BULAWAYO WATER SUPPLY SITUATION
UPDATE REPORT AS AT 23 MAY 2007

INSIZA DAM 47.11% AND WILL LAST UNTIL NEXT RAINY SEASON BUT IS GRAVITY FED AND HAS VERY LIMITED OFF-TAKE.
Inyankuni 11.65% TO BE DECOMMISSIONED IN OCTOBER
Lower Ncema 17.73% TO BE DECOMMISSIONED IN AUGUST
Umzingwane 2% TO BE DECOMMISSIONED MID JUNE
Upper Ncema 1.6% ALREADY DECOMMISSIONED !

TARGET MONTHLY CONSUMPTION 90 000 CU MT PER DAY ACTUAL CONSUMPTION 120 000 CU MT PER DAY

N.B. UMZINGWANE HAS TO BE DECOMMISSIONED MID JUNE MUCH EARLIER THAN ANTICIPATED. ... LOWER NCEMA WILL BE DECOMMISSIONED IN AUGUST. ONLY 69,000 CUBIC METRES A DAY WILL BE AVAILABLE AGAINST A WATER DEMAND OF 129,000 CUBIC METRES A DAY.

CONSUMERS WILL THEN ONLY BE RECEIVING 50 PERCENT OF THEIR NORMAL SUPPLY. WHEN INYANKUNI IS DECOMMISSIONED IN OCTOBER, THEN AVAILABLE SUPPLY WILL ONLY BE EQUAL TO 46,000 CUBIC METRES A DAY. THIS ENTAILS SUPPLYING THE CONSUMERS WITH ONLY A THIRD OF THE NORMAL SUPPLY. HENCE, AT THIS STAGE, IT'S UNLIKELY THAT CONSUMERS IN HIGH-LYING AREAS WILL RECEIVE ANY SUPPLIES AT ALL. WATER DELIVERY TO THESE AREAS WILL THEREFORE BE THROUGH WATER BOWSERS THAT ARE ALREADY IN SHORT SUPPLY.

Every drop counts. Report all water bursts to: 60408, 65573, 413419, 484833. After hours: 77331, 72161.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO P.O.BOX 2360 - BULAWAYO

As already announced, our next event (the eleventh this year!) will be a DVD opera at the Bulawayo Club:
FRIDAY 15 JUNE at 6.00 P.M. : PUCCINI'S TURANDOT
Turandot was Puccini's last opera and is, of course, the home of Nessun dorma - though you have to wait until Act III! It contains a lot more glorious music in Puccini's typical style as well as something very different in the exotic Chinese influences. For my money it's his best opera and this is a truly spectacular production from the Met in New York directed by Franco Zeffirelli with Eva Marton as Turandot and Placido Domingo as Calaf.

The opera last a little over two hours and the intended timetable is as follows:

· Bar opens: 5.15 p.m. · Turandot Act I: 6.00 p.m. · Interval:: 6.40 p.m. · Turandot Act II: 7.00 p.m · Dinner: 7.45 p.m. · Turandot Act III: 9.15 p.m. · Finish: 10.05 p.m. The Club has guaranteed that it will produce a good dinner that is value for money and the anticipated cost is $300 000 per head. I think this is very fair as a three-course dinner elsewhere in Bulawayo ten days ago was over $400 000 and prices are now rising by several per cent a day. Ticket/programmes with cast list, full synopsis etc. will be on sale at the Club and the Academy from Wednesday 6 June.
COMING SHORTLY!
You may recall that there was talk of a Spanish tenor in June and that we were awaiting details. There still is and we still are! - but we hope that this concert will materialise in early July. Two further dates have already been confirmed in earlier newsletters but are repeated below and we can add two more as follows:
FRIDAY 29 JUNE : THE BULAWAYO PHILHARMONIC CHORUS
This will be a programme on the lighter side and full details will follow in the next newsletter
TUESDAY 24 JULY : PETER MARTENS (CELLO), JEANETTE MICKLEM (PIANO)
Bach: Cello Suite No.3 in C major, BWV1009 - Schubert: Sonata in A minor, D.821 - Arpeggione Chopin: Introduction and Polonaise brillant, Op.3 - Franz Xaver Mozart: Grande Sonate in E major
TUESDAY 16 OCTOBER : LIBOR NOVĄ?EK (PIANO)
The programme will include music by Brahms and Liszt
SATURDAY 1 DECEMBER : CHRISTMAS CONCERT
The Choirs of Convent High, Girls' College and CBC with the BPO and Chorus The programme will include Vivaldi's Gloria, carols and other Christmas music.
That's by no means all we have in mind as we're intending to make it at least twenty concerts and other events this year! We're hoping for Walter Klauss (organ) in August, the return of the French trio in November and planning a Music Under the Stars at a cleaned- up Hillside Dams in September - as well, of course, as more DVD operas and concerts, including Otto Klemperer conducting Beethoven's Ninth.
TWO LAST THINGS
Attendance at concerts isn't always what we hope for. We're very aware of the constraints, most especially the horrifying cost of fuel, and we do our best to keep costs as low as we can - ridiculously low, some say! I'm sure that power cuts and winter weather don't help either but we have had several truly outstanding concerts this year, most recently Barbara Fusco's last Tuesday (which I think everyone who was there agrees was quite as good as I had promised it would be) but none of them has been full, several less than half full - which is a touch dispiriting for both the committee and the performers. If everyone who receives this letter came with their other half or a friend, then we'd be turning people away! Please make an effort to attend concerts and spread the word since we also still get complaints that "we didn't know it was on".
And THE SQUEAK! Several were as irritated and mystified as I was by a persistent squeak during the first half of Barbara Fusco's concert - and the one by the French trio earlier in the month. I've had several theories and no answers - it certainly wasn't the piano's sustaining pedal and general opinion is that it was coming from towards the back on the audience right of the hall. If anyone can shed any light, we should be delighted to hear from you, tempted, indeed, to offer a small reward!
And one last thought: today, 2 June, is Elgar's 150th birthday - so why not sing a quick chorus of 'Land of Hope and Glory'?! But I'm hoping that we can celebrate the occasion rather more meaningfully with a DVD of The Dream of Gerontius before the end of the year....
Best wishes as always, Michael Bullivant

