PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
THE FIFTH BULAWAYO MUSIC FESTIVAL

Booking for season tickets for the Fifth Bulawayo Music Festival will open from Wednesday 1 March. Bookings will be accepted either by post or in person at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music. E-mail reservations will be made on receipt of a booking on the assumption that payment will follow promptly.

The festival will run from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 June 2006, with an opening concert on the evening of Wednesday 14 June and there will be some 16 concerts in the main programme as well as the usual 'Meet the Performer' interviews. The performers will include Benjamin Nabarro (violin), Ania Safonova (violin/viola), Matthew Sharp (cello), Jeanette Micklem (piano), Leslie Howard (piano), Michael Brownlee Walker (piano), Lorna Kelly (soprano), Cherith Keen (soprano) and Catherine Stirling (violin).

There will also be a second, integrated programme in a second venue at the Academy where a whole variety of performances will be promoted, many of them centred on the Isigodlo group who have put on very successful shows in the last two years. There will be African music and dance, jazz, the Harare Youth Orchestra, Arundel Choir and other young musicians as well as non-musical attractions ranging from talks on the night sky and art exhibitions to acrobatic dancing and poetry readings! The two complimentary programmes will offer non-stop entertainment from 10.00 in the morning to 10.00 at night. There will also be picnic areas and snacks, drinks etc.on sale throughout the day.
Two season tickets are available, one for the five evening concerts, the other for the eleven (or so!) daytime concerts. The cost of the tickets is: Evening season ticket (five concerts) : $1 500 000 Daytime season ticket (eleven concerts) : $2 500 000 If you wish to buy both season tickets, then there is a substantial discount and both are available for $3 000 000. However, these prices can only be held for March and the price will rise on 1 April and again on 1 May in line with inflation and our anticipated costs. The cost of single tickets for all 16 concerts will probably be at least twice the current cost of the season ticket. That ticket will also give admission to events in the second performance area so it represents a real bargain - and, of course, season ticket holders get first choice of the seats! So far as possible tickets will be allocated in the preferred area. On behalf of the Lions Club of Bulawayo could you please include an appeal in your Morning Mirror for any spectacles and hearing aids that are no longer needed by their owners? For many years our Club has collected these for people who are unable to afford to buy them and we are sorely in need of more. THOUGHTS FROM ABOARD
I was going back through your old articles and found the one on Bulawayo Airport which you wrote about with much affection - well me too. You see my mom and dad worked there. In fact they were amongst the first people to do so. They moved to Bulawayo from Lusaka in about 1958 when Byo airport used to be in Khumalo, and I can remember them moving to the 'new' site at about that time. They worked for NAS Airport Services and my dad was catering manager looking after the food not only for all the planes but the airport restaurant too. He also managed the bar. My mom ran the little shop on the ground floor. My earliest memory of the place was at the time of the war in Belgian Congo and I can remember hundreds of Belgian refugees hanging around the airport in transit back to Europe, and hundreds of British soldiers camped out on the balcony and around the airport terminal waiting dakotas to fly them into the Congo. I used to hang around with my folks and the airport became my second home. I can remember staring wistfully at the international jets (prior to '65) wondering about the exotic places they came from and went off to. My folks were there until about 1974 when my dad got fired - that was when he bought Mayfaire Restaurant in Fife St. It seems odd that the place I still remember as the 'new' airport already needs rebuilding - me too I guess.

I was wondering if that was the same William Ballantyne that I knew during the time I lived in Nkana-Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia)?

I know that William's family moved to Bulawayo in the 1970s. Could this be the same person? I am the founder of a web site for ex-pat Northern Rhodesians, called The Great North Road (www.greatnorthroad.org). I would greatly appreciate it if you could confirm that this is the same person.

I am hunting for a picture of the University of Rhodesia emblem , maybe a copy of it off a diploma or letter head, anything. I don't want the University of Zimbabwe Emblem , thanks ! I am wanting to have a woodcarver carve a plaque with this on it for a gift for an old mate of mine who went there. I will cover any and all expenses for this. If you can help , please at your earliest convenience so I can get this done.

OPEN LETTER FROM A BULAWAYO CITIZEN
This is a open letter to my fellow Zimbabweans out there. We are being ripped off and in many cases we can do something about it. Unfortunately we have developed a culture of "that's the way it is" and do nothing. I disagree and it is high time we act together as a community and take the time to raise our displeasure in writing to the appropriate Companies. To mention but a few areas:
The Medical Aid Societies are very happy to take our contributions and if payment is late we are penalised. When it comes to the medical service providers they want cash up front. It takes anything from one month upwards to process our claims plus the four days for the cheque to clear. This is totally unacceptable as we have paid our hard earned cash up front and now have to wait a significant amount of time for reimbursement. The net result in our current inflationary environment is the reimbursement is no where near the value of the initial cash up front payment.
Another area is the cellphone networks. We are constantly being cut off after a matter of seconds which we are being charged for. I take serious exception to this as I have no control over being cut off. If we had to calculate the amount of money we are paying for calls made that have been cut off I am sure it would be billions of dollars. I do not believe we should pay something that is out of our control. I am sitting here thinking maybe I am wasting my time but then again I'm tired of being ripped off. I am hoping that each one of you out there will make the effort and put your grievances in writing. Together we have a voice, as individuals we are laughed at. I'll end with a saying which should ring a tune with everybody. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change Courage to change the things I can And the wisdom to know the difference.
