The VOTERS' ROLLS ARE OPEN for inspection and for registration of voters from FRIDAY 1
Feb - THURS 7 Feb at the usual spots i.e. Ascot shops, the usual schools etc.
People are encouraged to ensure they, their mothers, fathers, grannies and grandchildren
are all registered. For this they need ID and proof of residence (water bill, letter from
landlord or employer).
Elections will be on 29th March and this is really important than we all just get on out
there and do our democratic thing.
Please help us to encourage voter registration now and participation on 29th March.
To register as a voter, a person must have a national ID (a Driver's Licence is no longer
acceptable) and proof of residence (a bill with their name and address clearly shown or
letter from landlord, parent or employer to confirm their residential address).
Voter's rolls are now open for inspection, for new registration of voters or if people wish
to change constituency, Friday 1st - Thursday 7th February .
Please note that everyone can only vote in the Ward where they are registered, so you
must know what Ward you are in and where the registration centres are (see below). This
is also the first "harmonised" election and you will have 4 ballot papers - Presidential,
Senatorial, Member of Parliament and City Councillor.
THE WORLD OF POTHOLES
1. Don't drive right behind a car as it is harder to see potholes.
2. Drive less at night
3. Dip your lights for oncoming traffic so they can see better
4. Drive around potholes
5. Cars are safer than motorbikes
6. If you have a 4X4 don't drive over potholes. Your wife, friends or someone else may
become a victim as it gets bigger
7. Drive on roads you are familiar with
8. Watch puddles
9. Don't ask council to waste resources on building speed humps
10. Set an example, by sending your gardener out with a shovel and wheel barrow to
fix your street
11. If you fix a road try small stone instead of brick, unless they are placed in properly
12. Drive slower
13. Make friends with a good mechanic!
Bryan Orford
2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH / POTHOLE WATCH
Re your pot holes.
Mr Donga is on the way out to the airport using Fife Street where it joins Robert Mugabe
Way. Mrs Donga is on the opposite side of the road on the way into town and she is
accompanied by all the little Dongas as well.
HOWEVER!!!
take a leaf out of your own book ---
If you think there's a problem in the world, you don't wait for other people to fix it. You
have to try to fix it yourself. --Jack Davis, age 11"
Why don't we take the advice and take responsibility for some of the pot holes adjacent to
our homes or premises? Filling one or two in yourself will help the Municipality, will help
other motorists and will save wear and tear on your own car.
We need bumper stickers saying "I HAVE FIXED MY POT HOLE. HAVE YOU FIXED YOURS?"
Judith
Can I just add Josiah Chinamano Road, from the corner with Bristol Roads North and
South, up to the end? Pretty much all of the potholes would swallow a sedan, so if I have
to go that way I plan ahead and use a 4WD. The combis which use this route to go up to
Sizinda don't seem too concerned about the potholes which adds to the general pleasures
of driving!
LUCY
Just to let you know of my experience with a pothole the other day. Taking the slipway
past Townsend School onto Old Esigodini Road, with the grass so high I couldn't see
turning off, I almost took out a fellow in the MIDDLE of the road washing down his bicycle
with water from one of the huge potholes! Just when you think you've seen everything.

DEON MARCUS - A VALENTINE'S DAY CONCERT
Robert Sibson Hall AT 6.00 p.m. on Thursday 14 February
No advance booking - entry by donation to the Academy.
Deon needs no introduction to a Bulawayo audience and many of you will have
enjoyed his concert in November. This will follow the same format, about an
hour with no interval, and the emphasis is very much on romance for
Valentine's Day with a programme divided between popular classics and pops.
It includes: Debussy: Claire de Lune -Liszt: Consolation No.2 -MacDowell:
To a Wild Rose -Granados: Danza Galante -Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata ~
Fauré: Romance sans paroles -Deon Marcus: Romance in E flat
-My Funny Valentine" -Selections from Elvis Presley, Richard
Clayderman and Andrew Lloyd-Webber
There will be a Valentine's Day dinner afterwards at the Roasted Berry.
Please either e-mail music@gastoerzw. co or phone the Academy
(60684/67195) to book a place. It's not possible to give an idea of price
at this stage but it will be in line with other restaurants and all efforts
will be made to keep it as modest as possible!

