Report on a recent trip to Hwange National Park
Some time last year Morning Mirror kindly carried a report on the work being done on various pans within Hwange National Park involving Parks and Wildlife Management staff, Friends of Hwange and WEZ. On a recent trip to Hwange, mainly in the Main Camp area, it was very pleasing to see some improvements had been carried out. Some maintenance work has been done on the tar road through to Nyamandhlovu and there is good water at both Dom and Nyamandhlovu, both stations being maintained and pumped by Parks and Wildlife Management. At long last the septic tank at the platform's toilets has been covered over with a substantial concrete lid. Proceeding up to Shumba, Guvelala had fair water as did Shape. Although Shape is not being pumped at the moment, we are hoping to be able to get an engine installed there shortly. The windmill at Shumba is working very well and the pumped pan was brim full. The Shumba area has obviously experienced some late rain and there were several smaller natural pans still full of water.
Makwa has good water and several of the natural pans in that area still hold a small amount of water. Sinanga water point had not been pumped for some time but while I was in the area, an engine was delivered there together with two pump attendants and set up, so water was, once again, flowing down into the pan. Kennedy One's windmill is not as successful as the one at Shumba but will be used in the wet season. At present the engine there is kept pumping with the assistance of Friends of Hwange. The same applies to the pumped pan at Kennedy Two where there has not been a resident pump attendant for a while. Ngweshla pan also holds good water and the diesel there is supplied by Wilderness Safaris and kept pumping 24 hours a day. The leaky roof of the one rondavel at the picnic site has been re-thatched and although there's been a start on the entrance gate thatch, this is not completed yet. Fortunately both the Kennedy One and Ngweshla picnic sites have excellent camp attendants at the moment who are very enthusiastic and keep a clean and tidy camp.
Overall, there is still good grass cover in most places that we travelled and water was generally fair. All the animals we saw were in prime condition and it was lovely to see so many young.
There are many plans afoot for on going improvements within the park and the continued co-operation between all parties is most important. WRITERS - HELP NEEDED!
I am currently collaborating on a project with the highly talented ex-Zimbo artist, Lawrence Kirstein. Together we hope to produce and publish a quality coffee-table book about southern Africa. Essentially, it's an African odyssey that takes in a little of the environment, culture and heartbeat of the region - all interwoven within a story of the meanderings and experiences of a herd of elephants. It portrays their epic travels through these parts at a time in our past when elephants were able to range, with relative ease, across the land. The story is loosely divided by geographical region, with the author's words being supported by appropriate illustrations.
With feedback and advice received from a variety of experts, a consistent message has emerged; their suggestion is that the book's format lends itself to the incorporation of interesting, factual, or lesser-known anecdotal recollections peculiar to the places/ situations being described. Such chronicles, they propose, should be strongly considered as both complementary and supplemental to the story.
I am therefore looking for ordinary folk who would like the chance to have their short story included in the finished publication.
The essays must not be longer than 2000 words.
Obviously I cannot guarantee that YOUR work will be used, but require each author/ess to waive any future claim to compensation if published. You will however retain the copyright on your work and this would reflect as such if reproduced in any format. This gives you the opportunity to see your written efforts in print, without having to face the rigmarole of finding a willing publisher!

The How Mine Barn Swallows have gone, they're heading for Europe in anticipation of summer there (lucky things) and winter here. They were there last Thursday when we went to check on things but left the next day. We don't accept the insinuation that their departure had anything to do with the just-installed new signs featuring lifelike pictures of the birds of prey that eat them, and showing the migration map of how to get out. It's merely an example of how someone senior in the roost makes a snap decision and the whole bang shoot just ups sticks and departs - actually on this occasion they left the sticks behind. We look forward to welcoming them back with their new offspring in September.
If anyone would like a copy of our (free, of course) all-singing- all-dancing Barn Swallow leaflet, designed and produced by Matland in Bulawayo, with full colour pictures by our own in-house artist, just give me a ring.
As a matter of interest, it also seems that most of the European Bee-eaters have gone, as have the Willow Warblers, and the Kites apparently pushed off without a word. Ah well, it's rush hour so winter must be on the way.
