 000.00 I'll be giving an introduction to Mahler's later symphonies on 12 March and Peter Rollason will follow on 26 March with "Old Timers" and "Ships and the Sea" on 9 April. We'll take a short break after that and the talks will resume on Wednesday 14 May. Most things will come to a halt the following week to make way for the

BULAWAYO MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Sixth Bulawayo Music Festival will run from the evening of Wednesday 21 May through to Sunday 25 May and will feature Leslie Howard, Michael Brownlee Walker and Jeanette Micklem (pianos), Morgan Szymanski (guitar), Oliver Cox (marimba and percussion), Ben Nabarro (violin), Tom Dunn (viola), Matthew Sharp (cello) and the Odeion Quartet.
There will be around seventeen classical concerts plus others on the lighter side from all fields - pop, jazz, ethnic, gospel, etc. The programmes will include all six of Beethoven's piano trios, string quartets, piano quartets (Dvorak, Fauré, Schubert) and quintets (Franck, Schumann and Leslie Howard), guitar quintets and much more as well as a repeat of Leslie Howard's 60th birthday Wigmore Hall concert which will comprise music by Beethoven and the whole set of Liszt's Transcendental Studies. The final concert will embrace the first performance of "Zambesi Sarabande" for choirs, massed guitars and marimbas and end with Liszt's transcription for two pianos plus soloists and chorus of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Full details will be available by mid-March and booking for season tickets is provisionally set to open on Tuesday 1 April.
Best wishes as always,
MICHAEL BULLIVANT

3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES

I would like to send a rose to the kind lady who saw me in A&E at Mater Dei on Monday with a broken arm and offered to lend the $180m to pay for Xray at Galen House since the Mater Dei radiographer was not on duty and we did not have enough cash on us. We had just managed to arrange to borrow the cash from a kind friend but this generosity from a complete stranger was overwhelming. I would so much like to thank her again.

Lucy

ROSES MUST GO TO TERRI AND GARRY PERROTTI WHO LEFT BULAWAYO LAST WEEK EN ROUTE TO PERTH. OUR COMMUNITY WILL MISS YOU BOTH SORELY, YOU MADE SUCH A DIFFERENCE TO OUR LIVES AND OUR LOVE FOR LIFE (SINCE YOU IMMIGRATED FROM THE PRINCIPALITY OF KADOMA).

GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU AND YOUR TWO WONDERFUL CHILDREN SARAH AND STEVEN SAFE AND STRONG.

THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE OF BULAWAYO

Having approached all the various places where one expects to locate an infra red lamp for loan, hire, purchase in Bulawayo without success and so, having sought the kind auspices of Mags Kriels' Daily Mirror for the loan etc. of an infra red lamp there was a response within hours of the Daily Mirror being sent out last week and in the course of the week we received no less than six further offers of the loan of a lamp and one; "we have two, one not connected, if you can connect it - take your pick!"

Such kindness and willingness to help is rather a rarity these days. BUT NOT in Bulawayo ! As a result of this we have borrowed, 0ne x 100AMP lamp, one x 150 AMP lamp and two; with a long wave generator, a mixed wave generator and an infra red/radiant heat generator 475 watts which are screw-in types and interchangeable. We have used the 150AMP lamp so far and continue to seek advice!

A HUGE - THANK YOU - YOU BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE OF BULAWAYO who offered and to those we have borrowed from. We are very grateful and may God bless you all.

Sincerely,

Tom & Sally Jones.

In case you didn't know Tel One charges have gone up by 2000% from 11 February. This means that if your last bill was $10 million you will now pay $250 million for the same number of calls. This month (February) they have billed everyone up to the 22 February and this bill has to be paid by 15 March. The NIPC has said that they approved the fees because that's how much money Tel One needs to provide a service! And what about our services like refuse removal etc that are non existent and what are those rates going to go up to when they get approved???? ???

Absolutely shocking!

Thank you for keeping our shop going. We have dog baskets and cuttle fish. Why not pop in and browse. We have an urgent appeal from our kennels for old newspapers.

If you have lost your pet please call the SPCA kennels. If you see an animal in distress please call the SPCA kennels. All too often we find animals run over and injured when a simple call to the SPCA could save their lives. Tel: 66578/66593

Hillside Dams Conservancy

Things are progressing gradually but steadily. It is looking good with full dams, while some of the grassy areas on the west bank have been cut. We are currently cleaning up the Aloe Garden. Any offers for the old Trim Track? Weekend ends are often very busy it is warms our hearts that we seem to be getting the public's support.

Could all residents who live on the boundary of the dams please contact us as we need to discuss the way forward in terms of security, firebreaks and entry gates. Please email estate@hillsidedams .com

Our most sincere thanks to several companies and families who have assisted us with donations of time, goods and advice. We know how it is today in Zimbabwe and generosity says much about the spirit and resilience of Bulawayo residents both here and in the diaspora. We hope to publish a full list of these kind benefactors next week.

Please note
We are delighted that several people have opted to have children's parties at the Lower Dam but can we request that it is cleared with us to avoid congestion and to ensure we are ready. Please contact Ian Johnston jicsjohnston@ zol.co.zw or phone 242490. The braai area will soon be undergoing extensive refurbishment and will not be functioning as such for a while. Please make other arrangements. a boom will block off the entrance to the braai area as we are tired of the problems with late evening dagga parties.
as a conservancy all animals and birds are protected. Anyone found with pellet guns or katties or the likes will be deemed poaching and will be a guest of Hillside ZRP.

Prayer for Elections
As we move closer to the elections Christians in Zimbabwe need to have a concerted push toward more personal and corporate prayer for our nation, it's leaders and her people. The following plan of action has been initiated by concerned pastors within the city

1. Each church adopting and setting aside a day of the week to pray and fast as a congregation
2. Friday Night meetings at various churches for prayer
3. Prayer and intercessory groups within the city uniting in prayer
4. Pastors and church leaders to meet for prayer (Monday 10 March 1000 - 1200 @ a venue to be confirmed)
5. A day for National prayer for all (Easter Monday 24 March, 1000 - 1500 @ ZITF Main Arena)

Prayer Focus
1. Leadership
2. Peace, justice, truth & freedom
3. The economy

This will be underlined by repentance (past) and a turning toward righteousness (future) for the sake of healing in our nation.
Please note:
This is not a political meeting. This is not an initiative by any particular church or organisation. This is a cry for Christians to unite in prayer for God to heal our nation regardless or race, colour or affiliation. If not us, who? If not now, when?

Paradise Plundered By Jim Barker.

It is the diary of a Zimbabwean family that were forcibly evicted from their Karoi farm during the highly controversial 'land grab'. It takes you back to Jim's birthplace in Malawi; Prince Edward School; Boss Lilford's farm; PATU and the Police Reserve Air Wing in which he was trained in aerial reconnaissance. It relives the emotional roller coaster of the daily challenges and upheavals: droughts, floods, the Bush War and even wild animals. It is the story of a tightly-knit family, in a close farming community, who all experienced the traumatic and often brutal farm invasions. The Barker family resisted this onslaught for eight long years before finally being evicted in 2003.

Jim allows the reader to travel with him to UK, Europe and the USA, interspersed with holidays in Mozambique, his delightful sense of humour comes out in the countless anecdotes.
