2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH

I thought that what I did in my flat in BYO may be of assistance to some of the DIY enthusiasts in their endeavours to save water.

I took a piece of GI 3/4" pipe and cut it into two lengths of 2 m. I welded a T piece of 550mm at one end of each length and then hinged the remaining ends together by slotting the one and flattening the other. Then drilled a 6mm hole through the two pipes ends and fitted a 6mm veranda bolt to form the hinge. The pipes should be bent so that the hinge area is curved over the top. This will allow the bucket to hang under the hinge without touching the piping. Just check the height between the top of the bath side and the ceiling. Some ceilings may be a bit of a tight fit if the pipes are too long.

This is able to straddle the bath across top to bottom leaving the hinge at the apex approx mid bath. A 20 litre plastic bucket has a large area at the top and when hung under the hinge on a hook it will be easily filled. Baths with the wall only at the tap end will need a slight modification at the open end. This will require two brackets to hook over the inside edge to hold the piping in place. I used old garden hose cut into short lengths to push over the horizontal sections of pipe to protect the bath surface from scratches.

The plastic overflow outlet/inlet on the modern toilets are easily available and will serve to make an outlet from the centre of the bucket bottom. Onto the plastic outlet I fitted a GI 1/2" socket and then a nipple. Then a ball cock and another nipple. Onto the bottom nipple the shower rose is fitted. Voila, a shower which showers my wife and I comfortably and has water to spare.

Best regards ,
Dug Dugmore.

PETITION TO SAVE TUSKER

Tusker (or Dustbin as he is also known), is the resident Charara elephant. With his peaceful antics of raiding bins and braais he is a legend and a great favorite of tourists and locals alike. We don't want to lose him.

There has been an attempt to relocate Tusker in the past which didn't quite go according to plan and when Johnny Rodriguez (Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force) went to National Parks Headquarters and told them what had transpired, they showed compassion for Tusker and agreed that he can remain in Kariba. They won't shoot him as long as he doesn't hurt anyone; however, there are conditions to this reprieve. It was agreed that the reason Tusker has become so habituated to humans is because people feed the wild animals.
There are signs in every National Park in the country, including Kariba, prohibiting the feeding of wild animals but there are people who ignore this.

Tusker, through no fault of his own has become used to people and he has learnt that where humans are present, he will find food. We are extremely concerned about this because we have heard several stories of people feeding him and by feeding him; those people are inadvertently condemning him to death. Although he has never killed anyone, he has been classified as a "problem animal".
After his recent behavior over the 2007 Charara New Years weekend it has been decided that Tusker should be shot. This tragic event will be taking place on the 7th January, 2008.

UPDATE ON VERITY AMM SENIOR CITIZEN SOCIAL CENTRE
JANUARY 2008

Where do we start? We face challenges by the day and an ever changing backdrop.

Last year saw a huge turnover of people at the Cottages due to the immense increase in rents which forced many families to re-think the situation for their `ancients' as our family insist on calling us. With rents going from Z$3 million to Z$16 million in one jump making things impossible for many. Some have been repatriated to families out of this country and others have disappeared one knows not where, which is sad as we were achieving a feeling of a caring community.

During December many people devoted a considerable amount of their time to laying on two wonderful parties and tried to include everyone in the complex. Entertainment was provided and such welcome hampers of South African goodies, like Marmite, flour and milk powder, etc. were handed out. It seems that everything has now become a luxury.

Reading through letters written way back in 2003 the situation was similar then but has just become far worse. At that time a loaf of bread was considered expensive at Z$1 000. Now it is considered expensive at Z$1 million plus! We are now entering the realms of millions, billions and trillions! I am led to believe one adds on 3 x zero in each case. How are our septuagenarian, and octogenarian brains supposed to cope with such figures and small notes in current issue.

We have been able to shield our members to some extent from the frenzies occurring outside the perimeter where queues existed for the whole of the holidays as people waited patiently for hours on end to receive a paltry daily allocation which was not enough to provide the basics for a family let alone something special to mark what has for so many years been considered an extra special occasion.

As was the current joke, Father Christmas by-passed Bulawayo this year as it was too smelly! Ten days without water prior to Christmas and nothing since Boxing Day and we are now 4th January! It is a common sight at the Cottages to see at least one resident trundling a home made trolley laden with buckets of water from the borehole. This borehole has been considered strictly not for drinking but how can this be enforced when nothing is coming from the taps and there s no alternative. This is despite a good amount of rain over the period but the excuse is no chemicals now. The frequent and long power cuts do noting to improve the general situation.