The talk will be given by Mr. Paul Hubbard, a local archaeologist and heritage consultant. He will be talking on recent archaeological work done on the Later Stone Age of the Matopos, looking at questions like: How did people live then? Where did they live? Why? How long did they live there?
Come look, listen and maybe learn a little something you didn't know about our history and heritage.

Presents The Batoka Banquet
Join us on a journey to The Smoke that Thunders for an elegant night out enjoying fine food and wine, exceptional entertainment, and the chance to win a Jeep Cherokee 3.7 Sport

The roar of the mighty Zambezi River tumbling over the Victoria Falls beckons you to come and experience the true warmth and hospitality, breathtaking beauty and gastronomic delights on offer.

Join your hosts at Victoria Falls Primary School on the 23rd of June 2007, for a banquet under the stars in aid of the revolutionary Bridges of Hope - Aids Awareness programme and the Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit, and their quest to reform poachers by offering an educational alternative to earning an income.

The basic principle of the "African Banquets" is to highlight that Southern Africa is home to many of the finest chefs and internationally recognised game lodges and tourism establishments offering world-class food and hospitality. To this end these tourism establishments are invited to take part in a culinary challenge of the highest order and are judged by some of the finest and best-known culinary judges from Southern Africa and abroad. Lodges such as Elephant Hills, Ilala Lodge, Masuwe, The Kingdom, Mowana and many more from around the area will be participating in the challenge that has put Southern African chefs on the map. Lodges are required to design a menu, choose wines, set and decorate their tables, then - limited to the elements of fire, water and ice, prepare and present a three-course meal then present it to their guest, during an evening of gastronomic delights accompanied by a high class entertainment. Tickets have been quoted in South Africa Rands starting at ZAR1000. For more information or to book, please contact Billy St John

4) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES

If roses are being given out, I would give one to the Bulawayo Fire Brigade. When our house was threatened last week because sparks from the neighbours' fire had landed in our palm tree, the fire brigade arrived (in Suburbs) in about 5 minutes and stayed one and a half hours until every last bit of smouldering in the tree was extinguished. I was most impressed with their efficiency and their friendly concern. Pat Townshend

OPERATION NOAH

SEEKING OPERATION NOAH SURVIVORS
I noted in this weeks' Mirror columns the passing of Barry Ball (ex Rhodesia Dept of Parks & Wildlife) I worked with him for several years on Operation Noah at Kariba but over the years and now back in England have lost touch with pretty well everyone. I just wondered if, through your column or even from Barry's family or Mike Bromwich the writer of the notice, the whereabouts is known of any of the other guys who were also involved then? Tommy Orford, Tinky Haslam, Mike van Rooyen, Boyd Reese, Stuart Klarsens, Peter Jones, Dr Graham Child, Frank Junor, and Greg Gregory. I did read that Archie Fraser, the Director of Parks and Wildlife at the time who masterminded Op.Noah was awarded the Cresta Wildlife Oscar in '93 (for great individual contributions to Zimbabwe's wildlife conservation. ) Bravo!

HOLLAND & REDFERN AUCTIONS

Whilst we are confident that the article on "Auctions" (Morning Mirror 240) does not apply to us, we would like to reassure customers of the following :

We always try and secure the highest possible price for our Sellers. If we are not happy with the price offered at Auction, the item is not sold and will go on auction the following week, or it can be sold "out of hand" for a higher price.

We do not accept reserves but if a Seller gives us an estimate of what he/she is hoping to get for an item, we contact them after the Auction and let them decide if they want to accept the price we achieved or not. The auctioneer will indicate "Subject to Confirmation" at the time of sale. The price bid for an item is the price that is recorded on the Auction sheet and the price on the buyer's invoice. Our auction sheets are open for inspection should any Seller wish to clarify prices. Tippex is banned from our offices!
Members of staff and Auctioneers are not permitted to bid for anybody. All proxy bids are written on the Auction sheets and the person writing the Auction sheets does the bidding - again open for inspection. We pride ourselves on being honest and responsible for other people's goods. If customers are not happy with our service we urge them to tell us and not their friends.
