LADY DRIVERS BEWARE!!!!
Two weeks ago in the vicinity of Fife St between 4th & 5th Ave, I was reversing out of a side parking, there was nothing coming to my left so I proceeded to ease out. I then heard a thud and there was a well dressed, middle aged man of dark complexion and i had supposedly hit him. Unfortunately for me there were no witnesses and I was apprehensive of getting out of my car in case it was a ploy to steal it.
I then told him to get in and said we would go to the police and to a Dr. He declined the police and said to take him to a clinic in Fort St which I did and gave him what money I had to pay for the Dr and foolishly gave him my contact nos. I contacted my husband to tell him what happened and he insisted I go to the police to report the matter which I spent the rest of the afternoon doing, on my third attempt finally finding Traffic section. The police were polite and helpful, took my report and came with me to where I'd dropped off the man and he was no where to be seen but had entered the clinic and left. The police stated they wanted to see the said man to assess his injuries and my log book insurance etc which I provided and that I may have to pay a fine!
On leaving the police I went to collect my vege order and lo and behold outside on the pavement was the said man. I confronted him and said that the police wanted to see us together and made an arrangement for 2pm the next day. He called m the next morning saying he wanted to send someone for money for medicine which I refused to do, he then became aggressive. I duly went to the police at 2pm but he didn't turn up and whats more discovered that in less than 24 hours the police had opened a docket number and lost the report in its entirety!!!!

Just a quickie to ask if you know of anyone in Durban who might be willing to be a Companion and help out an ex-Rhodesian who is receiving dyalisis (sp?) treatment.

The lady is offering accommodation and the use of a car so they can go on drives, and also to assist her with transport for hospital appointments). She is willing to pay quite a good salary.

Please ask them to phone me on Durban 031 311 8821 (work) or 082 789 3355.

Many thanks Yvonne
WELL DONE PETRA JUNIOR SCHOOL

I have just been through the school application's "Drill" for entry for my first born. What a pleasant surprise I had during one such experience. PETRA was perfect for what I am looking for, from the gate guy to the gardener, who has the tidiest and most beautifully kept garden, to the cleaners, reception, and what I saw of teachers, it was welcoming - and reassuring. The ladies at reception and the Infant teacher who tested my daughter where friendly, helpful and left me feeling confident that if my child were ever in need their assistance that she would be in safe, comforting hands. What a delight in the knowledge that my child's home values and our beliefs will be extended at this school that sees itself as a 'family'. Incidentally I got my reply instantly as to my daughter's acceptance. I am so excited to know that we have this wonderful opportunity in our own town. Keep it up Petra.

NEWS ON THE DEAD BULAWAYO CREMATORIUM !

I have at last had a reply to my letter to the council. they confirm that the crematorium is closed for public use and has in fact outlived its working life span despite being refurbished more than three times. Apparently the cremator was built by Dowson & Dobson (I think), some forty years ago, but was only supposed to last 15 years!

To my surprise, I was told that they only have about 200 cremations a year in Bulawayo, so the facility is not that important. Try telling that to someone who has just forked out hundreds of millions for their loved ones to go all the way to Mutare in order to obtain their final wish.

The wonderfully supportive Hindu section of the community are interested in getting the crematorium working. A suggestion put forward was for a new crematorium to be built adjacent to the present building. The new facility would use wood and I presume coal, if we can get any.

From: "Tony Seward" Subject: Hank Blowers
Is anyone involved with the Boy Scouts in Rhodesia who might had known of Hank Blowers a former deputy Commissioner of the B.S.A.Police about which people on the Police Association group are seeking information. I forward a copy of a recent message on their site. "A Mrs Elisabeth Brown (tel no. 01495 722002) tells me that her son, Peter Row(s)ell, has been given Hank Blowers ceremonial sword and would like some biography on the former member of the B.S.A.Police. I have Hank's retirement notice (Dec '67 Outpost) but no other info. He was Sgt-at- Arms at Zim Parliament well into the 80s, if not later, so a formal obituary notice is unlikely to have been published anywhere. Date and place of demise would be useful. The retirement notice is pretty dull (for a Dep Commr Admin) but in his 31 years he did open the new police station in Harare in 1942 and commanded the Copper belt contingent in 1956 and the Nyasaland adventure in 1959. He was a big wheel in the Boy Scouts Assoc of Rhodesia and might possibly have figured in international scouting literature if it still (did) exists. Some of the medal collectors may have more info and I have copied this posting to the History site. (Mentions in Hugh' s History of the Force go only a little further than the above. "Thanks in anticipation," If you can add any information please let me know. Otherwise all is well in Bognor. Cheers for now. Tony Seward

CRIME AWARENESS BULAWAYO UPDATE written and compiled by Tracey Burns 30/06/06 British Statesman in the 18th Century - Edmunde Burke said "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
I must apologise for the lateness in sending out this update, yes, it was due to the power cuts. In keeping this in mind I hope you are all being extra vigilant with all your electrical goodies and especially your electric gates, alarms and electric fences.

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT SOMEONE'S DRINKING ?

You don't have to drink to suffer from alcoholism.

