ON THE ACADEMIC SIDE WE ARE VERY PROUD TOO :
Our Cambridge results were very pleasing with 99% at IGCSE getting a full certificate and 72% able to be considered for an Academic 'A' Level. Results in English Language and Literature, French and History were particularly good. The Zimsec results came very late, but Food and Nutrition scored very highly in those, with a 96% pass rate.

POONAM MANGABHAI 3 X A* AND 6 X A
NTANDO HLABANGANA 2 X A* 7 X A AND 1 X B

At AS level there was a 90% pass rate. The top students were : Matseliso Henderson, Ntawi Rubgega and Joanna Szewcyk (each with 3 X A over 3 subjects). Top pass rates in subjects were recorded by French, English Language, English Literature and Geography. At AL Level, where there was a 94% pass rate, the top student was Esther Bischoff, with 4 X A over 4 subjects, followed by Melody Kutepa with 2 x A and 1 x B. Top pass rates in subjects were enjoyed by English Literature, Biology, Physics, Art, Accounting and Maths. Our congratulations go to all our candidates in the examinations for doing so well. We are also very proud of Charlene Mhlanga of the L6 for being awarded one of only 4 full academic scholarships for 'A' Level by the Beit Trust/ATS.

Dear Editor
In your lead article in the Morning Mirror 186 you state that you will not be visiting Perth, Western Australia because it has no trees. This assumption is entirely incorrect; Perth is extremely well treed with West Australian eucalyptus, imported Eastern Australian eucalyptus and exotics. Whilst we agree that some of the newer suburbs maybe more sparsely treed, the City itself, the older suburbs and especially the Darling scarp to the east of the City, are extremely well treed . There are abundant large Jarrah and Marri trees remaining and the streets are lined with flowering gums, melaleucas and numerous exotics too. We even have our own Australian huge fig trees, the Morton Bay and Port Jackson, both rival the African ficus.sp. in size and majesty. Don't write off Perth as being a treeless city, come and see for yourself. We copy the photograph of our front garden which is dominated by tall Marri trees.

On Tuesday 9th May, McDonald Club (7th street suburbs) in conjunction with Bulawayo Round Table No 49 will be holding a slide show/Talk by Eric Fry at 6.30pm -upstairs.
Eric was a participant in the Tsunami that hit Sri-Lanka on boxing day 2004 and the talk is both interesting & informative. The slide show & talk will take about 1 1/2 hours. Well worth coming along too. Cost is $100 000 per person (for non members) to cover the clubs entrance fee.

The Fifth Bulawayo Music Festival (14-18 June)

Booking for season tickets for the Fifth Bulawayo Music Festival is open and bookings will be accepted either by post or in person at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music. E-mail reservations will be made on receipt of a booking on the assumption that payment will follow promptly.

The festival will run from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 June 2006, with an opening concert on the evening of Wednesday 14 June and there will be 17 concerts in the classical programme as well as the usual 'Meet the Performer' interviews. The performers will include Benjamin Nabarro (violin), Ania Safonova (violin/viola), Matthew Sharp (cello), Jeanette Micklem (piano), Leslie Howard (piano), Michael Brownlee Walker (piano), Cherith Keen (soprano), Dilys Lloyd (mezzo-soprano) and Catherine Stirling (violin).

There will also be a second, integrated programme in a second venue at the Academy where a whole variety of performances will be promoted, many of them centred on Isigodlo Arts. There will be African music and dance, jazz, the Harare Youth Orchestra, Arundel Choir and other young musicians as well as non-musical attractions including an art exhibition, acrobatic dancing and poetry readings. The two complimentary programmes will offer non- stop entertainment from 10.00 in the morning to 10.00 at night. There will also be picnic areas and snacks, drinks etc.on sale throughout the day.
Two season tickets are available, one for the five evening concerts, the other for the eleven (or so!) daytime concerts. The cost of the tickets is:
Evening season ticket (five concerts): $2 000 000
Full season ticket $4 000 000
However, these prices will rise on 15 May in line with inflation and our anticipated costs. The season ticket will also give admission to events in the second performance area so it represents a real bargain.
