LIYANA (it was raining in Sweden)!
Sitting at the very back of a theatre in an industrial town in the
far north of Sweden are two Zimbabweans. As the show begins we
watch
the audience anxiously for their reactions. As the music starts
our
feet automatically start tapping, our heads nodding but the
audience
are still - how can they not respond to that beat? We have been
told
that Swedes are not spontaneous and are not able to show their
feelings - perhaps it is all that snow! But wait, is that a head
nodding over there and surely we can feel other feet than ours
tapping the floor. Song follows song getting livelier as the
programme progresses. Whispers are heard as Energy pounds on his
marimba, his sticks moving so fast they become only a blur;
laughter
as Goodwell reaches deep deep down to produce the bass note for one
of the songs; awed silence as Prudence's voice fills the theatre
and
her Ndebele clicks echo in Swedish ears. What is this, are there
people moving in their seats, has Tapiwa got them waving their
hands
in the air? Finally the ice melts and we relax as 400 Swedes stand
on their feet and dance to the rhythms of Zimbabwe! The band is
called back for an encore and the Guantanamera remix gets everyone
down in front of the stage gyrating, dancing, clapping, shouting..
enjoying!
What were we doing there? We travelled with Liyana, the King
George
VI band whom many of you will have seen at some of our shows in
Bulawayo. The tour of Sweden, Netherlands and Belgium was the
prize
that Liyana won at the international Music Crossroads competition
held in Maputo earlier this year. The tour was a wonderful
experience both for the band and for the audiences of the 30 odd
shows, sometimes 3 in one day! There were many aches and pains and
problems but no band member missed a single show. The band is now
back better than ever before and ready to entertain Bulawayo
audiences once again! (Incidentally, impressions of Sweden - I
never
sat in an uncomfortable chair and I never saw an unattractive girl!).

Each year the public have been wonderfully generous, donating
groceries, goodies, unwanted gifts and clothing which we divide
into
parcels and delivered to the pensioners.
Sadly, most of the team supporting Ilona have left the country.
This is such a worthy cause - please anybody willing to help raise
funds and collect suitable items for the oldies, contact Ilona,

desperately needs some help.

SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
BEWARE OF UNSCRUPULOUS DOG BROKERS
The SPCA is appealing to people not to give their unwanted pets to
strangers and rather work with the SPCA. Several dog broking cases
have been reported where hundreds of dogs given "free to good
homes"
have ended up as security dogs. For example a Malawian source has
reported that truckloads of dogs are arriving from South Africa.
Every dog traced so far has turned out to be a former pet which has
been given away by its owners. These dogs have been traced because
they are wearing microchips.
We beg people to consider what the fate of their pets might be when
they simply give them away on the assumption that they re going to
a good home. These dogs are living, feeling creatures and are
totally
vulnerable when they fall into the hands of those who couldn't care
less about them Do our animals not deserve a little compassion
and
respect?
Many of the dogs were German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Boerboels
and were not suited to working as security dogs as they had been used
to being family pets.
A man has been arrested under the Animal Protection Act in
connection
with the transport of dogs. He apparently responded to adverts
offering dogs "free to good homes"
Handing over a dog to an unknown person seems a most unworthy act
on
the part of people who claim they care about their animals.
Please contact the SPCA if you are unable to keep your pet or are
leaving the country. It is a much better alternative than you pet
being bewildered, unloved, uncared for and possibly ill treated.

'IN THE SOLITUDE OF COTTON FIELDS'
(Dans la Solitude des champs de coton) a French theatre play with
English surtitles, based on the play written by Bernard-Marie
KOLTES
and performed by the congolese theatre group 'LES BRUITS DE LA RUE'.
'IN THE SOLITUDE OF COTTON FIELDS' is the most recognised pieces
from
the works of Bernard-Marie Koltes (1948-1989). Written in 1986 and
published in 1987 the play has been directed by several theatre
directors including the congolese director Dieudonné Niangouna.
The story itself is a little uncommmon : 'One night two men meet in
a
certain place. Soon, they confront each other. Nothing is known of
these two men, except that one is 'the Dealer' and the other
is 'the
Client'. The dealer is calm and gentle. It is him who approaches
the
Client. The Client is a tormented soul. He is unpredictable,
agressive, and if the round-about speech of the dealer irritates
him,
well, he is equally able to do the same to him.
The two men define each other, in Koltès's simple, yet polished
style. All humanity and brutishness is concentrated in these two
men.
Feminity confronts brutality, friendship has to face agression.
Throughout the play, nothing is really resolved, fear and suspicion
remain ; everything is set to happen again, another night, perhaps
somewhere else, without doubt, during the following day in the
same
place...

