King George VI Celebration Shows

You missed it! The KGVI celebrations shows were great entertainment from beginning to end, a great chance to relax and forget your worries for a couple of hours. Liyana band were as good as ever and with the help of sound systems from Providence the beautiful voice of Prudence Mabhena came over loud and clear. The band presented several new songs which they had written themselves, among them Children are Special about the rights of children; Peace Order about peace in the home; Sharon, a love song and Never Give Up, emphasising the KGVI theme for our 50th celebrations. Not forgetting the ever popular Umntwana weQhawe which is presently being made into a music dvd.

Other entertainment included a group of young Solo Latin dancers with their energetic dance to Liyana's song Uyabuya. A group of deaf dancers performed a well co-ordinated Jive and a signed song. A very moving rendition of You Raise Me Up was sung by Prudence who also designed the dance that accompanied it. The show opened with a short drama about disability and KGVI. The enjoyment of the performers was quickly echoed by that of the audience and the Sunday show finished with most of the audience joining the performers on the stage for a joyful rendition of The Lion Sleeps Tonight!

KGVI would like to take this opportunity to thank EVERYONE who has been involved in our celebrations, whether for the march to the City Hall or for the lunch for ex KGVI people or for the shows. Thanks to the ever generous Bulawayo public - we could not have managed it without you!

FALCON COLLEGE SPONSORED RUN - VICTORIA FALLS BY TACKIE!

In the early hours of Fri 13 ten Falcon College school boys depart Bulawayo Post Office on a non stop sponsored relay run to Victoria Falls. Running for 55 hours, through 2 nights they will arrive at the Rest Camp in Victoria Falls at 9am on Sunday 15th. Each boy will be running the equivalent of a marathon and cycling the same. Sections near the Hwange National Park might be run a little faster than intended, especially at night!

Of course, it is all about raising money. In November/ December this group, which is part of the College's Woodsmoke club, are off on an expedition to the Ethiopian highlands where amongst other things they will ascend Africa's fourth highest mountain, Ras Dashen. Previous members of the Woodsmoke club successfully climbed Mt Kenya and Kilimanjaro in 2002/3. This group have taken part in small expeditions to the Chimanimanis, Mt Mulanje in Malawi and to the Drakensberg.

The boys are after financial support for their adventure, but are very conscious that they are fortunate to be able to do these things. Accordingly they have committed themselves to donating 20% of any funds raised to organisations helping those in difficult situations, namely King George VI Memorial Children's Centre(in their 50th year), SOAP(save our old age pensioners), Whitehead/Trollope Foundations and local Esigodini causes. If you feel inclined to help the boys in their expedition fund raising and indirectly the above organisations, please contact Will Randle at Falcon College, PO Esigodini, Zimbabwe. Tel 00263 88 427/331/332. email wrandle@falconcolle ge.com or wrandle@zol. co.zw The team thanks those who dipped into there pockets during the College's junior rugby festival. They are also most appreciative to WILD HORIZONS of Victoria Falls, GALAXY TRAVEL of Bulawayo, and QUIET STREET ANTIQUES of Bath, England for their support.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
P.O.BOX 2360 - BULAWAYO

This is a newsletter that is NOT about a concert! - though it is very much about the Academy of Music and Bulawayo music.

As many receiving this will already know, we plan to create an audio-visual centre in memory of Derek Hudson at the Academy and we hope to open the first stage at the same time as we unveil a bust by Gill Kaufman that will keep Robert Sibson company in the foyer. Provisionally this is set for mid-October.

I realise that now is hardly the best time to start fund-raising but there again when will be a good time?! We have decided at the Academy that we want to make an effort now, partly because we already have some sterling in donations and money that we have raised, partly because it's already eighteen months since Derek died and we would like to have something in place while his memory is still fresh.
In brief we have a three-stage plan which is:
- Stage 1: to convert the common room next to the library into an audio-visual room with facilities both for individual study and listening and small groups of up to 12-15 for talks, lessons, DVDs, etc. This will also involve the provision of proper black-out facilities and security - and we would also very much like to repaint the room! - Stage 2: to acquire a DVD projector and screen so that DVDs can be shown to larger groups in Room 25. Again black-out facilities will be required. - Stage 3: to make it possible to show DVDs in the Sibson Hall to a larger audience which would require another, larger screen and a projection point for the DVD player. We would also like to acquire a "snake" which would mean that any concerts requiring amplification, electronic instruments etc. could be plugged in directly to power in the control room. Taken together these plans will cost a good deal of money and not all of this will be possible in the short term but we hope that the first two stages can be achieved for no more than £2000 plus a certain amount of local currency (it's impossible to put a figure on the latter as it will change every day!) and our aim is to complete them by the end of this year.
The Academy has considerable resources in the shape of a very well-stocked library which we plan to make much more accessible. We have been given several hundred audio tapes by Maureen Stewart as well as CDs by Maureen again and Avril Pinchen (sister of Keith whom some will remember), and we have received an anonymous donation of a small CD player. We already have video recorders and televisions but the latter are small and we don't have any other CD players and no DVD players at all. So the priorities are more CD players, a DVD player, a DVD projector and a large television. (It should be noted that the DVD operas shown in the last six months have been on borrowed projectors and we're very grateful to Rick Kriel and Fr.Nigel Johnson for making them available- but it's now time we tried to be self-sufficient! )
All of these items will be invaluable to the Academy - and to PAB as well. and I'm sure that the Principal of the Academy and the Chairman of PAB will be able to come to a mutually satisfactory arrangement about access to this equipment! A DVD projector would mean that we can show operas, concerts, musical films and more on a much more regular basis. So, in addition to paying tribute to the memory of someone who served Bulawayo's music so well for thirty years, there is a degree of self-interest involved!
The Academy is now actively seeking support. It currently has about £500 earmarked for this project and we are appealing to all those who at any stage have had connections with the Academy for donations. And we are also asking all those who enjoy music in the Academy's hall to support us and - equally important! - to spread the word to all those who attended BPO concerts under Derek's baton as well as the many other events he organised. In recognition of this and of many years' co-operation with the BPO and the Academy, I hope that Performing Arts will be able to make a significant contribution to this appeal.
Donations in either Zimbabwe dollars or foreign currency will be more than welcome: for the former cheques should be payable to the Zimbabwe Academy of Music and full details of what to do with foreign currency donations are available from either me or the Academy office. The Academy intends to have a separate donor's board commemorating this appeal, probably in Room 25.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
P.O.BOX 2360 - BULAWAYO

