On Monday 18th Feb we had a hijacking attempt on us at Fourways. I would just like to
warn anyone travelling to Jhb to be aware of this.
We had just left Fourways shopping mall and turned onto the main road when this white
sedan came next to us with 4 Indian men in it. The guy in the back seat held a badge up
to the window, which said Tourist Police and had a silver badge on it, and told us to pull
over. They then went in front of us and pulled over onto the edge of the road. Craig just
waved and carried on as he thought we don't need help we know where we are going.
They then came back onto the road a next to us where the guy in the back seat once
again held his badge to the window and shouted at us to pull over. I then noticed that the
vehicle they were in had no licence plates front or back. As we came up to the lights we
turned left to go to the complex we were staying in as they have armed guards. The white
car then decided they were not having any joy and carried on straight. When we
approached the police they said there is no such thing as Tourist Police and they showed
us their badge which looks like a credit card and has no silver badge on.
We were lucky we did not stop, as things could have turned nasty,so beware everyone pay
attention around you when in Jhb.

BULAWAYO SUBURBS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
As we are all aware, the crime rate in Byo is on the increase, and this month alone, we have
had quite a few robberies/break- ins in Suburbs alone, A SAD TREND THROUGHOUT
BULAWAYO in these financially challenging times.
The members of the ZRP do their best within their limited resources, and therefore the aim
of our NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is to bolster the patrolling capabilities of the ZRP as and
where we are able by using members of our domestic employment who willing extend
their daily chores by involving themselves in the PATROL UNITS at various times of the day
and night where and when possible. These auxiliary services do not go unrewarded by the
members of the NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH TEAM and this appreciation comes directly from
the financial contributions received from our more diligent residents who are able to do
so. The members of this auxiliary ZRP unit are all first vetted and then attend the ZRP
training course specifically aimed at augmenting the patrol capabilities of the Police units.
Each authorised member of the SUBURBS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is supplied with a ZRP
Auxiliary Unit ID which when requested by a Resident of Suburbs must be produced in
conjunction with the corresponding National ID Card to confirm the legitimacy of the
member in question.
Therefore in order for this AUXILIARY PATROL system to work efficiently and effectively
we, as the NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH COMMITTEE are appealing to the residents of
BULAWAYO SUBURBS for the following URGENT support:
- Financial donations by the way of cash or cheque to pay the guards, and to keep the
Centenary Park Suburbs Police sub-station going with ZESA, water and rates and taxes. We
also have to keep the donated guards' bicycles in order, and to provide each guard with a
blue identifying vest, and so many more hidden costs such as torches, batteries and some
footwear just for starters.
- We are appealing for additional guards from the Suburbs Domestic's staff pool, such
as our gardeners and cooks etc. They would be called upon a couple of times a week for
only about 4 hours at a time, and be paid for it. People living in the area are most suitable
because they know who would be strangers lurking around. Their patrol area would not be
far from their residential address. A guard's presence is always comforting, is it not?
- If anyone is interested in assisting us with paper and/or printing facilities for the
notices we have to put out from time to time, anything would be gratefully received.

I would like to appeal to the good folk of Bulawayo for help for our two non private
hospitals, I spent a few hours at UBH yesterday with a friend who had fallen and broken
her shoulder (very awkward place) The hospital staff were amazing so kind, helpful and
caring
the hospital itself is spotless but they have shortages the one thing that came up was
slings. I guess it is something that is not returned , We could help by donating old sheets
which I am prepared to cut up into triangles and hem if necessary. They also don't have
any plaster of Paris bandages nor can you get with any great ease in town!!!! We were
lucky and managed to get 5 from another patient.
Anyone who has any material(old sheets are perfect) please would they phone me on

