The HISTORY SOCIETY OF ZIMBABWE has existed for more than 50 years, making it one of
the oldest such societies in southern Africa. Over recent years the Society has become
centred on Mashonaland, and it is proposed to re-form a Matabeleland Branch.
- The Society aims to unite all who wish to foster a wider appreciation and knowledge of
Zimbabwean history.
- Members of the Society are not historians and the majority of members are simply
Zimbabweans interested in their own country.
- Periodic lectures, outings to sites of interest and a national annual dinner are organised
for members.
- The society publishes "Heritage of Zimbabwe", the only local journal devoted to the
history of Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries. It appears once a year.
- Membership is open to everyone.

Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry broke the women's 200m backstroke world record on
Saturday, clocking 2min 06.39sec at the Missouri Grand Prix long course swimming
meeting.
Coventry improved on the previous record of 2:06.62, set by Hungarian Krisztina
Egerszegi in Athens on August 25, 1991 - the second-oldest record on the books.
LOST: "Juanita" is a beige and white Chihuahua - 8 years old.
She went missing on Saturday afternoon 16th February from Clyde Road, Famona.

SPCA would like to remind the Bulawayo public that they are a welfare organisation to help
alleviate the suffering of all animals. The clinic is open to all, but, in order to assist the
lower income earners with veterinary care for their animals, we have to charge a realistic
figure to
those members of the public who are not in that category. Drugs, when obtainable, are
very expensive; fuel to run our fleet of vehicles takes a great deal of money, as you will
appreciate.
We would like to thank the Bulawayo public for supporting our shop in R.Mugabe Way, as
all funds received there enable us to continue with our work.
We are also looking for volunteers to work for a few hours each day in our reception. No
wages can be paid, but help with fuel can be provided if necessary. Perhaps there are
some bored housewives out there!!! Or retired pensioners who want to keep their brains
active!!! If so, kindly contact Margaret Bernard at the SPCA on 66578 or 66593( mid day

Thank you for your summary of life in Bulawayo and
having read it, it reminded me that Jean and I both
started in Bulawayo in 1948 which means you have
reminded us of our youth 60 years ago!
What brought it all back to me most vividly was
that in 1948 I joined a firm with offices in Agency
Chambers and as a result , since in those days the
lunch hour was between 1 and 2 p.m, I used to depart
my office and meander next door to the Exchange Bar
for my daily "bitterly cold Castle beer" from there
at approximately 1.15 p.m. I would stroll across to
Daltons Tea Room where the good ladies running it
always had a single table reserved for me, and I
used to thoroughly enjoy my soup, main course and
sweets, and then stroll back to Agency Chambers to
my office.
I would slave through from 2-5 pm and then take off
from there, along Main Street to 12th Avenue, and up
to good ole BAC for primarily cricket practice, or
hockey practice, possibly a bit of tennis or a bit
of squash and after a refreshing shower a good long
session of more bitterly cold Castles! The next
stage was up 3rd Street to Pauling Road where I had
digs with the late Mrs. Sherwell.
In due course I had the good fortune to meet Jean
queuing in front of me for tickets for the live
shows "Annie Get your Gun" and "Oklahoma" . Very
fortunately for me she eventually decided I was
quite a pleasant gentlemen and finally in 1952 we
were happily married in St Johns Cathedral at 10
a.m. on a Saturday morning, and after a small
reception and luncheon at her parents home in Borrow
Street, we flew to Johannesburg in a Dakota for our
honeymoon, the first time Jean had ever flown and
the seats in the aircraft were generously decorated
with confetti compliments of Gordon and Pat Croll as
they worked for the airlines.
From then on there were now two Tuckeys to grace
Bulawayo's 'social scene' until 1987 when Auckland
was blessed with our presence.

The good news is that the Hillside Dams lease has now been signed and we are initiating
various developments. We would love to hear from those who have ideas and who may be
able to assist.

and comments would be appreciated. If you have old pictures please do let us know.
The Hillside Dams area has been leased from the BCC by Mungrisdale Marketing (Pvt) Ltd.
with the view of creating a restaurant. This is the commercial interest. HOWEVER the
remaining 85.5 hectares have been ceded at no cost to the Hillside Dams Conservancy - a
NON-PROFIT company with a broad range of experience. Their mandate is to ensure that
the area is developed to served all members of the community. It must remain a prime
recreational venue but one with added security and restoration of existing amenities as
well as adding a number of suitable educational facilities.
It has to be stressed that the area has to be fenced and made secure - this is in the lease
of the larger Hillside Dams area and we are considering how to achieve this. We have also
taken on the responsibility for grass cutting, security, cleaning etc. All of this work will
entail costs which will have to be recouped. This means that:
We charge a nominal entry fee for those who are in a position to pay - adult, child and car
fees. This will only be implemented once the security is in place.
We will create a seasonal option where "Friends Cards" are issued.
We must also take into account the financial position of some residents. Reduced rates or
free entry will be subject to individual application. We must not exclude anyone, most
especially those who have supported the area for many years despite its problems.
Other issues that require a response include:
The issue of dogs off the leash. A difficult one but we must have rules for reasons of
public liability. In fact all dogs are supposed to be on leash according to the existing BCC
bylaws. We appreciate the desire for freedom on the part of some of our four-legged
visitors but we must insist that they are controlled at all times - on or off the leash. Please
take cognisance of other users. In the area around the tearoom ALL dogs should be on a
leash and poop-scooping must be the order of the day. We do not want to be forced into
taking any unpopular decisions and ask that dog owners don't force the issue.
It is not intended to ban all fishing in the Upper Dam. However we will need to set aside
some sections of the shore as fish and bird breeding zones. These locations will be
marked and there will be no fishing. We will be getting professional advice on what, when
and where.
For the time all boating remains barred.
The negatives aside we are now initiating several projects but these require us raising the
necessary funds or seeking donations. It must be stressed that these are donations to the
Hillside Dams Conservancy for the benefit of the community as a whole.