ANOTHER NIGHT AT THE OPERA!

... or, more precisely "at the Operetta" on this occasion as Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld will be our next DVD evening. It will be shown on FRIDAY 3 AUGUST at THE ROASTED BERRY starting at 7.00. (The Roasted Berry is on the corner of Park Road and Sixth Street with the entrance on Park Road.) Orpheus lasts about two hours so, with the usual dinner interval, should be over by 10.30. Please feel free to come earlier and have a drink before we start - and if you want wine, etc., then bring you own. The Roasted Berry is not licensed but is more than happy for you to bring your own drinks. They do, of course, have a variety of soft drinks plus excellent coffee in many forms!

Space at the Roasted Berry is limited and we need to confirm precise numbers quite well in advance so please book early to be sure of a place. With the current fuel problems, no one wants to make a special journey and you can reserve seats by e-mailing me (music@gatorzw. co.uk) and paying on the evening. You can also buy programme-tickets at the Academy if you're passing and we shall have them on sale at Peter Martens' recital - which is a good cue for a reminder!...
TUESDAY 24 JULY : PETER MARTENS (CELLO) AND JEANETTE MICKLEM (PIANO)
- Robert Sibson Hall - 7.30 on Tuesday 24 July 2007 - Booking at Meikles : tickets: $50 000.00 and $30 000.00, free to subscribers and half-price to members
The programme is: - Bach: Cello Suite No.3 in C major, BWV1009 - Schubert: Sonata in A minor, D.821 - Arpeggione - Franz Xaver Mozart: Grande Sonate in E major, Op.19 - Chopin: Introduction and Polonaise brillante, Op.3
DEREK HUDSON
I've now seen the clay model for the bust of Derek and it is looking very good indeed. I know that we are going to have a fitting companion for Robert Sibson in the Academy foyer! We've had some generous responses to the appeal for the Audio-Visual Centre in memory of Derek and have over £500 which, added to money already ear-marked for this project, means that we shall shortly be in a position to set up the first stages so we are planning an opening and bust-unveiling on Monday 15 October. However, we still need a lot more to realise our plans in full so please think about contributing to this fund - both sterling and local currency are very welcome!
Best wishes as always, MICHAEL BULLIVANT

Great Perseids METEORS !!!

July 11, 2007: Got a calendar? Circle this date: Sunday, August 12th. Next to the circle write "all night" and "Meteors!" Attach the above to your refrigerator in plain view so you won't miss the 2007 Perseid meteor shower.

"It's going to be a great show," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center. "The Moon is new on August 12th--which means no moonlight, dark skies and plenty of meteors." How many? Cooke estimates one or two Perseids per minute at the shower's peak.

My medical,(Northern) will cover the surgeons fees/ hospital/etc but will not supply the R37000 that Mr Ncube's office requires before I go into hospital.

As far as I know the implant is manufactured in the U.K. If any verification is needed you can contact Mr. Ncube's office .or my Medical Aid Northern (Mrs Makan) Lynn lynn@tagsafari. co.zw

I would like to make contact with an ex Bulawayo friend, Rose Reid whom I believe is in the UK or somewhere in Europe.

She lived in Famona (in a semi detached d/storey house) in Matopos Rd. with her father and brother. I believe her father moved to SA, Durban? I think her brother's name was Brian, not sure. She was going out with Alistair (can't remember his surname) At some stage she lived with Alistair above 'Broadway' superette, 12th Ave.

Alistair worked at Ferrobrake.

She must have left Bulawayo 15 to 20 yrs ago. Her uncle, Dave Lamb was still in Bulawayo not so long ago. He gave me a contact number for Rose's aunt in Harare but I do not remember her name nor number. If anyone has any information/ contact numbers, e mail addresses of Rose's relatives please contact me in Harare tel 301152, 023 814 189, 0912-324 287 or e mail me on ziminter@telco. co.zw Will be most grateful. Thank you Milu

Some years ago I had a present from some friends in Zimbabwe that gave me a beautiful elephant leather briefcase. Unfortunately I think they have left the country because of the problems you have. But anyway we had our house flooded by heavy rain some weeks ago and the briefcase was destroyed.

I search elephant briefcase on Google and found your website. Could you tell me if it's still possible to purchase a briefcase like this and how much would it cost?

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

Kind regards Jim Groser jim@nytsmil. dk

Dear Mrs Kriel I am looking for an antique queen size bedroom suite. I would like the bed to have a foot and headboard of solid wood, no padding. I do not mind if the head board, chest of drawers and dressing table don't match as long as it is solid wood. I have my name down with other people, but perhaps you could help me! I am interested in antique things. Best Regards Paula-May Mackenzie elohim@zol.co. zw
