TOUR DE FALCON 2006

This was held on Sunday 2nd July, 2006, and as with the previous 
events it was accident free!!
As usual, the Bulawayo public and companies were not found wanting  
and came forward with their usual generosity. Without them the Tour 
de Falcon could never be the great success that it is. Drury
Wickman 
sponsored the Falcon Team events, Ascot & Hillside Spar contributed 
enormously and Racing Snake Cycles also came to the party with 
considerable sponsorship. We are most grateful to these three main 
sponsors, and a  very big Thank You from Falcon College.
Then onto  people and companies who gave cash to go towards our 
prizes they were Jeremy & Felicity Vaughan, Anon Parent, B.K.Cawood 
(Pvt) Ltd, Deidre Adams, Syd & Kathy Versfeld, Tuys & Merilyn de 
Vries, Footwear & Rubber Ind, Wholesome Wholesalers, Solomons 
Supermarket, Fence Africa, Cattleman Steakhouse & Knight Frank
thank 
you to one and all.

Also who gave in some way or the other  and made our task of making 
our Tour de Falcon easier were Pro Signs, Grillos Restaurant, 
Morning Mirror, Datlabs, Lobels Biscuits, Land Guest Lodge & our
two 
Botswana families the David-Andersons & Grahams thank you to you all.
And now onto the BIG day. Saturday was freezing cold and  drizzling 
with rain. Everyone at Falcon was very concerned as to  whether or 
not our race was going to go ahead !
However the weather was perfect not even a breeze we could not have 
asked for a better day.
The morning started with with breakfast ! The smell of borewors 
cooked on gas braais could be smelt miles away, people started to 
arrive and many started to eat the delicious breakfast.
Cyclists started arriving, in an array of colours and the outfits 
were amazing everyone was dressing the part !

Ascot car park filled to capacity with bikes, riders, cars, trucks, 
buses and Mars Ambulance was there again to ensure that if there
was 
a mishap the experts could attend to it. We also had Falcon College 
Ambulance out with Dave Fleming and Sister Watson at the helm, then 
there was the lead car ably driven by Graham Armstrong who lead the 
way for our cyclists ensuring that the road ahead would be clear
for 
the mass that was about to hit that road with 447 riders !

AMAZING FANTASTIC É a sight to behold - stand back Tour de France!!.

TS Matabele with Peter Rollason and his Cadets with red flags 
flapping were out early ready to man the intersections and advise 
traffic that they must travel with caution.
Bulawayo BMX Assoc were also there to assist with their PA system 
with music blaring and many announcements the cyclists started to
get 
into their pens with muscles flexing, gloves  & helmets poised to go.

The Johannesburg road was a sea of bikes, amazing colours like a 
thousand brightly coloured Licra Lizards, from little children, 
teenagers, ladies, men and the social guy who was there just for
the 
fun and maybe to work off the night before. Then there were those 
Elite, ultra fit, serious but great sportsmen.
There were cyclists from all over Zimbabwe we even had them from 
South  Africa and Botswana.
The finish line was a welcoming sight
As you turned that last corner you could see ahead the banners
green 
and red up head all welcoming you to ÒSPARÓ ÔGOOD FOR YOU  finish 
line a big thanks to Garth Steinbach.

Now  they were all in, and all hobbled down to the Bushtick where 
Frank was playing his tunes and the Craft Fair was buzzing,
thousands 
of people all over the place all rushing for that tent selling 
refreshments. As the sun began to get lower in the sky the riders
and 
supporters continued to sit and relax, not wanting to leave that 
beautiful place watching people relaxed in front of the Bushtick, 
talking, laughing, smiling and congratulating  each other and
saying 
they had a  wonderful day spent with the Falcon College family,
with 
our Falcon flying high ... until next years Tour de Falcon - see
you 
there.

APPEAL TO SAVE OUR COELACANTH
Did you know that Bulawayo has its very own Coelacanth at the
Natural 
History Museum ?
Do you know what a Coelacanth is?
It is a prehistoric fish once thought to have been extinct for 
millions of years, until in 1938 a live specimen was caught near
East 
London in South Africa.   The Coelacanth currently in our museum
came 
from the Comoros in 1978.  This fish has been described as
a 'living 
fossil' and is very rare; most Museums around the world only having 
plaster casts or fibreglass models.  We have the real deal: a 
preserved Coelacanth literally in the flesh!
Unfortunately the original tank it was displayed in was damaged and 
for the last 15 years or so our precious specimen has been tucked 
away in the basement.
The temporary tank in which the Coelacanth is presently housed is 
rusting and it is possible that should nothing be done that the 
Coelacanth itself may deteriorate.
Our museum is fortunate to have qualified and capable staff.  It
also 
has a suitable display tank to re-home the Coelacanth.  However to 
successfully preserve and display this fish approximately 400
litres 
of Isopropyl Alcohol is required.  The cost of this is around $400 
million dollars.
Whilst one could argue that this isnt our problem - surely some of 
our tax dollars could be used ? - we all know the reality is sadly 
different.  National Museums and Monuments are underfunded and if
we 
dont save OUR Coelacanth, nobody else will.
I am appealing to the public: please help to put our Coelacanth
back 
on display.

international awards include the 2002 National Guitar Competition
in 
Mexico,
first prize at the Kulkulcan Competition in Mexico, awards at the
Zwolle
Competition in Zwolle and the Paracho Competition in Mexico.

