In 2004 the German Jazz band, Triosphere, burst onto the music scene and received fantastic reviews. Capitalising on their unusual line- up; two saxophones and one guitar, they enthralled both audiences and critics alike. In the absence of bass and percussion, Triosphere have created their own kind of rhythm and as such are constantly re- inventing the traditional sound of Jazz.

All three members of the band; Steffen Schorn, Roger Hanschel and Dirk Mündelein are experienced musicians with a phenomenal track record reaching far outside Germany. The members met whilst collaborating with the 'Kolner Saxophon Mafia,' which is held in high regard in Europe. They take their inspiration not from the usual droll elements but rather from the somewhat bizarre field of geometry, certainly a more pleasant way to think about figures!

Triosphere will be performing in Bulawayo as part of their Sub- Saharan African tour. If you want to experience them live here in Bulawayo and enjoy an evening of eclectic sophistication then join them at Robert Sibson Hall and get jazzed up!

APPEAL FOR 'THE WAY' CLINIC AT THE CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION, KENT RD, HILLSIDE This Clinic has been operating for 3 years to serve the needs of the poor and destitute in the area. It is run by a team of volunteers-two doctors, two nursing sisters with help from other nurses when they are off duty, and several helpers. The number of patients has risen considerably over the last year, exceeds 100 now and then so consequently more help is needed not least because one of the sisters and one doctor is going on leave shortly .
The Clinic operates on Wednesdays from 10am to 1.00 or 2.00pm depending on the demand in the Parish Room which is entered from the church car-park . Our Appeal is for doctors and nurses/retired nurses who can give a few hours of their time on Wednesday mornings. We would also welcome gifts of medicines,bandages,pill boxes or anything else that might be useful in this service.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

Performing Arts will be presenting several concerts at the end of September and beginning of October. Not all of the necessary information is yet to hand but the following are the confirmed and provisional dates at this stage:

Saturday 24 September [PROVISIONAL] : MUSICIANS FROM PRINCE EDWARD SCHOOL
The programme will include vocal, cello, clarinet and saxophone solos, mbira duets, marimba groups and the PE jazz band. The group will be touring Mozambique prior to coming to Bulawayo and the concert should be of a high standard - most of the boys performing are studying O and A level music and several want to pursue music as a career.
Tuesday 27 September [PROVISIONAL] : ELEONORA SHARGORODSKAYA (SOPRANO) - NATALIA VOLKOVA (PIANO)
The programme will include songs and arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Puccini, Schumann and others as well as piano music by Chopin.
Friday 30 September [CONFIRMED] : TRIOSPHERE
Triosphere is a German jazz band with rather an unusual line-up - two saxophones (one high, one low) and guitar. The information we have from the German Embassy tells us that "when the band Triosphere stormed the German jazz scene in the spring of 2004, it was met with a thunderous response in the music journals. Seldom had one encountered so many superlatives describing a new ensemble: "an ensemble that points the way in contemporary Jazz"; "one of the most vibrant and original voices around"; or simply "Triosphere sets breathtaking standards".
Tuesday 4 October [CONFIRMED] : DANIEL HILL (PIANO)
A young Australian pianist who has studied at the Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, and the St Petersburg State Conservatory, was a major prize winner in the 2004 Sydney International Piano Competition and has performed widely in Australia, Europe and Russia. His programme will include: Mendelssohn: Prelude and Fugue in E minor, Op.35/1 Prokofiev: 'Romeo and Juliet', Op.75 - excerpts Prokofiev: Sonata No.4 in C minor, Op.29 - 'From Old Notebooks' Chopin: Sonata No.3 in B minor, Op.58

HOME FOR BABIES

A home for abandoned babies and HIV orphans has been established in Suburbs.

Some of these babies have been at Mpilo Hospital for quite a few years and hopefully will be moved to the home in the not too distant future.

The home is under the auspices of the Baptist Church and urgently needs anything and everything to do with babies . We need cots, prams, push chairs, high chairs, baby blankets, linen, nappies, car chairs and toys. We will receive nearly 30 babies and need your help. I would like to put Dr. Chiwora's name forward for community minded person. He attends to masses of patients every day and does not discriminate against those who are unable to afford the more expensive medical aid funds. He said that someone needs to stay to take care of the people when asked if he was thinking of seeking greener pastures. Dr. Chiwora is never without a smile and seems to have miraculously low stress levels considering the level of commitment he has to the community - all of this in addition to being a wonderful gynaecologist! Isn't Bulawayo blessed?