SOUTH AFRICA has - with immediate effect - relaxed some of the stringent visa
requirements for Zimbabweans intending to travel to that country following talks between
the two governments.
Zimbabwe's Principal Chief Immigration Officer Mr Clemence Masango yesterday confirmed
the latest development.
He said according to the authorities, the invitation letters or evidence of where one would
stay during their stay in South Africa were no longer a requirement when applying for a
visa."The security deposit shall be required only in respect of persons with a history of
having 'overstayed' in South Africa or whose bona fides are doubted," said Mr Masango.
He said applicants for a visitor's visa were now required to submit a valid passport, one
passport size photograph and proof of funds in form of traveller's cheques, credit cards or
foreign bank statements that show a balance of at least R2 000.
The scrapping of the stringent visa requirements are the culmination of talks between
Zimbabwe and South Africa under the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and
Security in November last year.
The announcement comes shortly after the relaxation of visa requirements for
Zimbabwean cross-border traders who now qualify for a 12-month multiple entry permit
as long as they belong to a bona fide association or a body representing small and
medium-scale enterprises.
They must also have proof of sufficient financial means equivalent to R2 000, and a
passport valid for not less than 30 days after the expiry of the permit.
Each visit should not exceed 30 days for permits valid for 12 months.
If all the stipulated requirements are met, the permit may be acquired within five working
days.
Before this arrangement, cross-border traders were treated as ordinary visitors and found
it difficult to conduct their business.
The HISTORY SOCIETY OF ZIMBABWE has existed for more than 50 years, making it one of
the oldest such societies in southern Africa. Over recent years the Society has become
centred on Mashonaland, and it is proposed to re-form a Matabeleland Branch.
- The Society aims to unite all who wish to foster a wider appreciation and knowledge of
Zimbabwean history.
- Members of the Society are not historians and the majority of members are simply
Zimbabweans interested in their own country.
- Periodic lectures, outings to sites of interest and a national annual dinner are organised
for members.
- The society publishes "Heritage of Zimbabwe", the only local journal devoted to the
history of Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries. It appears once a year.
- Membership is open to everyone.
- Your support would, therefore, be both welcome and worthwhile.

Jodie McGroarty, daughter of Young Jimmy and Ethel McGroarty who left Zimbabwe a few
years ago has qualified for the Beijing Olympics !!
Grand daughter of Jimmy (Trumpeter) and Teresa Mcgroarty of Bulawayo.
Jodie has been in Beijing for weeks competing with all the other teams and qualified for
the womens 3m. I am so happy for Jimmy and Ethel and Kyle and Fern because they have
been so supportive and it has been a long journey for all them and Jodie has made it all
worth while.

Paradise Plundered By Jim Barker.
It is the diary of a Zimbabwean family that were forcibly evicted from their
Karoi farm during the highly controversial 'land grab'. It takes you back to
Jim's birthplace in Malawi; Prince Edward School; Boss Lilford's farm; PATU
and the Police Reserve Air Wing in which he was trained in aerial
reconnaissance. It relives the emotional roller coaster of the daily
challenges and upheavals: droughts, floods, the Bush War and even wild
animals. It is the story of a tightly-knit family, in a close farming
community, who all experienced the traumatic and often brutal farm
invasions. The Barker family resisted this onslaught for eight long years
before finally being evicted in 2003.
Jim allows the reader to travel with him to UK, Europe and the USA,
interspersed with holidays in Mozambique, his delightful sense of humour
comes out in the countless anecdotes.

RESTAURANT AWARDS
Dozens of restaurateurs from across Zimbabwe converged on Wild Geese Lodge near
Harare on Sunday February 10 to attend the awards ceremony for the 2007 Zimbabwe On
A Plate and Zimbabwe In A Glass competitions.
Inn On Rupurara was a finalist in the Zimbabwe On A Plate competition, in the category
for De Luxe Restaurant of the Year, while Inns of Zimbabwe affiliate White Horse Inn was a
finalist in the Family Restaurant of the Year section.
Inns of Zimbabwe congratulates all the winners, as well as the competition sponsors - The
Cheeseman, African Distillers and The Standard - for keeping the event going despite
prevailing challenges.
Nick Mandeya, who operates Inns of Zimbabwe affiliate Adrienne's Restaurant, was named
winner of an award for service to Zimbabwe's hospitality industry - well done to him from
all his friends and colleagues in the inns family!

I'm a British journalist based in South Africa. I saw your site and wondered if you might be
able to point me in the right direction for some research I'm doing.
I'm trying to trace a Dr Sandler who used to live and work in Bulawayo. He was a
gynaecologist and president of the Rhodesian Medical Association in the 1960s.
His son Ron went to Milton school and then won a scholarship to Cambridge University. He
is now a prominent businessman in the UK
Do you know any of the family or anyone who might? Or do you know any old Miltonians?
I think Ron would have been there from about 1964 to 1971
Any advice or help would be very gratefully received. And do keep up the good work with
your website. I imagine it's a much needed splash of colour in these exceptionally tough
times for Zimbabweans.

Please could somebody give me information regarding an ex Northleigh school boy Bruce
