I now know the importance of "clean safe drinking water" having lost 4 kg Saturday to this morning with gastro. Not a good time considering the shortage of loo rolls and due to no farmers no mealy cobs. With my "cast iron" gut I have never had a tummy ailment that I considered only woosies got. I asked my dear and glorious physician to take away the gripes but leave the symptoms for a week or two to loose 10kg.

During the bush activities we drank some pretty foul liquids but we always put a Halazone tablet into our water bottle and shook it. Never had a problem so I guess they really worked. I really cannot comprehend your lack of water as we always have plenty, it must be too dreadful for words, especially for the likes of hospitals.
But after last weeks Carte Blanche programme and the cave story where plantations of pine trees were planted over the cave and it no longer has any water in the caves and they now look endangered, has Bulawayo the same problem.
I remember being at school in Bulawayo and all the gum trees that were planted along the river near Coghlan, Milton Jr and Eveline schools. They are very thirsty trees indeed and sure they have destroyed the water level of Bulawayo...even a place outside Bulawayo is called Gumtree!! If all these trees were destroyed the water level would rise and there would be stacks of wood for the people who are always suffering from power cuts.
Sure someone could make a good business of this maybe not for long...just a thought Hate to see the old beautiful town of Bulawayo suffer so much.

I've just read the Morning Mirror and you mention micro-waving sponges and dishcloths to sterilise them...

PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!! IT IS A SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD!!!

There was a report on this a few weeks ago on the BBC news website, including quotes from a police chief. It appears it's a habit which has become popular in the UK, and whilst it does work on germs it has caused numerous house fires, because the sponges are actually highly, and easily, combustible. If you read any microwave instruction book it will give you a list of things which shouldn't be used for cooking or heated in a microwave, and cloths and sponges are generally amongst them. The way a microwave works is by causing molecules (in the case of food and drinks, it is the water molecules which the food etc contains) to vibrate extremely quickly, creating friction which in turn creates heat. It's fine to do this with things that have either a high water content, or a stable molecular structure (ie glass, microwave safe plastics and most ceramics) but anything that does not have this structure and / or the high water content is at risk of creating too much heat and catching fire. Sponges especially are made from organic chemical compounds, and many are made from petroleum (ie crude oil) derivatives, so once they get hot, they will burn.

Put your dishcloths and sponges in a saucepan of boiling water for five minutes, just as you would do with baby bottles and even your drinking water, and they will be sterilised. And you don't need an expensive microwave, just a pot, a heat source and enough water to keep them covered whilst you are boiling them - do not, of course, let the pot boil dry. You will also be able to see how much dirt comes out of them. And if you don't want to boil them, let them soak in a solution of Jik, if you can get it.
Please, for the sake of safety, can you mention this? I don't want to be named - just don't want anyone to have a fire because they've tried this at home !!

CHRISTMAS IN NOVEMBER

Would you and a couple of friends like to make up a table, I am holding a "Christmas In November " for Falcon College at the Bulawayo Golf Club Suburbs on Friday 23rd November.
It is going to be a stunning evening I am also bringing a cabaret from Harare called the Frosty Follies (I will let your mind run wild !!) Mitzie Carruthers who is originally from Texas is putting this cabaret together and I can guarantee it will be fantastic, something not to be missed.
There are a limited number of tickets on sale, there will be dancing also and a full Christmas dinner ham, turkey beef with all the trimmings.
Men are to wear black tie and ladies in ball gowns, its been ages since Bulawayo had such a ball so this is their chance to dress up and feel good.
Guests attending are also asked to bring with them a gift wrapped food hamper these will be put under a Christmas tree, Margaret Kriel will be there to receive these items who will distribute it to the needy Old Folk of Bulawayo.

Dear family/friends

On behalf of Count on Us, I am organising a "sponsored walk" for Keano Klein please see attached photos.

Keano is two years old (in Bulawayo), who has a rare blood disorder, DD Kostmanns Syndrome & S.C.N Severe Congenital Neutrophenia. Keano is now 2 years old and has already had 7 operations (that's all that they can do for him, with the current problems they all face here in Zimbabwe). Keano lives on an injection a life saving one that is very; very costly it is $74 800 000/day (extremely expensive)

Chantelle Moore (Keano's mother) has been able to get a donation from the manufacturers, in Switzerland, with a 3 months supply.
Chantelle is trying to get Keano into Canada, U.K, Australia, New Zealand or Netherlands for further tests. Keano needs a bone marrow transplant but for now he needs to have a test (genetic test), which is only done outside Zimbabwe.
The test is to determine the origin of the disease he has, where it came from etc.
The sponsor walk will take place in South London; the walk will take place on a Sunday morning in September and should take approximately 2 hours (max), to complete. We are desperately looking to recruit individuals to participate. Do you have a few hours that you could give up for the benefit of the little Keano?