ZIMBABWE CONSERVATION TASK FORCE
Following our last "Good News" report about the abundance of water at Main Camp in Hwange National Park, we have just discovered that the situation in Sinamatella is very different.
We are being inundated with desperate appeals for help because there is NO water in Sinamatella. We are informed that National Parks has run out of diesel to run the pumps and all the water holes have been reduced to pools of mud.
People who have just returned from Sinamatella have reported seeing about 200 zebra and a number of antelope standing around a dry water hole, staring into it as if willing the water to appear. The animals look extremely forlorn, thirsty and dehydrated. They know there is no water anywhere else in the vicinity and in their dehydrated state, they don't have the energy to walk any great distance in search of water, so they wait. There is no doubt that they will all die of thirst if something is not done urgently.
Fuel is very scarce in Zimbabwe but we have managed to find some. The problem now is that we have to pay for it. National Parks have no funds, either to buy fuel for the pumps or to pay their employees' wages. We were told this morning that the employees in Sinamatella have all absconded because they haven't been paid.
In order to get the situation under control, we need at least 5 000 litres of diesel. We have found the diesel and we are now appealing to anyone who can help us pay for it. It costs US$ 1.00 or ZWD 55 000.00 per litre so we are attempting to raise US$ 5 000 or ZWD 275 000 000.

RETIREMENT HOMES
Barbara Burrell Centre for the Blind has several expensive but urgent needs. If anyone can help in any way, please contact either Jill Osborne at 246688 or Judy Owens at 252678. The Home was burgled several months ago and all our gardening tools, including wheelbarrow, fork, spade, rake and axe were stolen. The vacuum cleaner is beyond repair and passed on to the scrap heap, and most urgently of all, our submersible borehole pump has burned out. With water rationing, it is essential that we have the borehole working. The Old Age Homes are only surviving because of the wonderful support of the already over stretched public, and we understand that any further requests for assistance might be pushing our luck, but with nowhere else to turn, if anybody is able to help in any way, we would be forever grateful.

Zimbabwe passport application forms can be obtained from the Outpatients department at Central Hospital. The regular charge applies, but there is only a short queue. Application still needs to be done at the passport office.

BE THE EYES AND EARS OF THE SPCA - LET'S HELP TO STOP CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

We appeal to the public in general to be on the look out for general neglect of and cruelty to animals and to report details to the local SPCA as soon as possible

Lets speak for those who cannot speak for themselves!!

This evening we were walking through Ilanda, when we came across a very sick, emaciated dog (his pelvic bones almost sticking through his skin!!) - lying near the gate of a home which was so very obviously closed up... We rattled the gate to try to get someone's attention.. to no avail!! The dog just looked up with very sad eyes, and not one ounce of energy to move and "protect" the property. It was too awful to see!!!!
We went back about 40 mins later and managed to raise someone who is just a lodger there!! When asked what was wrong with the dog he just shrugged his shoulders and said "It hasn't had food for 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!" Dear God what on earth are people thinking!!! According to the lodger the owners have been away, and the cook went off and hasn't come back. The lodger has to jump over the wall to get in and out of the property - but didn't once think to alert a soul on the plight of the dog!!
We took it a meal which was woolfed down in seconds - poor creature - and have alerted the SPCA who will follow up in the morning....
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, take notice of whats happening in your neighbourhood and work area, be the eyes and ears of the SPCA and make that phone call when necessary, giving as much detail as you can. You will remain anonymous. The people who care can go to the plight of the animal and do something about the pathetic situations animals are finding themselves in, through no fault of their own. I have found this most distressing as I am sure would most of the caring people of Bulawayo !!!!
Also if pet owners are planning to be away for any length of time, always ask a friend to check on your home and your pets - if the domestic or gardener/lodger is called away, falls ill etc then your pets could land up with a similar fate!!

Water rationing has put a Blight on our house, & all Because of a Big, Blue Bucket full of Bath water, which Bungled & Banged the lid of my "Betta" cistern to the floor where it Bounced & Broke, Bestrewing itself all over the floor - I was a very Befuddled Bystander. And now I am Bothered, Bewildered & going Beserk trying to find another one with which to Beautify my Bathroom. If by chance you should have a cistern without a Bowl, or a lid without a cistern we would love to Beg, Borrow or Buy it from you - we promise to give it a very good home.