At lunchtime on Christmas Eve it was planned to have a nice meal which was to have been chicken pillau and rice to be followed by fruit salad and a huge treat, ice cream! However, on arrival it was to a scene of great activity with creamed spinach being prepared with the luxury of a grilled cheese topping, roast chicken, cooked hams, beetroot, cucumber and curried beans and a wonderful trifle to follow so it turned out to be a feast indeed and there was some left for those not otherwise catered for on Christmas day. All this and lively music too provided by our previous Chairman, Ding Tiatco on his keyboard. This set the atmosphere for a truly memorable get together.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all the wonderful people in Bulawayo and further afield who put so much effort in to ensuring that our precious `oldies' did in fact have a Christmas to remember. So very many people were involved it is difficult to single anyone out. Not only at Christmas have our members been remembered but we have received wonderful donations and assistance generally in many ways which have enabled us to continue to provide two nourishing meals a week and we have been fortunate with volunteers from within to prepare the meals. Grateful thanks must go to all these, behind the scenes, people.

A lot of effort was put in to the Carols by Candlelight which was a very enjoyable evening but poorly attended.

Our very dedicated Administrator and Caretaker feel that they can no longer continue and we are hoping to engage the services of a couple very soon so that we can ensure the smooth running of activities for the coming year.

We wish all readers of Morning Mirror and those who prepare this very valuable circular, as good a year as is humanly possible and ay God bless us all with good health. We can no longer afford the shortfalls!!

JULIET RICKWOOD
CHAIRMAN - Verity Amm Senior Citizen Centre

The committee and the residents of Bartley Block would like to thank Trish Fenn for the wonderful donation received from the sale of clothing. This gift comes to Bartley Block in memory of her mother-in-law, Mrs. E Fenn.
We are very grateful for this gift Trish. Thanks so much.

A few days ago our dog went missing. He's a little Jack Russell cross, male, black and white with a touch of brown. He answers to "Cricket". He has a docked tail and no collar. He is missed very much by his family.
If you spot him please call us at 241254. Thank you.

Just a warning to all YELLOW number plate Zim cars going to Joburg they really are there and extremely fast and efficient CON artists.
It is a white car with three white men in who flash a 'police' type ID at you as they hoot and pull you off the road they have masked over the last letter of the number plate then 616 GP is the rest of the number plate. The ID they flash at you is like the one they use in American movies so although your brain is telling you it is not quite right before you have even had time to think you have been parted with your money!!!! I guess less that 30 seconds and it is too late!!!!!

Although it was extremely annoying having it happen to us just near EAST RAND MALL it was another lesson learned, but as a tourist in a strange land not knowing if guns are involved you sort of go with the flow!!!!! A very strange experience and dam annoying but we got away with our lives and vehicle in tact so are grateful for that. I guess we should all get together and compile a book of life in Africa, whenever anything like this happens I sort of feel, well that will be another chapter in the book I would love to write, not too sure if anyone who has never lived here would believe the stories but they would all be true!!!!!!!! !

Have a wonderful Christmas and all the best for 2008, and lets all be grateful for the wonderful rain,
Regards to all Jean Clarke

Direct Search Questions - for anyone to respond please:-
(8) Does anyone, ex ZIM or other, (SA / Brit / Hindu / Matabele / Mashona etc) have direct experiential evidence of indigenous healthcare / healing systems past or present ???
(9) Does anyone out there have direct knowledge of specific species relationships Africa / Australia - animal + plant + human ???
Examples could be :-
(10) BAOBAB of Africa is identical to BOAB of Australia. Same species and used as bush tucker + medicine / healing etc ??? Luv your pic of Matopos - similar to our Kimberleys, (WA)
(11) Termites + Other Flaura / Fauna have near identical relationships ???
(12) Indigenous First Aussies - have similar healthcare systems to do with cultural beliefs - chanting, dancing, sounds of music, herbal applications, conservation of territory, and lifestyles - pre Euro invasions of course. Examples could be found in childbirth, wound healing, infections / fevers, ceremonials and others ???

Also, for information, our BOAB tree will soon feature largely in our future film production of Australia. Luhrman / Kidman et al current post production phase in Sydney ex Kimberley WA film shoot.

Enough for now as intro, would love to follow up with more more specific article in BAOBAB MAG as could be a worthy way of reaching others. What is readership ???

Any response and feedback from yourself or your readers will be welcome, - Happy New Year and 2008,

10 a) SEEKING FRIENDS
I wonder if anybody could help me to trace a missing relative in order to complete a family tree I am doing on the surname Alborough.

My grandfather whose name was Daniel Alborough moved to Bulawayo some time after 1931 and worked on the Railways as a shunter. He remarried in 1947 to a Gertrude Katrina Richards. They had 2 sons Bruce born 1952 (now living in JHB) and Grant Stewart Alborough born 26 July 1955.His wifes name is Jillian and they had 2 daughters Wendy and Sharon. Grant worked in the post office in Bulawayo and then he worked for Nesbitts Bakery and Brewery until 2000 when apparently he migrated.

