AIRPORT TAX It might be worth mentioning that the Airport Tax you are mentioning in your news letter is only applicable to AIR ZIMBABWE flights. Air tickets bought on SAA or BA Comair still include this airport tax. Guess Air Zim were not coughing up to ZIMRA and they have insisted on collecting taxes themselves at the airport. Obviously not payable in Zim dollars for foreigners.

Performing Arts Bulawayo presents FOUR concerts:

MUSICIANS FROM PRINCE EDWARD SCHOOL 7.30 p.m. Saturday 24 September Robert Sibson Hall The programme will include clarinet, cello and vocal soloists, double bass and cello duets, mbira duets, marimbas, the PE jazz band and more! The group will be touring Mozambique prior to coming to Bulawayo and will also be touring Zambia and South Africa this year. Booking at the door - $30 000.00. There will be a second performance which will include new items with the emphasis on the marimbas and jazz band. This will take place on the Girls College lawns at 3.00 on Sunday 25 September and admission will be free but with an opportunity for donations!

ELEONORA SHARGORODSKAYA (SOPRANO) ~ NATALIA VOLKOVA (PIANO) 7.30 p.m. Tuesday 27 September Robert Sibson Hall The programme will include songs and arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Puccini, Schumann and others as well as piano music by Chopin and Schubert. Eleonora Shargorodskaya is a leading Russian soprano who was born in Moscow, is a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory and has won a number of awards. She has taught at the St Petersburg University of Culture for more than two decades and has performed at concerts across Russian and in Europe. Her accompanist, Natalia Volkova, was born in Ryazan and graduated from college as a pianist before studying at the St Petersburg Conservatory. She undertook a post-graduate course as a composer and has written a wide range of music across a number of genres as well as performing regularly in Russia and Europe. This tour of Zimbabwe is a collaboration between a number of organisations. It was initiated by the Russian Embassy, and the performers St.Petersburg-Zimbabwe air travel has been sponsored by British Airways and British Airways operated by Comair. Stanbic Bank is also a principal sponsor, as are Meikles Africa Hotels, Inns of Zimbabwe and Avis Rent- a-Car.

TRIOSPHERE 6.00 p.m. Friday 30 September Robert Sibson Hall Triosphere is a German jazz band with an unusual line-up, two saxophones (one high, one low) and guitar. The German Embassy tells us that "when the band Triosphere stormed the German jazz scene in the spring of 2004, it was met with a thunderous response in the music journals. Seldom had one encountered so many superlatives describing a new ensemble: 'an ensemble that points the way in contemporary Jazz'; 'one of the most vibrant and original voices around'; 'Triosphere sets breathtaking standards'." HOME FOR BABIES

A home for abandoned babies and HIV orphans has been established in Suburbs.

Some of these babies have been at Mpilo Hospital for quite a few years and hopefully will be moved to the home in the not too distant future.

The home is under the auspices of the Baptist Church and urgently needs anything and everything to do with babies . We need cots, prams, push chairs, high chairs, baby blankets, linen, nappies, car chairs and toys. We will receive nearly 30 babies and need your help. APPEAL FOR 'THE WAY' CLINIC AT THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION ,KENT RD ,HILLSIDE This Clinic has been operating for 3 years to serve the needs of the poor and destitute in the area. It is run by a team of volunteers-two doctors,two nursing sisters with help from other nurses when they are off duty ,and several helpers. The number of patients has risen considerably over the last year ,exceeds 100 now and then so consequently more help is needed not least because one of the sisters and one doctor is going on leave shortly . The Clinic operates on Wednesdays from 10am to 1.00 or 2.00pm depending on the demand in the Parish Room which is entered from the church car-park . Our Appeal is for doctors and nurses/retired nurses who can give a few hours of their time on Wednesday mornings. We would also welcome gifts of medicines,bandages,pill boxes or anything else that might be useful in this service. PERHAPS A BIT-A SOMETHING FOR MM READERS WATER READINGS AND ACCOUNTS........ THE PROBLEM WITH "ESTIMATE" READINGS...... a.k.a. ANOTHER WAY TO MILK THE LONG-SUFFERING CONSUMER. I may have "the bull by the udder" or "the wrong end of the stick" but problems raised by the "estimate" readings are raising their ugly heads. I know we have rationing now, but as the Accounts are so far behind - the problem is current. As I see it......... "They" estimate my water account - lets say its 48.6 k/ltrs This they charge in tiers - 13.5 at 3363.07c = $ 45 401.45 10.7 at 8632.03c = $ 92 362.72 37.5 at 22831.62c = $856 185.75 Total 48.6 = $993 949.92 The next month is an Actual reading and they say I have a credit of 3.1k/ltrs...yipee This they give you on the basic tier of 3363.07c = 3.1 x 3363.07c= $ 10 525.52 Cr. recd. Instead of the top tier of 22831.62c = 3.1 x 22831.62c= $ 70 778.02 Credit due A difference of................. = $ 60 252.50 This may not be a lot for some but is a week's bread or milk for others (at present costs). Perhaps a finance boffin out there will be able to correct me / clarify this. Perhaps the City Treasurer will be able to shed some light on this ? This may well be the case with "estimated" ZESA too but I've not been lucky enough to have a refund yet? Concerned Comsumer

Just to let everyone to expect a big shock with the Zesa bills. I have a prepaid meter and on the 19th August I bought $ 100 000.00 of electricity and got 1854 units. On the 31st August I thought I would beat the " 100%" increase and bought another $ 100 000.00 and this time only got 327 units, a "567%" increase. I got a friend to query this with Zesa and they are adament this is the correct amount. So please prepare.

Beware the bearded upholsterer!

There is a bearded upholsterer going around offering to fix car seats. He mutters some low price and then takes your seat to "look at". It is returned fully recovered and he demands an iniquitous price. Reputable upholsterers charge 3.5 million to cover a truck seat and the materials they use are around 250 000/m.

Lost Hearing Aid. If anyone should find an Oticon Hearing Aid in a small black box, this may belong to Mike Jacobs (Tel. 242094). It was in his brief case when the latter was stolen when in town last Tuesday, 6th Sept. He would be very grateful to have it back!

I was surfing the internet in the hopes of being able to pick up some 'homemade' stir fry sauce recipes, when I saw your write up on restaurants. We used to frequently go to the Manchurian and loved eating 'stir fry' meals. My husband suffers with various allergies and I am kicking myself because I lost a wonderful little insert from the Your Family Nov 1994 which had a page of stir fry sauces made in the home. We used to have our own stir-fry get-togethers and I made the simple sauces which resembled those used in the Manchurian restaurant.
