OOPS SORRY BABY BOOMERS

Hi, Margaret. I just want to make a correction - St Margaret's Church was in North End - not Famona! Why do I know? Well, I was confirmed there; used to go to Girl Guide meetings there; & used to have band practices there with Steve Spiller & Co (The Trendsetters) ! Further on from that, my daughter used to attend Nursery School there, under Anez Dyason. PAM GRAVES

1) Baby Boomer Christmas Hamper continued

n my Christmas hamper I would love to find;

Those lovely greasy doughnuts filled with synthetic cream, delivered by the old Lobels three wheeled delivery bikes that called door to door.

A hot meat pie from Downings Bakery, any time of day. The really strong garlic sauce that came with a garlic steak from the Z7B A Coke float from the Coffee Pot in Kerrie Arcade. A packet of the little sugar paper cheroots that were sold by Ramji's Corner grocery shop, before they specialised in clothes and before I shouldn't have started smoking! A bunny-jacket safari suit with zip-up front (just kidding!) A voucher to the Sunday roast at the Hotel Rio. A bicycle and the energy to ride out to Sandyspruit to go fishing with mates. Last but not least a packet of those little pink sweets (I think they were called Kashoos) to throw at the stage on schools night when Eveline High was holding one of its farce presentations. Oh what memories! Colin

Pink jacaranda v Cassia Javanica

I have been following with interest the correspondence re the Pink Jacaranda/Cassia.

Nobody has mentioned that there used to be a magnificent specimen in Bradfield. It stood in Irvine Road, just off Albermarle Road. It came down during one of the vicious storms of 2004/5?

I always identified it as a Cassia. A very noble tree, I used to specifically watch for it to flower every year.

2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH

GOOD NEWS !! THE UMZINGWANE DAM HAS BEEN RECOMMISSONED FOLLOWING SIGNIFICANT INFLOW INTO THE DAM AFTER THE RECENT RAINS !

LOWER NCEMA HAS ALSO BEEN RE-COMMISSIONED WITH THE TWO DAMS NOW HOLDING 23 DAYS WORTH OF WATER ....

ALTHOUGH RESIDENTS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT MUDDY WATER, IT IS ONLY VISUAL AND QUITE SAFE.

Ingredients

2 x 15ltr buckets of borehole water 4 of the biggest pots you have that all can fit on your stove at once 1 four plate stove Zesa(optional or erratic) or fire outside

Method

1. Turn all 4 plates on your stove. 2. Fill up 4 of your biggest pots with borehole water and put them on to boil. 3. Choose the smallest bath in the house. 2. Fill up 2 buckets with borehole water (this is from the garden tap!) 3. Pour the 2 buckets of water into the bath. 4. Eat supper while you wait for the water to boil. 5. Once the energy levels are restored and the water is boiling, switch off stove and carry the full heavy pots of water to your bath. 6. Make sure you don't let the water out as it will be used for the next person to bath, as well as to flush the toilet and of course, to use for the laundry wash the next day! If you have a power cut, visit a friend and grab a bath, preferably without the friend! If all else fails, have a swim! Thanks to Cherie & Peter

Barn (European) Swallows at How Mine

The Barn Swallows are back in enormous numbers! They have returned to their roost at How Mine where they will - hopefully - sleep until their departure north in early April. Last time they left on the 14th April, without any warning, they just upped and went to where they felt the grass was greener - it probably was - and not one soul was left behind to winter here. After spending the northern summer doing their stuff - sitting on eggs and rearing the kids - the first mob (including their kids) got back to How Mine on 3 October since when the numbers have built up dramatically to what is probably now their peak . It looks as though there are twice as many as there were before because all the trees on both sides of the river are heaving with twittering bodies!

The original informal view point had to be moved, so the Matabeleland branch of BirdLife Zimbabwe has completed the production and installation of directional signs to show you where the view point is now located. This gives a very attractive wide-open view of the birds arriving from various directions. And there are two explanatory signs on migration and the Swallows' predators at the view point itself. A very pleasant way to spend an evening is to arrive at the roost around 5.30-6.00 pm with your chair, nibbles and sundowners and watch the uncountable millions of Swallows swirling far up into the air, ducking and diving to avoid being nabbed by falcons, hawks and eagles, while awaiting their turn to swoosh down and into the trees. Our Swallow Warden, Mr Laften Tembo, is there to assist and give you an explanatory leaflet.

Or you could try something different. A group of Bulawayans recently went out in the early morning hours to watch the swallows depart - another ballgame altogether and even more noisy and dramatic! The Swallows take off in controlled order, at high speed and low altitude, right over your head, to disperse to their various feeding grounds. It is interesting that none remain to feed in the roost area. The thing to do is to arrive at the view point at about 4.30 am when you will find them already fidgeting and twittering in the trees, impatient for the onset of dawn and their departure! Our 'Bulawayo' Barn Swallows do us proud - they provide a wonderful spectacle which we hope everyone will enjoy.

You may like to know that the long forgotten tradition of letter writing is effective and usually meets with a response.

For example we wrote a letter to the council regarding the ring barked tree at Hartsfield and elicited a response and some action.

We also wrote to Council on potholes that were particularly bad quoting 2 streets and, within a short space of time, both were fully repaired by Council.

My father use to always say "you get the service you demand and the Government you deserve". S.S.

KIGELIA

The development of this product took some 18 months and included the services of a French Nose who spent several months in Zimbabwe to develop the unique fragrances that relate to the fragrances of the African Wilderness.

The loofahs used in the soaps, grow wild off the tender clinging vine - the luffa aegyptiaca - in the lowveld and the Zambezi Valley. They are handpicked by villagers who live in these remote areas, and are delivered to us from as far as 500kms by various modes of transport.

The loofahs are then sun dried, peeled, washed, de-seeded and dried again. Hand selection takes place in selecting the correct size loofah to fit the mould. The soap is made using high percentages of natural oils which are poured over each loofah. We wait for the soaps to set and then each is individually removed from the mould and trimmed and polished by hand. The wrapping and packing process takes place by hand. We believe that this is what makes our product so unique - you really have a piece of Africa in your hands. Enjoy our products they are naturally a part of Africa. At present the range consists of: - Loofah Soaps Glycerine Soaps Exotic Bath Soaks Sugar Bath Cubes Endangered Guest Soaps Not forgetting our unique Earthchild Eau de Parfum Which come in six exciting African inspired fragrances - Zambezi Wild Berry - Zambezi Rain Forest - Marula and Jojoba Oil - Baobab and Tea Tree Oil - Rose Oil and Apricot -----soon to be replaced by African Love flower. - Savannah Aloe