and starring Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazon, Leo Nucci and Ildebrando D'
Arcangelo. Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon are among the leading stars
of the new generation and I saw an article just the other day suggesting
that the former was perhaps the best soprano in the world today. Come and
see for yourself! - and admire Villazon's acting and juggling abilities as
well as his voice! There will be the usual supper interval so come
prepared!

music, much of it little known but all wonderful music and easy on the ear.
His programme is as follows: Voek: Three Impromptus, Op.7; Smetana:

MISSING SUITCASE !
I flew from Byo to Perth via the dreaded Oliver Tamper on the 17th
of Dec. A suitcases arrived in Perth with my luggage stickers on, but not mine. So
obviously nefarious deeds in JHB. This suitcase weighed 34 kilos (Mine weighed
17 kilos ) and obviously its owner is also missing their stuff. I tried to get
an itemised list of the contents but was not too successful, but it did contain
some sort of speakers, which is fairly unusual. I am hoping that its owner might
know the whereabouts of my case, which contained a variety of christmas
presents---gone I am sure into the thieving fingers of the OT crooks, but what I
really want to recover are the family photos that were in the case. Some of
these are very old and were in a brown photo album

b) 2 passport photographs
c) Your ORIGINAL long birth certificate. Or a certified copy by the Lawyers.

THANKS TO FLORABOREALIS FOR SUFFERING THROUGH THIS FIRST HAND !
Thatch Roof Owners
Many home owners do not fully appreciate the principles of a thatch roof. As a result, the
grass deteriorates over the years, leading to leaks, thinning of the roof and an unsightly
mess resembling a compost heap, particularly where trees overhang the building.
It is vital that rain water runs off the roof as fast as possible and this is achieved in two
ways.
a) The pitch must be correct in the initial construction - a minimum of 45 degrees.
b) The tips of the grass (on the outside surface of the roof) must be as close together as
possible, allowing each droplet of water to find its way down the roof from tip to tip as fast
as possible, before soaking into the roof.
As the roof deteriorates with age, these tips become distorted, broken, rot off and
separate, slowing down the progress of the run off. This allows the water to progressively
soak into the roof causing rot and eventually leaks.
With simple 5 yearly maintenance, the lifespan of your roof can be doubled, if not trebled.
( In the Uk there are thatch roofs that are 100 years old).
Simple maintenance means replacing the top ridge and waterproof layer before it starts to
leak and most importantly to rebrush (or recomb) the entire roof making a closer knit
finish, removing the decayed grass tips and getting the rain water running off, as well as
getting rid of decaying leaves etc.
This is a cheap and fairly quick job - the average size home can be done in 5 days.
If you would like further information and a free quote and inspection (Byo area), please call
Paradise Gardens on 011 402815 or 0912244855
Hi, Kim Barow (nee Booyse) here ... I was at Girls College 1988-1993 and have been
teaching there over 2 years now. There is a growing trend in Zimbabwe to build up an
interest and participation with old students. We, at Girls College, have a web site and are
developing a link from face book to our updated site. I am prepared- if you are- to keep
a closer contact, in order that old girls can organise reunions/meet ups occasionally so as
to not only update you but also to maintain the "Zim family" ways that we were used to
back then ; to give feedback ; to share our needs and create a forum where you could
discuss ways to help keep the college functioning with a vision!
I ask those of you who would be keen, to be a central link to others in your own city or
zone, and seriously consider getting an "old girls meet up" organised at your convenience
and keep this "team" regular (every 3-6 months is an easy target I guess) .. In these meet
ups, we are keen to send information or news that would be of interest to you. There are
still girls sitting at YOUR desk back here in Bulawayo!
Thank you. I do hope to hear from many of you soon,
Love Kim Barow
Ps. OBET is still in the front office and usually has Miss Garret "hiding in his pocket" (she
runs the school from MR MACS office with such passion) , while "Sekki" is still in the
cookery room and "Vena" is still in the tuck shop by the pool! Mrs Walker can still be
located in hostel or room 5, o and sports detention is still fully subscribed to !!!! Mrs Ross
(nee Lacey) will take on Headmistress in term 2. and finally, Mr Harley is still in the history
department.. I think he is making his very own history!