THE SUPERINTENDENT WAS Mr Bridger, they stayed in the house just on
the right as you go into the pool. The Kiosk which your photo shows
in true 'Zim style' used to do great hamburgers i remember,and what
about the roller skating rink?
that used to be popular at one time,though my best memories of
roller
skating in 'Bully's' was at the old Tatersalls Hall in Lobengula St
with the guy with the 'rubber legs' Reg O'Leary,who with Pam
Thomson,
was also one of the top 'dancers' in Byo at that time at the
Dancer's
Mecca which used to be above one of the wholesalers opposite the
'Police Factory' in Fife St. Ah the days gone bye,not bad days and

The BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION has undertaken several
promotional
exercises this year which included the organising of workshops at
which representatives from selected South African hotel groups and
South African airlines gave presentations of their products to the
travel agents and their clients. These proved very successful. It
also had a stand at the recent Travel Expo in Harare where Bulawayo
was promoted as part of a package deal together with Hwange Game
Reserve and Victoria Falls to many interested international travel
agents.

The Chairman and Committee of The Haven (shelter for Abused and
Battered Women and their children) wish to thank all the extremely
generous donors of toys and clothes which they have kindly given us
for the victims of abuse and their children. They arrive at the
home
with nothing and some are heavily pregnant. They are housed, fed
and
clothed and treated by our friendly doctors who do not charge for
their services. They are also given counselling. Once again thank
you all very much indeed. At the moment we have no office for our
Secretary so we are unable to thank each one of you personally. If

Whitestone School celebrates its 65/25th Anniversary in 2007
Whitestone School was first opened as a primary school for boys in
1942. It closed in 1976 but was reopened in 1982, this time as a co-
ed primary school.
Throughout its history, the positive and vibrant spirit of the
school
has lived on, maybe more so now than ever and because of this it
has
been decided that we need to celebrate the 65/25 Anniversary in
style.
Besides holding Anniversary celebration events, we would very much
like to hear from as many Old Whitestonians as possible. We want to
find out about interesting events that may have occurred during
your
time at the school, we want to compile lists of your names and
contact details, dates you were at the school and where and what
you
are doing now.

I get fairly regular copies of your Morning Mirror fwd. to me by
Esme Van Jaarsveld one of which had an obituary of Father Odilo
which
arrived while I was overseas. We were married by Father Odilo as
also
was my sister (now in Uk)
I worked at F. Issels and Son for many years and wonder if the
business still exists? I do know that my next long term employer,
Randalls Group is sadly now defunct so I wonder what has happened
to
Issels.

THE BOWLING TOURNAMENT RAISED $421,000 TO WHICH TIGER BRAKE AND
CLUTCH HAVE ADDED A LIKE AMOUNT BRINGING THE TOTAL TO $842,000
WHICH
WILL BE SHARED AMONGST IDENTIFIED CHARITIES.

AS YOU MIGHT BE AWARE, THE CREMATORIUM HAS BEEN OUT OF USE FOR
QUITE
SOME TIME NOW. THE PROBLEM HAS LARGELY BEEN TO DO WITH THE BURNER.
AS
A RESULT, CREMATIONS ARE BEING UNDERTAKEN IN GWERU.

AT A COUNCIL MEETING (9 OCTOBER 2006) THE DIRECTOR OF HEALTH
SERVICES
WAS DIRECTED TO ENGAGE ALL INTERESTED PARTIES IN AN EFFORT TO GET
THE
CREMATORIUM OPERATIONAL ONCE MORE. ACCORDINGLY, CONTACTS WERE MADE
AND TO DATE PROGRESS IS AS FOLLOWS.

UNITED SPRINGS HAVE REFURBISHED BOTH THE BURNER IN THE CREMATOR
FURNACE AND THE OTHER BURNER, WHICH WS AT THE COUNCIL WORKSHOP,
BOTH
FREE OF CHARGE. THE BURNER IS HOWEVER YET TO BE INSTALLED AND TESTED.

MR TIM JOHNSON, THE LOCAL BEIT TRUSTEES REPRESENTATIVE HAS ADVISED
THAT THE TRUST WILL PAY FOR THE BRICKWORK AS PER A QUOTATION
PROVIDED

staff who can attend to all their medical and any other needs day
and night. Our Nurse Aides will also keep the patients room tidy,
prepare simple meals, administer medication, and do the patients
washing and ironing.
We supply nurse aides to Hospitals, Garden Park, Edith Duly, other
institutions and private homes.
Charges are $1.300 per day.. 6 days a week from 7am to 5 pm
and $1.300 per night. 6 nights a week from 5 pm to 7 am.
A relief nurse for the 7th day and night will be arranged by the
agency. Holidays are charged out at double time.
A contribution towards transport will be welcome as it now costing
$500 from the western suburbs to town and a further $500 to their
patients if they are not within walking distance. These costs
will
be the same for their return journey.
