Addendum to

Zimbabwe Recriminations. from Chris Higginson

I put my frogs into the pail
Along with others I would flail
To teach them quick for once all
That if they in my pool do fall

I will dispatch them like the French
But not for food, just in a trench
That runs away down to the valley
And now I've got me quite a tally...

The phone rings now, where did I tuck it?
And in my haste forget the bucket
Leaving it out in the garden
Where sun bakes down the earth to harden

When I return I find the frogs
Have been abandoned by the dogs
Because they've died and now they smell
But why did they endure this hell?

They could have leapt out of the pail;
Was not secure like Central Jail
They waited as they fried in sun
Just hoping for someone to come

To save them from protracted death
They gasped until their final breath
But if I'd boiled them in the bucket
They would have leapt out: never stuck it

Perhaps that's why, when danger comes
In increments, that Man succumbs
Each little insult lessens hope
As bit by bit we learn to cope

But when assessment times arrives

Reality! We realise

That we're much worse off than before

The Peace has killed us, not the War

Chris Higginson

PINK JACARANDA ?? OR PINK CASSIA > THE BATTLE RAGES ON .....

Glad to read that more people were impressed with our one and only(?) Pink Jacaranda, outside Hartsfield. It was exceptionally beautiful this year!
Of course this tree isn't in any way related to the mauve or white Jacaranda, but it isn't a Cassia either! The scientific name is Stereospermum kunthianum, according to Keith Coates Palgrave in his tree-bible "Trees of Southern Africa". There is a clear illustration in this book, and also in the "Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa" by Braam Van Wyk and Piet Van Wyk.

The Pink Jacaranda is not an exotic import from the Far East, it is indigenous in Zimbabwe's North and East, and in a narrow central band in Mozambique. Bulawayo is quite outside the natural habitat of this tree, and it would be quite interesting to try and find out who may have had the inspiration to plant this specimen in Bulawayo, for us all to enjoy!

Would you please be so kind to pass information this on to John Minshull? Many thanks,
Ineke te Velde

Dear Mrs te Velde,
Thank you for your interest in our quest to identify the Hartsfield tree. I attach a close-up of the flowers,
http://www.morningmirror.africanherd.com/bulawayo-morning-mirror-newspaper/Pink-Cassia-or-Pink-Jacaranda.htm
taken by John Brebner.

As you can see they are leguminous flowers and definitely Cassia-like. The flowers of the Pink Jacaranda are a cylindrical tapering tube 3 cm long just like our blue Hawaiian Jacaranda all over town. The pod of the Pink Cassia is 45 cm long by 3 cm in diameter and contains flat cylindrical seeds. The Pink Jacaranda bears a slender flat pod 1 cm wide and produces many winged seeds. They are common around Kariba where I lived for 4 years. Mrs Sima Eliovson's book, Flowering Shrubs and Trees for gardens in southern Africa mentions Cassia javanica as the Pink Cassia, coming from Java and Sumatra. When I keyed out the Hartsfield tree in Coates Palgrave's book it came out as C. abbreviata, our yellow flowering Long-pod or Tsjambok-pod tree. Ken Blake told me it was a variety of abbreviata from east Africa but the flowers are different. The pink Cassia has rounded petals, while our abbreviata has pointed ones. This is all like a treasure hunt -- the search continues. I would like to get a photo of the Java tree.
Thank you very much for your input, it all helps in the long run.
Yours faithfully,
John Minshull.

When all is said and done, the only change that will make a difference is the transformation of the human heart.

WEEKLY WATER WATCH

MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS ARE GLORIOUS DAYS IN BULAWAYO'S EASTERN SUBURBS, WHEN WE OPEN OUR TAPS FOR A FEW GLORIOUS HOURS, AND WATER COMES OUT (ALBEIT A TRICKLE) !!