HEDGEHOG ALERT!
Many thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to pick up hedgehogs in
their garden and deliver them to the Neilsons or the Peeks. The Tikki
Hywood Trust reports that, although every hedgehog they received did need
some medical attention (antibiotics etc.), they now have a small breeding
nucleus. It's a start, but to make this viable, they still need more. If
you find one, please contact KEN AND BOBBY GOOSEN, who live in Bulawayo, on
0912 242 408 or 0912 234 668. They will make arrangements for them to be
delivered to the Trust.
If you need to feed them, they like
insects, mince and grated carrots and other veggies.
Thanks
L.M. RADIO RE-VISITED !!
I have just come across a year old addition of your newsletter in which you speak of Leslie
Sullivan and others who moved on to the SABC and LM Radio.
I have made contact with Leslie Sullivans widow Maria, who lives not far from me in the UK
and will going for a cup of tea.
I have also been given a recording of a show compered by Leslie and will be putting some
extracts on the LM Radio website. I'm sure you've let your readers know about the site in
the past.

News flash 2008
The Bulawayo Publicity Association wishes for its members many blessings in the year
ahead and good health and would like to quote the words of a wise person who said
"believe in working in the present and making whatever reality you have as positive and
productive as you can".
WE WELCOME ANY NEWS AND INFORMATION ON NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND COMPANIES
WHO ARE DIVERSIFYING IN ORDER TO MAKE THAT INFORMATION AVAILABLE AND TO HELP
PROMOTE YOUR PRODUCTS.
The good news is that members of the tourist industry who regularly travel overseas to
promote their products have been pleased with the interest shown in Zimbabwe, not only
from the tourist point of view, but investment as well. At least three (three) steam
enthusiast groups from Europe and United Kingdom will be to Bulawayo this year to make
the journey from Bulawayo to the Victoria Falls and to spend a few days in Bulawayo.
Recent reports had indicated that many tourists prefer our national parks and safari lodges
to the Okavongo Delta. In fact, the Botswana National Parks have been very expensive for
many years.
Sad to say, National Parks have had no option but to increase their accommodation and
entrance charges as have National Museums and Monuments. Should you wish to have
these charges, just email us on bpa@netconnect. co.zw and we will forward them to you.
The restaurants and retail facilities servicing Hwange National Park have been closed until
a suitable lessee can be found who will improve them and maintain good standards.
The NRZ has also increased its charges, but bedding has been re-introduced on first class
coaches.
BCC Bill Collection. Residents are advised that due to the high cost of postage and
shortage of staff, bills in future will have to be collected from the Revenue Hall, 8th
Avenue or the various Council housing offices. Zesa is prepared to send its bills by email,
the email being ebills@zedc. co.zw
Zimra. The new Regional Director is Mr T C Dube, who replaced Mr Mujuru recently. The
general consensus regarding signage at Beitbridge is that it has improved and Zimra is
working on the signage at Victoria Falls.
IN LINE WITH INCREASES EVERYWHRE AND IN ORDER TO REMAIN VIABLE, THE BPA HAS HAD
NO OPTION BUT TO INCREASE ITS FEBRUARY SUBSCRIPTIONS TO $7 500 000 (SEVEN
MILLION FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS), FROM $5 000 000. WE ARE HAVING TO
INCREASE OUR SUBSCRIPTIONS ON A MONTHLY BASIS, WITH THE APPROVAL OF MANY OF
OUR MEMBERS, AND KNOW THAT YOU WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT US AS GENEROUSLY
AS YOU HAVE DONE IN THE PAST.
THANK YOU

Hillside Dams Conservancy
The Hillside Dams area has been leased by a group of local residents with the aim of
restoring it being one of the principle community venues in Bulawayo. We want to restore
the existing facilities and create new ones with our fourfold objectives of recreation,
conservation, education and heritage.
Obviously the work requires strong financial support in cash or kind, while assistance in
the way of services and suggestions would be much appreciated . It is important to
remember that this is a community project aimed at benefiting all residents of Bulawayo.
If you would like to be involved in any shape or form we would love to hear from you -
please contact us on projects@hillsideda ms.com or phone Ian Johnston on 09-242490,