I read in your article on the 19 December 2007 that a Rory and Lee Nesbitt donated the sherry.Would this be a relative of the Nesbitts who owned the Bakery. If so is there any way you could pass this message onto Rory and ask him if he would know where Grant moved to?Surely someone must remember Grant from the post office where he was in charge of the maintenance of the exchange etc.

I desperately need to trace Grant so that I can introduce him to his stepsister my aunt who is in her eighties and lives in JHB.Any information received which leads to me tracing and contacting Grant I will donate $100 (AUS) to the edith Duly nursing home.

Unfortunately I live in Australia and trying to trace someone being so far away is difficult. By the way as far as I know Wendy and Sharon still live in the Bulawayo area

Thank you for the news it is heartening to see the spirit of the people in Bulawayo even in such difficult times. By the way every year we the Rhodesians and South Africans march down the centre of Brisbane on the 25th of April to remember those people who fought in the major wars that took place all over the world. I will send some pictures from this years march.

I have lost contact with my cousin Yvonne Watt(nee Warren/Sprout) . We both left Zim around the same time in 2003. We came to SA, and Yvonne was preparing to join her eldest son & daughter -in-law, Steve and Jacquie Sprout in Australia. They had left a year or so previously with their little girls.

Yvonne is probably now in her late 60's/early 70's. Her mum & dad, Arthur & Joey Warren were ex S.Africans who went to Rhodesia with their only child in the late 40's or early 50's. I remember visiting them around 1960 in Salisbury. Both my uncle Arthur & Aunt Joey died fairly young. Yvonne's first marriage was to Ken Sprout, an optician in Salisbury ...he was also a well known marathon walker. They had 2 sons, Steven(now in Aus with his family) and Grant, who was not married when we left Zim & who may still be there? Unfortunately Yvonne was widowed early. Her second marriage was to Don Watt, and they built a home out at lake Mazvikidei. The marriage didn't last & Yvonne moved back to Harare. When Steve and Jacqui left for Aus. Yvonne planned to join them.

If anyone knows what became of Yvonne or has a contact address/ ph nos/email add for her, or her sons Steven and Grant, pls let Colleen know at kayancee@mweb. co.za .

SEEKING MOLLY HICKMAN

Through various Rhodesian web sites I have tried to trace an old school friend by the name of Molly Hickman. I was at school with her at Hilside and also at Townsend in the 1950s. When we returned to the UK I still kept in touch and in 1968 when I visited she was married and living in Salisbury and I saw her then. I think her married surname was Gerber and she had two children. She had a younger sister called Peggy and a brother (whose name I cannot remember). So I just wondered if through your paper you could help at all. If not never mind.

Best wishes to you.

Thanks you so much for "Morning Mirror"! It is so good to be able to keep in touch with what is happening in our lovely Bulawayo.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our family, friends and acquaintances in Zimbabwe the best of health and happiness in 2008.

Keep up the good work Maggie - we really do appreciate it.

Kindest regards

I am an ex-Zimbabwean who reads the Morning Mirror fairly regularly when the emails are to me. I actually remember watching you on TV and listening to you on the radio many years ago - memories from my childhood!. I've been advised to contact you as I'm in a position whereby I feel absolutely 'stuck'.

My father passed away Zimbabwe in 2003 at Falcon College, Esigodoni. All that my Dad left in his Estate was the furniture which I grew up with and which is very sentimental to me. In particular, there is a sideboard which has been kept by a friend of mine in Bulawayo for the past 4 years and I am desperately wanting it to be sent down to me in Johannesburg. .

I have tried on many occasions to organise the transport of this ONE piece of furniture, without success. Could you possibly put the word out to anyone who would be willing to bring it down for me and, of course, would be paid in Rands. It would mean that I at least have one item which holds many memories from a time and home which I so sorely miss.

As it is only one item, it should not be a problem at the border nor require a huge van.
I really would appreciate any help or advice in this regard as it seems one loses everything unless they can make an alternative plan. I hope to hear from you.
Kind regards
Catherine Stewart

HOT WATER GEYSER

The Celesa Trust Old Age Home in Gwanda needs a geyser for one of our cottages. We have held a jumble sale to raise money to buy one, but unfortunately did not get enough as new gyesers are so expensive!! If there's any kind person out there who could let us have a second hand one - even if it needs a bit of fixing - we would be so grateful. Please contact Basil Butcher on phone no (084) 22201, or Betty Foster at Gwanda Service Station on (084) 22292 if you can help.