PEOPLE IN THE WESTERN AREAS ARE NOT SO LUCKY HOWEVER. THERES IS A DAILY HIKE, SOMETIMES OF SEVERAL KMS, TO GET WATER FROM THE NEAREST BOWSER OR BOREHOLE PUMP.

RESIDENTS OF KADOMA HOWEVER, HAVE A VARIATION ON A THEME !!
THEIR WATER ARRIVES IN THE LEGENDARY "HONEYSUCKER" NOW ANYONE WHO HAS LIVED IN AN OUTLYING AREA IN ZIMBABWE WILL KNOW THAT THE "HONEY SUCKER" IS THE TANKER THAT ARRIVES WEEKLY IN AREAS WITHOUT WATER BORNE SEWAGE, AND ACTUALLY SUCKS THE SEWAGE OUT OF AN UNDERGROND HOLDING TANK, AND TRANSPOSRTS IT TO BE DISPOSED OF IN A MOST DELICATE MANNER.

I KNOW THE BULAWAYO CITY COUNCIL IS USING ITS REDUNDANT CHIBUKU BEER TANKERS TO DELIVER WATER TO MANY AREAS IN BULAWAYO, I HOPE THEY ARE NOT TEMPTED TO USE OUR OWN HONEY SUCKERS !!

The Mater Dei Hospital will be holding a Memorial Service for all those who died in the Hospital over the past year or so.

The Service will be held on Friday 23 November 2007 in the Hospital Chapel at 4 p.m.
This will also be a Celebration and Thanksgiving for those who have lived !
All are welcome to this very special service.

SPCA APPEAL

"YOU THINK OF YOUR FUTURE - WHAT ABOUT THEIRS?"

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE OR SELL YOUR FAMILY PET TO SECURITY COMPANIES. BY DOING SO, YOU HAVE CONDEMNED YOUR BELOVED DOG TO A MISERABLE AND UNHAPPY LIFE.

1. NEVER TO RUN FREE AGAIN OR PLAY WITH CHILDREN.
2. CAGED ALL DAY - SOMETIMES OUT OF SIGHT OF HUMANS AND THAT MAKES THEM DEPRESSED.
3. ONLY WALKED ON A LEAD AT NIGHT WITH A HANDLER WHO REALLY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE DOG AS ITS "ONLY JUST A JOB"
4. IN MOST CASES YOUR DOG IS "TRAINED" TO BE AGRESSIVE BY UNQUALIFIED TRAINERS.

DO YOU REALLY WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO YOUR DOG?

THINK BEFORE MAKING HASTY DECISIONS

A DOG CALLED ALICE

Alice, a golden Labrador retriever was adopted from the Bulawayo SPCA by a loving family. She fitted in well with their other dogs and was the family favourite. Unfortunately for Alice, her family had to leave Zimbabwe and a 'good' friend took Alice as she was a young dog. Her second family, it seems, did not bond with her and looked upon this energetic dog as a nuisance. Time went by and poor Alice was once again moved on. She found herself in a worse predicament with very little food, not much love but this plucky little dog made the most of the situation, until one day in hunger, she killed some chickens.
We were called to collect this dog and it broke my heart to see her emaciated condition. She is with us at the Bulawayo SPCA where she will get food and plenty of tender, loving care. Hopefully some kind person will give her a loving home she deserves.

POTHOLE WATCH

It is the time of year when the pothole problem becomes particularly significant. Whilst Council have limited resources, they are still willing and able to honour their obligations to the rate-payer.

However, they rely on the ears and eyes of residents and also have to undertake the policy of prioritisation.