Are you confused, depressed and nervous ?

Are you losing sleep ? Are fears overwhelming you ? Do you feel sorry for yourself ? Do you refuse invitations to family and social functions ? Do you take your frustrations out on others ? Are you resentful ? Do you lie and try to cover up the drinking problem ? Are you ashamed of your situation ? There is help available for you in AlAnon Phone 011 218 314 Tuesday evenings 7.30 pm Christ The King Church, corner of Matopos Rd and Cecil Avenue (entrance off Oxford Road), Hillside, Bulawayo. Warning to Adults......
Travelling with children in motor vehicles is a necessity - yet is possibly one of the times parents are lulled into a sense of safe- being, particularly given the large number of S U V's, Wagons and larger mini-bus type motor vehicles which being the current norm in not only this country, but others around the world. The first world has severe restrictions. It may be argued that these are too severe, but given their traffic patterns and the many hundreds of surveys and studies carried out by not only the motor companies themselves, but road safety inspectors and individual analysts; the recommendations and laws governing driving and more especially, passenger safety are all made with the long term goal of preserving life and preventing injury. These restrictions include strict policing of the use of seat belts both front and rear, mini buses and S U V's are not precluded; as well as camera-monitored speed restrictions in (particularly) residential areas. Just because it is not 'Law' here, or policed particularly well, common sense should prevail anyway.
STOP PLEASE! and for a few moments and consider the implications of the following scenarios, all of which I have personally witnessed with regular monotony in and around Bulawayo in the past weeks; particularly during term times.
Infants travelling on their mother's laps in the driving seat of not only vehicles without airbags, but in vehicle with airbags (which manufacturers strictly warn against). In some instances, the mothers are not wearing their seat belts.
Infants in safety chairs in front passenger seats of motor vehicles fitted with airbags, again strictly against manufacturer's recommendations. The fact the infant is strapped in will not negate the damage the airbag will cause if inflated on impact. Airbags inflate very fast and can cause severe damage to persons of light body mass - especially infants.
Infants standing on the front passenger seat, particularly of pick- ups, but also of cars - holding the roof grip in one hand, or holding nothing at all, and well away from the driver, who would in the event of a collision or accident, be concentrating on the situation and NOT the child.
Infants standing, kneeling, or otherwise unsecured (no child safety seat, booster seat, or rear seat belts being used) in the back seats of cars, vans and S U V's. In some instances, with the rear windows fully open (summer) and arms flailing outside the car. Here we loosely define "Infants" as being children, from birth to around 20/25 Kgs, who should under no circumstances travel in any motor vehicle of any description without the use of a safety seat, booster seat, or at worst, the fitted inertia reel type seat restraints lap-strap portion (as if they keep the full belt on they risk neck damage as they are not big enough to use the device to it full design recommendation). Similarly, they need to be kept away as far as is possible from the front seats of any vehicle fitted with airbags.
Children travelling (unaccompanied by adult, or at least, a responsible teenager on a one-to-one basis only) in the back of open pick-up trucks, sitting in some instances on the sides or tailgate. Children travelling in open pick-up trucks which have loose shopping containing carbonated drinks in glass bottles, tins or other items (camping gear widens the list of 'lethal' weapons considerably) which become 'missiles' in the event of collision, or very hard braking. To test this theory drop a warm soft drink onto a concrete floor and see what force the shards of glass can be propelled with and how far they disperse....glass is one of your worst enemies in ANY vehicle in ANY accident - which is why windscreens and side windows and mirrors are all laminated 'safety glass' which is still dangerous, but not nearly to the same extent as plain glass.
Physics was never my strong point, but common sense tells us that if a vehicle travels into a solid fixed object at (say) 30 Km/h, the vehicle will stop in nano-seconds....but the passengers are still doing a touch less than 30 Km/h.....consider your 3 year-old moving forward into a windscreen at that speed, even hitting the rear of the front seats; let alone your 10 year-old falling out of a pick-up truck. Add to this a couple of flying 500 gramme tins of food and the shards of glass, and you have a spectacular potential injury/injuries to contend with. Surveys tell us that at 60 Km/h the potential for damage is at least tripled, if not quadrupled... A trained parachutist using a standard military type (circa 1945) parachute used to hit the ground in a controlled manner at less than 30 Km/h (the more modern designed 'chutes are better designed and this speed of impact is more reduced), however, would you jump from a moving vehicle at more than 20 Km/k onto tar or hard gravel - voluntarily, of course ?
Having spent time in the Police and witnessed many various types of accidents involving motor vehicles and motor bikes these scenarios need to be taken seriously; especially as many medical aids will only pay 'half compensation" for accident victims. PLEASE use common sense and think safety when setting out on any journey, even 'around the corner'.
Accidents always happen when you least expect them. If you are guilty of any of the above points, you ARE placing your children in serious potential danger and you should use your common sense, if nothing else, to try and prevent accident-related damage to them and of course the trauma to yourself in the event you become the guilty party as the 'responsible' authority. What you are doing is setting them a poor example to follow by not using your common sense. It is not being paranoid to instil the discipline of 'belting up' from infancy, this could well be part of the key to their longevity.
