ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC
The Zimbabwe Academy of Music has a project to set up an Audio-Visual Centre in memory of Derek Hudson. This is on-going but the first stage will be opened on Monday 15 October, 5.00 for 5.30 p.m. at the Academy. New DVD equipment will be on display (in use!) and a superb bust of Derek by Gill Kaufman in the foyer will be unveiled by his daughters. This will be a very special evening in tribute to a man who devoted half his life to Bulawayo's music.
The Academy has acquired its own marimbas and has now formed a marimba band which will give its first public performance on the lawns at 5.00 p.m. to welcome guests. The bust will be unveiled at around 5.30 and followed by the concert at about 6.00, over by 7.00, which will feature Academy pupils and teachers including some of the youngsters as well as Rose Green, Deon Marcus, Susan Moyo and Amy Wawn with Libor Novacek to round things off.
There will be a bar available before and after the proceedings and there will be no admission charge but there will be an opportunity for donations, generous we hope! So far the Academy has raised about £1500.00 and Z$3 000 000.00 for this project but we need a good deal more to implement the next phases so please remember everything Derek did for Bulawayo's music over thirty years and try to support the project.
PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
Libor Novacek (piano) at the Robert Sibson Hall on Tuesday 16 October, 7.30 p.m. at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music. Libor Novacek will be well remembered from last year's thrilling recital and PAB is delighted to welcome him back so soon -and are already planning another return for next year!
Since his first visit his new CD of the Italian book of Liszt's Années de Pèlerinage has won rave reviews and, even more impressive, it has been awarded a "Diplom d'Honneur" by the Hungarian Liszt Society - which is about as good as it gets when it comes to Liszt . It is a very prestigious award indeed and at most only four or five recordings a year receive it. Libor travels straight from Zimbabwe to receive this award on Monday 22 October.
The programme is very generous and includes Brahms: Sonata No.2 in F sharp minor, Op. 2; Janacek: In the Mists; Brahms: Eight Piano Pieces, Op.76; Liszt: Première Année de Pèlerinage: Suisse - excerpts. Booking opens at Meikles on Monday 1 October, tickets: $100 000.00 and $60 000.00 but free to subscribers and half-price to members.

There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. SELLING BULAWAYO
The Executive Committee of the BPA elected the following office bearers at its first meeting of the 2007/2008 year - Chairman Mr G Hapadziwi, Manager of NMB Bank; Vice-Chairmen Mr G Stephens, Finance Director of Unicem and Mr N Mahubaba, Manager of Old Mutual.
At the first Finance Committee meeting thereafter, the Committee studied the Association' s Cash Flow Budget for August to December 2007. This was a cause of great concern. It was resolved that membership subscription would have to be increased from 1st October. It must be emphasised to members that sheer hard work alone cannot achieve the continuing aim of bringing Bulawayo's desirability as an important destination into the public eye worldwide. It needs the necessary resources to do this. The publicity association represents all components of the city and can be the community's single most important marketing and promotional organisation.
Did you know that it was to Bulawayo that the first trains came on 4 November 1897 and this was marked by the switching on of electric street lights between the railway station and town centre It was the 6th city in Africa to have electric lights and Bulawayo had electric street lights before London did!
Bulawayo is also the only city in Zimbabwe to have high quality quantum, custom made for the tropics ambulances, currently 9 of which were purchased recently from Toyota Zimbabwe at a very favourable rate. The Director was invited to the commissioning ceremony of these ambulances, which are expected to be placed at various clinics to reduce the time to service distress calls. Plans are also underway for Council to launch an ambulance training school which will be open to regional and national trainees.
On the bright side, Bulawayo tour operators report that they are kept busy with large groups of `overlanders' whose tour of Africa either starts in Nairobi and finishes in Cape Town or vice-versa. On their journey through Zimbabwe they spend a few days at Victoria Falls and Antelope Park as well as a day and night in Bulawayo and the Matopos. This apparently has been a highlight for them as most of the tours have managed to see rhino at close quarters in the game park.
For your information, the National Parks Office has moved from R. Mugabe Way to 15th Ave, between Fort & Main Streets.
The National Railways of Zimbabwe is assisting the community by allowing residents of the western suburbs to use the commuter train to ferry water obtained from the station to their suburbs. The train makes stops at various suburbs such as Entumbane, Emakhandeni, Cowdray Park and Nkulumane. This should do much to relieve the residents' woes. About two months ago, Council erected 4 elevated water tanks with a capacity of about 20 000 litres in Cowdray Park, Emakhandeni, Entumbane and Magwegwe. These tanks are supplied with water from water bowsers.

- Your Email to Maggie Kriel's Morning Mirror brought back many memories of the Bulawayo Baths and the Good Old Days ! In my mind I can still see your Dad in his white safari suit with his well behaved little dog Scout!
This week my son took me to have a "look-see" at the Baths after many years ! Same old sturdy turnstiles - clack-clack clack ! The sign still says "Municipal Swimming Baths". They were opened in 1926 - I was five years old - I remember well the opening ceremony. My parents had been invited, and my elder sister and I went along too. My sister took me to the Loo and when she pulled the ":chain" I took off in fright quite certain I would be drowned ! Never having seen waterborne sewage before ! Our home in Devon Road Hillside had a "long-drop"! !
To get back to the pool - it still looks good and I think that it is the only one left in the City - North End and Paddonhurst pools have been closed. probably due to lack of chemicals and the cost of them when available. The water is a bit green, but does not deter swimmers of which there were quite a few on Thursday morning! I understand that the Crusaders still gather there and maybe a few of the schools are taken there under supervision? The pine trees are enormous and I gather that herons nest in them.
The diving boards have been moved from the top deep end to the sides of the pool. There is a large oval shaped paddling pool in the foreground on one of the terraces. The doors to the cubicles are still in various colours and no doubt are held in place by the paint ! ?
I think your Dad also gave private swimming lessons? My two sons in the early fifties had lessons at the Tait Knight's pool in Oxford Road Hillside? If my memory serves me right the previous Supt of the baths was a Mr Gibbs, when I was at Eveline School.? I now live in a Retirement Village called Garden Park - It is situated behind the old Race Course near Ascot. One of the ladies here by the name of Iris Sheffield is interested to know if your family lived at 94 Percy Avenue at one stage?
I would love to know if you receive this letter (Server giving hassles)! In spite of "everything" we battle on in this wonderful land - Lovely sunshine - Plenty of shortages -water, foodstuffs, electricity etc etc, but still all the lovely people (who are still here!)

Does anyone know anything about the method of keeping a swimming pool healthy by using a Solar Panel instead of chemicals? It is called a Floatron, is about the size of a Frisbee, floats in the pool, and is manufactured by a farmer in UK.