Please therefore contact your local Councillor whenever you identify potholes in the vicinity as, you will remember, your Ward Councillor is chosen by you to represent your area interests. He has direct access to and influence in the Council Chambers and close contact with the relevant working Departments of the Municipality.
Remember that this is also your responsibility just as much as it is the responsibility of Council and they need your help for them to help you!
Please see the attached document for the Councillor Contact list:

I kept meaning last week to comment on the Grand Hotel...when I arrived with my parents in 1948 we lived there till we found our feet and over the years I decorated that Macmurray Hall many a time with Terry Donnelly for the Far Eastern Ball (Kongsi Hari Bazaar) I made a huge costume for one show and went as the siamese twins with Terry both of us jammed in an outsize kimono - the Governor insisted on dancing with us as he had never danced with two women at once and asked us how we managed in the pk!! ...next one we went as an elephant complete with howdah (so we could breathe) and then the last one we went as Egyptian mummies lying on the floor in our coffins...mad happy days and such fun. I dragged the photos out to have another look - maybe I will get my son to scan them for me to send you...good ole Bulawayo..Our hearts still remain in Bulawayo !

News from the Cape

I recently returned from the Cape, having house sat for COLIN and JUDY MARTIN who visited his brother in Perth Australia. Whilst there I saw and was in touch with many ex Zimbabweans. INNES and DOUG CHADD took me to tea , and live in a beautiful retirement complex. I had many a call from LIZ HESKETH, and we spoke for ages. CALA ANDERSON and her mom JOE LITTLE spoilt me and took me to lunch a dew times, Carla has a seafood restaurant, lovely prawns were on the menu! I did not see, but spoke to JOHNNY MUNRO a couple of times, met an ex BSAP friend of his, BOB BEDDINGHAM. Wife SUE and BOB picked me up for church on Sundays. RICHARD NAPIER phoned for a chat often from Bonievale, near Swellendam, sadly did not get to see him. Was lovely to see PETER and CARO WESTWOOD, who took me to tea at Fishoek. Two houses down from the Martins is NORMA JACOBSON nee SHONE, cousin to the Rosenfels. We saw a lot of each other and had shared suppers together quite often. JEAN TUCKER who left Bulawayo last November, and is visiting her son Andy from UK and ELLA FAWCETT came and spent the day with me, both at one stage or another were in tears having left Zim and all their friends. Just so sad. I spoke with CLEM BLYTHE who had just returned from Bulawayo, so got an update on how things were not progressing back home! Had a simply wonderful day with ANTHONY and JENNY GRACE. We ate a delicious fish meal very close to the retirement home where IAN SMITH lives. He is not at all well.
The purpose of this newsletter is to send greetings to folk that may know the people mentioned, as all have asked to be remembered to you all. The Cape is magnificent, but the weather was the pits, and believe it or not I was so chuffed to be home and amongst people who in spite of all our problems, can have a joke and a laugh. Good salt of the earth people, that is why we hang in here.
NOOKIE ALPORT.

This likely comes far too late but if the gentleman Tony Seward" who was asking for informaiton regarding Hank Blowers is still interested-- Hank's son, Mike Blowers resides in New Zealand and can be contacted at blowers@clear. net.nz. He may be interested in hearing what happened to Hank's sword.

Sincerely,
Carol J. McDaniel (Hank's Granddaughter)

Does anyone have an idea who MARION BOOTH is? I have a silver inkwell of hers engraved with the following Presented to Marion Booth by Mount Tabor U.M. Church and Sunday School January 4th 1913

Dinah Beaton dinah@zol.co. zw

My name is Andrew Grahn and I am writing you to ask a favour. Although you do not know me, I was browsing your lovely pictures of Zimbabwe recently, reminiscing about your beautiful country, and I noticed a photo of Lion and Elephant Hotel. On a recent (July) trip to Zimbabwe I had the pleasure of staying at the Lion and Elephant Hotel on the road from Beitbridge. While there I made the acquaintance of the manager, Sidney, and took some photos of the two of us. I would like to send him these photos, but unfortunately I am not able to find the address. As I am from Canada I don't have access to a Zimbabwean phone book, and I was unable to find the address on the internet, therefore if you knew the address or could direct me on where to find it I would be most appreciative.

Thank-you Andrew Grahn, Edmonton Canada