On Saturday 22 July at 7.00 p.m. Morgan Szymanski will be the guest
at
a
fund-raising buffet supper at which he will give a short recital.

families in and around Bulawayo having to cope without the support 
and companionship of their partners/husbands.
We are trying to set up a network of support by establishing a 
database of all "grass widows".  We would like to try and set up a 
"sisterhood" of support for all those who find themselves lonely 
especially over weekends that seem to go on forever.  By doing so,
we 
hope to become proactive rather than reactive in the situation that 
we find ourselves in and to show our men that they have one less 
thing to worry about.
By sending your details (name, contact telephone number and e-mail 
address) to either of the e-mail addresses below, you are
indicating 
that you are willing to become a beacon of support to other women
who 
are in the same situation as you.  This could mean hosting a "bring-
a-
plate" tea at your house on a Sunday afternoon, or pulling together

When making a cup of tea, fill up a flask with boiling water for,
if 
and when the power cut comes.

It occurred to me last night - when there was yet another power cut -
 
that we ALL should start to take action ...
get ZESA to start a load - shedding schedule & stick to it as the 
power cuts are a dangerous waste of time & money .
I remember seeing petitions all over town when there were rates 
increases etc so why not start a campaign against unscheduled power 
cuts ?

HINTS

Please inform your emailing lists to switch of their security 
systems. If your battery has to support your unit it will
deteriorate 
very rapidly if it is discharged completely after 8 hours. This
will 
shorten your battery life considerably.
Also the power surge can mess up your alarm system. It makes one 
wonder why we bothered with them, since that is the time you really 
need them.
Switch off freezers and fridges, the power surge can mess up your 
compressor.
Sometimes you may think your geyser elements have given in, find
out 
whether it is not a ripple switch, which is located in your Zesa 
box.  Zesa are the only people who are permitted to switch this back
on.
Switch off your borehole if it is running during load shedding.
Your 
motor is expensive to replace.
I have inexpensive solar lights which I recharge during the
daylight 
hours. I can not read by them, but they light up a room
sufficiently 
for me to locate candles and matches, and the furniture.
I have also replaced most of my globes with power saving globes - 
even my exterior lights.
Machinery on stand-by , TV, Computers etc all use power. Switch
them 
off.
Pancakes/Crepes (no sugar) are probably one of the best quick meals
I 
know. Fill them with any cold left-over meats, boiled eggs, salads. 
The fillings can also be heated up if electricity is available. 
Crepes will keep several days if packed in air proof containers, or 
prepare batter and keep in fridge, very quick to cook after power 
comes back on.  For dessert: Add a bit of sugar to the mixture,
cook 
and keep, to serve roll up with a little sugar and cinnamon, 
sprinkled before rolling and top with cinnamon and sugar and cream
or 
ice cream if desired. I also slice banana into a crepe.

LET'S GET THE BALL ROLLING!
Well here I sit .. trying to find the matches for the candle in the 
dark, it shouldn't be "my night" but who knows which "night" is 
"mine" exactly? So here we go again what shall I cook in my one
pot, 
atop my gas ring? It needs to be a quick meal as gas is scarce and
I 
have used this month's allocation to Bots to fill up. So here is my 
cordon bleu attempt at a well balanced family meal. Let's get the 
ball rolling and share our one pot dinner ideas, who knows a world 
famous cook book could be in the pipeline, I mean Wooty was 
Zimbabwean after all!!
Pasta a la Caroline
Chop a packet of mushrooms and fry them in butter and put aside (
you 
can actually do this it earlier while you still have power) Then
boil 
500g pasta , drain and quickly heat the mushroom mixture and toss
in 
a packet of chopped ham and a drained tin of peas, toss all into
the 
drained pasta sprinkle some parmesan cheese and about half a cup of 
cream and stir all together quickly to warm through. Season with
some 
ground black pepper. Open a bottle of wine sit on the veranda , 
listen to the beautiful sounds of an African night, chat to the 
family 'cause there is no TV and then beat them all at Monopoly!

WOODLAND   INN

Woodland Inn is situated 250 metres east of the Bulawayo-Gwanda
road 
at the 50 km peg, and is set in a grove of Leadwood trees, green 
lawns and peaceful surroundings.

There are eight rooms (varying in size) with five ensuite and three 
Ôsharing bathrooms. The Inn accommodates 18 people comfortably and 
is the ideal venue for a conference or a quiet Ôgetaway for a group 
of friends or family members.
As well as a fully equipped bar service, the Inns restaurant and 
conference room can accommodate up to 20 people (the conference

has a chalk board, white board, and a flip chart included in the 
daily rate). A nature walk and bird watching around the farm to 
delight nature lovers, and a dart board and playing cards are also 
available as extra-mural activities. A dam on the farm is not
usable 
for fishing as it is seasonal.

Access to the surrounding areas of interest is by your own vehicle, 
and includes the five main supply dams to Bulawayo City, which are
a 
fishermans dream and where picnic sites are in abundance.
Lumene falls and Dianas Pools are situated nearby and are the 
starting points for hiking and mountain bike trails. Many caves and 
grain bin sites are easily accessible.
